Celtic Let Glasgow Flourish

266

If you are 30-years-old or above, chances are you have been going to Celtic Park since a time when the stadium itself and the area around Parkhead was derelict and economically challenged.  The Parkhead Forge and Barr’s factories, large local employers in their day, were long gone.

In the early 1970s, the government attempted to regenerate inner-city areas across the country, with the Glasgow Eastern Area Renewal (GEAR) project first to launch, followed by Docklands projects in London and Liverpool.  GEAR ran for almost 20 years, but when it shuttered in 1987, the east if the city was still hopelessly impoverished.  That’s not to say it would not have been worse still, were it not for the limited impact of GEAR.

What the area lacked was an anchor project but one arrived seven years after GEAR when the foundations were laid for the new Celtic Park.

The regeneration of Celtic brought improved management to all aspects of the club and associated business, while visitor numbers increased.  A seven-day-per-week retail operation was the first step in bringing people to the area out with match days, as Celtic continued to acquire adjacent land and make improvements to the stadium environment.

This anchor sporting facility soon drew the Commonwealth Arena and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, build directly opposite Celtic Park.  Glasgow had a sporting quarter, drawing athletes and well as spectators from across the globe.

Progress has not stopped.  Celtic have outline permission for a hotel to be built onsite, with a museum to follow and continually petition for a fan zone, where the tens of thousands who arrive on match day will be able to buy refreshments and access toilet facilities.

Strathclyde University’s Fraser of Allander Institute’s report on the economic impact of Celtic, published yesterday, outlines the enormous importance of the club to the economic success of the city and beyond:

Equivalent of 2820 full time jobs created.

£165m contribution to Scottish GDP.

A net inflow to Glasgow of over 1 million people in one season.

Celtic are a successful Scottish exporter, 47% of revenues come from outside Scotland.

What is happening through Celtic in the east of the city is not the only story in Glasgow.  The SEC Centre, with the Exhibition Centre, Clyde Auditorium and SSE Hydro has turned the Finnieston area into a world-leading venue for conferences, exhibitions and concerts.  Glasgow is now a destination city.

Much of this happened organically.  The success of the SECC encouraged more development in the area, while Celtic have had several iterations of insightful planning since the mid-90s.  In different parts of the world, cities compete to bring economic icons like Celtic to their patch.  In Glasgow, the Council heard objections to the Celtic Superstore plans as it may compete with the local Tesco.  Public transportation infrastructure caters only for local resident volumes, with no plans to move into the 21st century, while Glasgow City Council are planning to drive visitors away by insisting the nearest they can park will be 1 mile from the stadium – displacing the parking problem and increasing the time cars will be left in the area as spectators walk to and from the stadium.

The report was issued ahead of Celtic’s AGM, which is currently underway.  It is an explainer for those in positions of power who carry an economic responsibility, but seem to have little grasp of how to Let Glasgow Flourish.  The subtext to why the club asked the Fraser of Allander Institute to undertake the report is one of frustration.  Things are going well for Celtic, for Parkhead and for Glasgow, but so much more could be done if others worked with the club.

  1. Most of you can guess my views on the board’s Res12 ‘active inaction’

If I might offer you a wee smile, I think my Dad’s becoming still more of a mischevious Reb….

On Sunday, he mentioned to some Ayrshire passers-by that WJF had scored two beauties.

‘There were four good goals’ came the reply, through the background noise of knuckles on pavement….

    His comment tonight…..

‘What they gonna say when I see them next and I ask them about who scored ALL of last night’s great goals???’ ???‍♂️?????

  2. James

    Magic hahahaha.

    Ayrshire connection too.

James Forrest is the best thing to come out of Ayrshire since Bobby Lennox, The Trashcan Sinatras and The Waterbhoys.

Just watched eight minutes highlights of Scotland’s last two games. Despite the paucity of the opposition’s challenge, there were some excellent passages of play by Scotland and Jamesie’s goals were very well taken, to cap an excellent personal performance by him.

In looking at the midfield’s performance, I think that we did some seriously good business by offloading Stuart Armstrong for such a high fee, with only one year left on his contract. Of the three midfielders, Armstrong, Christie and McGregor, Armstrong was the least effective of the trio. He looks dynamic, but is really largely ineffective. His passing is careless and untidy, often putting team mates under unnecessary pressure or losing possession. His shooting is similarly haphazard. He is easily overpowered in the tackle. These failings were there in his time with us. At 26, I think he has got as good as he is going to get. In both games Christie was by far the more effective of the two. His passing is better, he has better vision and is more of a goal threat. He is also more competitive, and brings an aggression to our game that had been lacking until he broke in to the team. Christie is younger and has time to improve. He is a Tim at heart, and that is always welcome imo. Armstrong? I was never quite sure that he really wanted to play for us from the start.

Swapping Armstrong for Christie, has improved the team. Christie cost £500k? Armstrong sold for £7m? If the money is reinvested into the team (a big if, I know), well that is the way to improve.

I disregarded CalMac in this discussion, as his current worth to our team is blindingly obvious.

  4. Great to see Scotland performaning so well, especially the contribution by the Celts.

Interestingly, the Celts that saved A McLeish’s Scotland career were different to the ones that almost saved WGS…

Great to see Jamesie getting some well overdue recognition. Having to score 5 goals in two games to get the tartan army to murmur a song for you!!

Sad state of affairs on Res12. Feel for the ghuys who put some sterling work into this. For me Celtic PLC have joined the ranks of the move along Timmy nothing to see here brigade.

    EUROCHAMPS67 @ 10:46 PM,

    That’s an interesting insight…

As you seem to know a bit about the process maybe you can help me out on something I noticed.

Is this a case of The Intellectual Property Office writing to the trade mark owners advising that the trade mark was expiring and asking if the owners wanted to extend the ownership? Then one owner extending? I.e. Celtic.

I ask this as The Rangers Football Club PLC no longer exists as such…

It was renamed RFC 2012 Limited and is in the process of liquidation.

If any such correspondence went to Ibrox one of three things could have happened…

    – The correspondence was ignored by the New club, the liquidators or both

    – The correspondence was forwarded to the liquidator

    – The correspondence was dealt with by RIFC PLC &/or TRFC Limited

Surely if the third had happened then TRFC Limited could have made a claim for ownership as it, when it was Sevco Scotland, it bought Rangers’ Intellectual Property and could have a claim and updated the information accordingly.

Also if the second had happened, the liquidators could have claimed ownership on behalf of RFC 2012 and updated the name and address.

The fact that neither of these things occurred points to the first scenario being the case and it was simply a case of Celtic updating their ownership.

    Hail Hail

  5. I reckon if you asked 100k Celtic fans in a poll if they would swap our board for any other in world football, 90k would say no.

They’re not perfect but there must be a 100 reasons for different things happening at board and CEO level that we don’t see.

Bankier’s not great but maybe someone has got to say some things for the record and be unpopular so it might as well be him.

Just seen Beram Kayals goal- good goal but McGregor@s miles out-big Craig would’ve caught it.

And his world class save…it was nearly straight at him.

I hope Auldheid is not too disheartened by today’s events.

I may not have shared his belief in the PLC’s willingness to do the right thing,( although I have wished that I could share his faith,), but I have always admired his belief and resolve.

I think many of us feel let down, if not betrayed,by the Club right now. I suspect none more so than the 4.

He and the other resolutioners deserve a whole lot better than what they gotten from ‘our’ club.

Frankly, I think the way the Club has treated all of its fans, but particularly the 4, is nothing short of a permanent embarrassment and occasional disgrace.

    ===========================

    Thanks for your kind thoughts.

Actually I didn’t feel despondent as I more or less anticipated what line they would take based on lack of effective action since the charges of non compliance were first made in May, deepening by end of May when hard evidence emerged of what took place at end of March 2011 which was the last piece in the jigsaw.

What I hoped would happen was the matter would finally be taken to UEFA but suspected the policy would be to continue to stick with the SFA JPDT route that stalled in July. I could accept that if I knew what was being taken to CAS, why and when and a deadline to complete was set.

So after requesting an update for the audience that confirmed no change of direction I responded as follows, interrupting Peter Lawwell when he stated requisitioners were happy with what was said about Celtic making it clear to SFA that the issue would not go away,d were responsible to shareholders and so needed answers , by going off script and saying “Sorry Peter, Im not happy” (to a cheer) followed by

” Lets see if I have this right.

Fourteen months after instigating an investigation the SFA are assuring Celtic shareholders via the club that something, but we don’t know what, will be referred to CAS but we don’t know why nor do we know when.

(A nod to Brendan for The League Cup final: The grass at Hampden will be longer than the grass at Tynecastle)

The assurances that something unclear will happen comes four months after that CAS referral decision was made and there still has been no referral.

It has been five months since June when the shareholders lawyer (at a cost of £2.5k on top of earlier bills amounting to £7.5k) put a series of questions along with supporting evidence to the SFA copied to Celtic to which no answers have as yet been given.

So the questions I have for The Celtic Board are:

    1. Are Celtic actually bound by the SFA JPDT Decision to refer something to CAS and if so on what basis given that Andrea Traverso Head of UEFA Club Licensing in his letter of 8th June to Celtic shareholders said and I quote.

“It is not the general policy of UEFA to write directly to lawyers representing unidentified clients and if this is a matter a member club of the Scottish Football Association ( IE CELTIC ) wishes to take up with UEFA then the club should do so directly.”

Further: can it be explained to shareholders here in the room and at large why Celtic are not asking UEFA CFCB to investigate given:

    1. Fundamentally it is a breach of UEFA rules that is under investigation, which is a job for UEFA – and what Res12 requested.

    And

    2. UEFA’s recent statement of 12 November (and again I quote)

“Should new information suggest that previously concluded cases have been abused, those cases may be capable of being re-opened as determined on a case-by-case basis.”

    In summary:

    • Why have Celtic from the beginning chosen to eschew direct UEFA involvement?

    • Why are they not now taking the new information into account in respect of that choice and reviewing it?

    • Given the time it has taken the SFA to decide that CAS should be involved (for unclear reasons) are Celtic willing to wait an undetermined period until the SFA are able to progress the matter or will it be all over by ST Renewal time next April?

    • Would it be possible for shareholders representatives to meet the SFA Compliance Officer and CEO before Christmas to ascertain progress, to be able to provide assurances based on clarity to those they represent?

    • Can we have answers to those questions confirmed in writing please to send to signatories of Resolution 12?”

I’ll be e mailing this to Celtic tomorrow in respect of the last point to obtain answers to the preceding questions.

Its been shared with the other three amigos but unless something is done before Xmas to convince us that the SFA mean business and will provide clarity and a deadline (ST renewal being an obvious leverage point) then there is little option but to take the matter to the police having first secured some legal advice.

It would not be Celtic who are accused of fraud but depending on what is uncovered there could be an aiding and abetting fallout.

I think disappointed/sad rather than despondent is more appropriate that professional football not just Celtic has sold its soul to the devil.

  7. AULDHEID @ 12:15 AM,

Thanks for the update, well done in calling out the Board at the AGM.

Their lack of engagement with you ghuys then intimating things were just moving along and you were content was disingenuous to say the least.

Glad you were there and called it as you saw it. We used to have a phrase for that…

    “Stand up and be counted”

Eleven games to play in 2018 with a thin squad. Two wins from six away. Blanked three times, beaten twice. Bring back Scott Brown because the vaunted current Scotland midfield require assistance.

    =====================================================================================

    Oh. Thank God.

    Sanity enters the proceedings.

  12. The rebellious Celtic of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s, died, when the club fell into the hands of a Canadian tory, who then put the club into the hands of a shady Irish tory, after the Canadian tory had made a promise to the ordinary supporter’s who had subscribed to yet another share issue, that the club would be left in the hands of those supporters. This deceit is very rarely recounted by the various, rewriters of history, when they reference, Fergus McCann.

Ye see, until that deceit by Fergus McCann, is rectified, then, neither Celtic FC, or its support, will ever be free from, Old Firmitis.

To set Celtic free, would not cost supporters money to by out Desmond.

What it would take, would be for the supporters to call Desmond’s bluff.

That would entail, a collective will, to withhold season ticket money, and making it clear that, the season ticket money, wouldn’t go into the club, until, Desmond et al, were gone.

To be clear, how much would Desmond’s shares be worth, if the park was empty ?

    And, that is the point.

“Ireland unfree, will never be at peace.”

Celtic unfree, will never be at peace.

Not sure I get your line of atttack here but I am prepared to reply even if, like you, I do not meet the stringent requirements for comment that you intended to set (BTW- doubt if anyone is in awe waiting for this or has bated their breath). :-

I did not see much criticism for the way Celtic is run commercially yesterday- did you?

What I did see was a lot of criticism about the ethics of the operation over the obscurantist way it dealt with a shareholder led request for clarity on Res 12.

The people who led the complaints against Volkswagen over their falsification of diesel emission data, did not have experience of running companies as large as Volkswagen. Should their complaint have been dis-barred?

Those companies that mis-sold PPI with their products were usually large companies. The people that sought re-dress had had to have recourse to credit facilities, resulting in PPI being offered, so they were unlikely to be captains of industry either. Did they not understand the pressures that lead to unethical behaviour in Boardrooms?

You are a poster that will use the exhortation to “play the ball and not the man” but you have just been guilty of Colonel Jessup type rhetoric in stating “we are not fit to criticise or handle our truth”. You made no comment on the merits of the arguments being put forward in criticism of the Board, you just belittled the right, or expertise, to be exact, of the critics to make their argument.

There is a poster on CQN, Traditionalist88, who regularly states that “We are not allowed to criticise professionals” and claims that there are many posters who are advancing that “straw man” argument. I have often challenged him by asking who is actually saying that as I do not see that argument being made?

Your post, about needing credentials and qualifications to be able to criticise, has made my question less telling. There is now one CQN man who has advanced such a view- yourself.

Now, how about starting again and stating your own views about the merits or weaknesses in the criticism leveled against the board.

Don’t worry, I will set a very low barrier for your right to express such views- you just have to attempt to make sense.
