Celtic long term land dividends

1140

As we reported yesterday, Celtic have been busy buying up land around the periphery of the stadium for many years. The club managed to get the deal to buy land behind the Jock Stein Stand done before the mineral seam running below it was discovered. I hear the excavation rights are estimated to be worth £50m to Celtic, who bought the land for £3m in January 2009 with money which had been earmarked to buy Stephen Fletcher. Hibernian thought the Fletcher deal was done but Celtic pulled out at the last minute when the land deal became available due to an emergency cash requirement at the Council, who needed to build schools to educate children arriving in the city from Eastern Europe.

Back then, when I asked why we weren’t signing Fletcher a senior source at the club told me, “We can only spend that £3m once and we need the land for burger vans and stuff.” Before kick-off, fans currently go off-premises to spend their money, cash that could be going to Celtic. Source added, “We’ll be able to buy a Fletcher every year with the catering income we’ll make from this land deal.”

Made sense at the time, makes more sense now.

That £50m is due to arrive in time to get the Co-op off our case and leave a substantial amount available to deal with what could be the first season we ever face Sevco- keeping them in their place.

Good luck to the Celtic fans based in North America ahead of the Féile on the weekend of 17-19 January. Events are based at The Plough & Stars, Philidelphia, include live music, a tour of the An Gorta Mor Memorial, a live Beyond the Waves broadcast and a Q&A with Celtic Youth Coach, Willie McNabb.

‘Voting yes is a big two fingered sionara to labour voters in England and Wales. They’re condemned to perpetual Tory rule if we vote yes’

    ###

I think I’m right in saying that there has only been one Labour government that required Scotland to swing the result.

Having said that I think Scotland leaving the Union would make a Labour government at Westminster less likely and a Tory one more likely.

So what, say the nats. It’s nothing to do with us. Won’t affect us.

Except of course that it would.

The SNP, who have made it clear that they would intend to stick around in a separate Scotland have made it clear that their vision is to make Scotland attractive for business investment. That’s why they’ve pledged to cut corporation tax.

The country they’ll be competing with for investment will be England. An England that more likely than not will have a Tory government. So how would a government in Scotland out compete a neighbouring country for inward investment? A neighboring country with a Tory government and a market place ten times the size of Scotland? Higher wages? Higher minimum wage? Greater employment rights for workers?

Or would it be a race to the bottom?

    Think about it.

  7. I am astounded of forehead at the pro nationalists on here. Haven’t you been paying attention? Haven’t you noticed the campaign to criminalise Catholicism in Scotland and that’s before independence. Scotland is a cesspit and ready to attack its minority. Please keep up. I realised a long time ago that you won’t change people’s minds on independence so please don’t insult everyone’s intelligence. Vote yes if you are daft enough but stop trying to convert the rest of us.

Paul’s leader today reveals much about priorities at CP. It’s certainly not about the footy. We lost. The league as a result of that decision regarding fletcher and lost out on champions league money. They let the support down (as ever). It’s being portrayed now as a triumph. Really? We spent 3 m on land and lost say 20 m in the CL. If and it’s a big if the land is now worth a whole lot more because of mineral deposits then any financial windfall is luck. Not foresight. But I am glad Paul has revealed the thought process at CP. No surprise it’s simply make money and to hell with the football.

Can someone answer me the question why celtic are in turkey and have moved the game on Saturday to a Wednesday? Once again complete disregard for the support.

  14. I will have no right to vote in the Independence ballot, but due to an absolute distrust of any party politician….I would have acted the same way as I have done on every polling day since I was old enough to vote…..walked right past the polling station and into the pub.

Because of my belligerence towards party politics and leeching politicians, some people actually think I have no right to have any political opinions..This I find most hilarious of all.

I find it quirkily amusing that the Scottish electorate in all probability will vote against independence , yet the English if asked to vote for an independent Scotland would vote for it.

An even more curious but recent phenomenon,is that circa 65% of Northern Irish Catholics do not want to be part of a United Ireland. No less than Phil MacG alluded to this in his blog last year.

The UK in the 21st century probably offers more than a separate Scotland or Ireland ever could to their Citizens of Catholic descent.Only my opinion though. Its all about people and not horrible politicians who have no talent or skills to do anything else with their lives.
