Celtic long term land dividends

1140

As we reported yesterday, Celtic have been busy buying up land around the periphery of the stadium for many years. The club managed to get the deal to buy land behind the Jock Stein Stand done before the mineral seam running below it was discovered. I hear the excavation rights are estimated to be worth £50m to Celtic, who bought the land for £3m in January 2009 with money which had been earmarked to buy Stephen Fletcher. Hibernian thought the Fletcher deal was done but Celtic pulled out at the last minute when the land deal became available due to an emergency cash requirement at the Council, who needed to build schools to educate children arriving in the city from Eastern Europe.

Back then, when I asked why we weren’t signing Fletcher a senior source at the club told me, “We can only spend that £3m once and we need the land for burger vans and stuff.” Before kick-off, fans currently go off-premises to spend their money, cash that could be going to Celtic. Source added, “We’ll be able to buy a Fletcher every year with the catering income we’ll make from this land deal.”

Made sense at the time, makes more sense now.

That £50m is due to arrive in time to get the Co-op off our case and leave a substantial amount available to deal with what could be the first season we ever face Sevco- keeping them in their place.

Good luck to the Celtic fans based in North America ahead of the Féile on the weekend of 17-19 January. Events are based at The Plough & Stars, Philidelphia, include live music, a tour of the An Gorta Mor Memorial, a live Beyond the Waves broadcast and a Q&A with Celtic Youth Coach, Willie McNabb.

Visit ploughbhoyscsc.com for more details, including how to secure accommodation.

I genuinely don’t mean any offence but are you able to provide me with FACTS to support your reasons for voting YES because at the moment you just sound like another pathetic ranter who’s more interested in arguement than debate.

  2. HamiltonTim,

No offence intended, or taken, but both your posts have expressed concern about the next election after the referendum, that’s all I meant by short term.

No one is talking about abolishing Catholic schools, it’s not right, it would be embarrassing internationally and, most importantly for politicians, it’s not popular electorally – it could never attract anything like the votes it would cost. Do you really believe Salmond could do more damage over the next 100 years than 100 years of Tory (or Labour trying to be Tory) goverments of the UK?

When the oil runs out there is a very good chance that England will grant us our independence. Once they’ve extracted the maximum benefit we’ll be set free with no oil money to smooth the transition and fund the restructure that will be required.

This is a one-time offer. If we let this opportunity pass us through fear of the unknown or imaginings of worst-case scenarios then our grandkids will never forgive us.

Anticipating deep-fried salads freely available at all transient outlets around Merchant City East on match-nights and holy feast-days is the top rung of the club’s Ladder of Achievement we’ve built today.

Good times ahead for Celtic plc.

    Re. independence referendum.

I’m a Yes voter and my hope is to vote Birgitte Nyborg and the New Democrats to success in the first post referendum Scottish General Election, sometime in 2016.

Thereafter, it will be a pleasure to witness the signing ceremony where Scotland proudly takes its stand as the 51st and best wee state of the United States of America and Caledonia, before 2022 so that Calvin Miller can play at Qatar.

I have never voted SNP. A yes vote is not a vote for SNP. The Unionists who post here seem to use scaremonger tactics, tiresome. I am concerned for all our grandchildren, if we continue with the Union. Think we have the brains and talent in Scotland to go it alone. I was born here in Scotland, but don’t have any Scottish blood in my body. I feel self determination should be our grandchildren’s right.

  7. Jungle Jim I travel from Stornoway every home game.Ross County and ICT are obviously nearer for the away games but it is quicker, easier and more expensive to get to Celtic Park. Hail Hail Hebcelt

I agree. There is no chance of any party with aspirations to government in Scotland proposing to abolish Cathic schools.

It would leave them open to international condemnation and a subsequent loss in international investment.

With regards to the mineral seam etc has anyone else noticed that when our subs run to warm up[lots of trackie bottom shaking] at the corner there seems to be more soil around that area than when they started?

I was working and living in London when John Smith died. Possibly the only time the death of a politician shocked me, other than Robin Cook. I joined in the subsequent euphoria surrounding New Labour. Look how that turned out.

We are now ruled by the Burlington Boys who are ensuring the iron-like grasp of the mega-rich is maintained, even tightened.

My time(s) in London showed me the imbalance of wealth in the UK and as I have worked in Oil & Gas for a few decades, I have had insight into the abuses of revenues and disparity of employment (almost all engineering done in London, although the vast majority have never seen an oil platform is one of many examples).

Among the many things we have to look forward to is more right-of-centre political decisions including possible exit from the EU, a decision that will be made by English voters.

I could go on, but won’t (some sensitive souls don’t like yon politics on here:-) but for as long as I can remember, I have wanted self determination for Scotland, warts and all.

It’s an AYE from me !!

  13. I just love Turnbull Hutton; here he is today talking about tickets for the Ramsdens cup final:

“The police would like all our supporters in one stand – the Famous Five Stand – which has 3500 seats.

“There was an option where we would get a bit of another stand, but that would entail Rangers fans above our fans, which might not be the happiest place to be.

“We suggested the opposite, but it’s in the hands of the SPFL and we await with interest how many we get.

“If we had bigger venue that would solve the problem but the only other option was Celtic Park and there are nine million reasons why the police and Celtic don’t want it there. So we are the victims.

“I’ve been castigated because some people are saying we should’ve agreed to go to Ibrox and made money out of it.

“But it’s a cup final and in my opinion it has to be a neutral ground.”

That is the issue. Neither side can provide facts as to what will happen after the referendum.

The only thing that can be stated with any certainty is that should the Yes vote win, then the Scottish population will subsequently be governed only by the party/or parties that have won the election in Scotland.

In the last General Election the Labour vote was greater than the combined Tory/Lib Dem in terms of both seats and %. And way beyond the SNP, which is understandable given their domination of Holyrood. It’s those figures though that lead me to believe and independent Scotland is more likely to be, and remain a Labour country rather than an SNP one.

whether scotland is governed by tory toffs or not – it seems to be owned by them regardless – acording to last nights tv

cant wait for independence, getting rid of the monarchy, nationalisation of the utitlities, redistribution of land (and clawing back the mineral seam)

in fact i’d vote for a new monarchy with thatcher loving King Salmon on the throne

A well measured and appropriate response that I would imagine would speak for the silent majority.

A large percentage of the voting population have legitimate concerns and questions that wont be allayed by constant bombardment of cybernat just vote yes posts.

e.g. Apart from the fiscal / monetary concerns that have still to be answered, I am still perturbed by the fact that the snp have never had any leaders or ministers representing 16% of the people. Coincidence ??

This is especially pertinent since they have stated they have no plans to disband after the referendum.

  19. Isn’t the bit about Sevco not wanting to sell any tickets before February odd?

Surely they would want to sell at the earliest opportunity to raise cash?

I have no idea how I will vote at the referendum but I suspect most senior citizens will vote for the status Quo as we do not like change.Concerns for me are if we vote yes is 4,000 jobs lost at Faslane, who will pay our pensions ? how will we protect the Country ? We will still have the monarchy and have to pay our share of there upkeep ? There are many other questions and at the moment more questions than answers. H.H.

I have given facts and figures many times on this site, and yet not once have I seen any genuine arguments

    for the No Campaign.

And of course emotion will play a parts in posts submitted as this is a very emotional Subject .

Will any Unionist please explain to me why there is a House of Lords filled with Labour peers, when it was clearly in Labour’s manifesto since the sixties , probably earlier, to get shot of it. The had like, an earlier Tory government, 13 years of misrule.

    Facts: Free prescription: Free school

Meals: Free travel for over 60 ‘s on buses and discounted on trains. Free further education in Colleges and Uni’s. This is really important as it would cost something like £36K to get a Scottish degree. Labour has stated that these most of these hard earned benefits will be taken away. There is loads more but I am going for my tea.
