Celtic lose crucial tactical element

656

We hoped that Celtic’s anaemic 57 minutes against St Mirren last week would serve as an indication that performance levels needed to improve ahead of yesterday’s game against Newco, but many of the same facets were in evidence.

Anytime I have seen Newco this season they seem to start brightly. By contrast, Celtic tend to feel their way into games in a low-energy manner.  This was evident yesterday.  The game was moments old when Erik Sviatchenko was pressurised into a mistake, which brought Newco deep into Celtic territory.  It was 3 minutes before we crossed the halfway line again.

Erik’s next two touches were also unassured, which interrupted the flow of the ball.  It looked like Newco had decided he was the Celtic player to press.  His central defensive partner was caught flat when a touch by Miller saw the ball pass through him, allowing Waghorn the first of his great opportunities to score.

Passing was clearly ineffective.  Celtic simply didn’t keep possession throughout the game.  The pitch seemed fast, how many times did you see a through ball run out of play?  I wondered if Brendan decided to pull back groundsmen on watering duties?

Scott Brown opened in an advanced central midfield position, often ahead of Stewart Armstrong, with Nir Bitton the only one of the midfield three consistently playing his regular role.  While the objective was clearly to pressurise the Newco defence, it came at a cost of ball retention.

Callum McGregor brought composure to Celtic’s play when he replaced Bitton at halftime.  He was prepared to hold the ball, draw opponents in, and pass or move.  This served to underline how poorly we were in this respect during the first half.

Stewart Armstrong created and scored a goal out of nothing.  When he went off we not only missed his edge around the Newco penalty area, we became porous in midfield.  Ball retention then took a further downturn and we lacked tightness.

Newco deserved their goal and, at that point, I thought deserved their point.  They neutered the left flank threat of Sinclair and Tierney, which isolated Dembele.  With Celtic unable to circulate the ball to any effect, which was the crucial tactical element of the game.

Miller

The psychology of refereeing is a weighty subject.  Bobby Madden booked four Newco players before cautioning Scott Brown, but the real test isn’t applying a player’s first yellow card.  After his booking, Waghorn twice tumbled theatrically inside the box in a blatant attempt to win a penalty.  Both should have resulted in a second caution, but having booked so many Newco players, Madden froze.

Pointing to the penalty spot in added time of a tied game is a big decision for a referee.  For whatever reason, Madden didn’t want to do this when Hill took Leigh Griffiths down with a waist-high challenge.

I could debate the reasons why he didn’t want to do this with you all week, but we both know why.  At least the manager and players know what to expect in the semi-final.

  2. “Over the last two years Mr King has had ample opportunity to disclose documents and to provide other evidence to rebut any deeming, presumption or inference from the evidence that he was acting in concert with Messrs Letham, Taylor and Park. He has not done so.”

Mr King had appealed against the initial findings of the takeover panel last year, arguing he was separate from New Oasis Asset Limited, a British Virgin Islands company which acquired his 14.5% shareholding in Rangers from institutional investors in 2015.

The appeal board found New Oasis was ultimately owned by Mr King for “the benefit of himself and members of his family” through a Guernsey-based trust.

The appeal board noted: “We have reached the conclusion, having regard to the grounds and basis of the appeal and taking account of all the evidential materials placed before the board, that Mr King was acting in concert with Messrs Letham, Taylor and Park in the acquisition of the shares in Rangers on December 31, 2014, and January, 2, 2015. On the ‘acting in concert’ point we uphold the findings and ruling of the committee.”

The takeover appeal board also criticised the businessman for a “lack of cooperation” in its investigation.

I guess it was always going to be difficult for King to claim he wasn’t in a concert party with the three bears, given the recent statement about the £18m investment (it would appear to lump his and their investment amounts together).

Midden cheated yesterday, and so blatantly, that I laughed every time I thought of the penalty on Leigh at the end. It’s so obvious that I laugh in order to prevent me going postal. There’s no discussion required or dubiety about it;Midden cheated and affected the game.

Now,I know some will say that’s what we get for passively accepting the situation by attending games against them or not burning down the Den of Hamp in a rage against the amoral machine, and there’s probably a bit of truth in that, but,I believe cheating and corruption is inate to hunnery and it’s enablers.Cleansing them and the game of it is almost impossible as it would require a complete overhaul of those in positions of power in corridors outside of footballing offices. The tentacles of complicity that facilitates the cheating stretch far outwith the game itself.(We are the) People would need to put themselves to the sword, remove or expunge themselves…turkeys voting for christmas etc etc.It ain’t gonna happen.

The cheating and corruption will always be there and we will always need to fight it.Sad but true.

Back to yesterday’s game. With Midden having such an effect on proceedings I find it difficult to blame the players (although I concede a few were way below par).Even taking our dip in performance into account the correct application of the rules by Midden would have saw us run out winners.I doubt they would have mustered a draw playing with 8 or 9 players.I’m not denying or excusing our players for playing badly but it should have been a sub-standard performance that resulted in a win and Midden was the main reason it wasn’t.

At the end of the day the result is actually inconsequential to us as it will have no material affect on the title and we remain undefeated.I thought the Sevco celebrations at the end were what i’d expect from an infant club who’d just achieved the best result in their brief history, not yet 5 and drawing with the mighty Celtic in Paradise.Any wee (ugly) baby club would have reacted the same, shirley?!

Anywho, onwards to Dundee and get back to winning ways.I believe our team deserve our backing for the brilliant season they’ve given us so far,one that seemed unimaginable only a year ago.And we’ll improve again next season.

Re the Sevco share price; as far as I recall a great many of these shares were purchased at 1p so some people may want to make a killing on this.

It also gives Club 1872 the opportunity to sell shares to their hero Dave and lend him back the profits as another soft loan. That will keep the lights on for another month!

So it will always be there and we will always need to fight it? Res12 put the fight in the hands of PLC with regards the Huns. They bottled it and kicked it down the road.

They bottled it after the cheating in Dundee Utd game a few years ago. Cheating proved and factually evident as Teven Craven was then sin died for his part in being honest after the fact. Remember that dossier so well announced on here by Paul67. I wonder what lock and key that is buried behind.

Someone mentioned back channels earlier re. Celtic complaining. Aye those are working too.

Financially our PLC are very Davy when it comes to profit and loss. Without DD’s neck being reeled out by Hun celebrations and a likely low level of uptake in season books last summer Brendan wouldn’t be here and we’d be Ronnied up with another low level manager.

There is no will to fight it. Never has been and never will be unless something stirs up that figh ie. DD feeling personally slighted or the fans ready to do a bit of financial protesting by not buying up the up front money in the pocket season books.

  23. Yesterday I contributed while feeling disappointed. Today I am not so much disappointed as disgusted. I feel the whole of Scottish football is being dragged backwards by the MIBs and the rest of the football establishment to accommodate Sevco’s follow followers. Yesterday’s apology for an official (and what about the other 3) should NEVER be allowed to referee any game anywhere again.

The Board need to heed the support’s anger and frustration. They should also be concerned for the welfare of their staff. How many of our players have been seriously injured so far this season, never mind the appalling behaviour of the likes of Miller yesterday. It is not the first time teams have kicked us off the park with complete impunity. No protection whatever from the MIBs. (By the way, any word on Bitton and Armstrong?)

Dave King breached financial rules by “acting in concert” when he seized control at Rangers.

The South Africa-based businessman became chairman at Ibrox after a boardroom battle with Mike Ashley’s representatives ended in March 2015.

The City of London’s takeover appeal board ruled on Monday that Mr King had breached the City Code on takeovers and mergers by “acting in concert” with the ‘Three Bears’ in acquiring a stake equalling more than 30% of the total shareholding in Rangers International Football Club PLC.

    Good post, sir.

Employers have a duty of care under the Health and Safety etc Act so Celtic are legally required to take all reasonable steps to ensure the health and welfare of their employees. If I was correct in a previous post about a referee in rugby being cited for breach of HASAW regulations by not ensuring that the laws of the game were properly enforced and a player was seriously injured thereby, then perhaps an approach to HSE with video evidence may be a runner.
