Celtic midfield problems

645

Neil Lennon accepted responsibility for the tactical decision to start yesterday’s game with three at the back, saying, “We thought the three would suit us, but that didn’t seem to be the case. We looked a little bit flat the first 10-15 minutes and I don’t know why.”

Hibernian scored during this period, which may or may not have been a result of the defensive line-up, but if anything, Celtic were even flatter after they went to four at the back.  The game was a throwback to the days when Gordon Strachan’s teams worked hard but seldom inspired.

The midfield didn’t dominate enough of the ball to prevent Hibs creating several good chances and was unable to craft a clear-enough opening.  With Charlie Mulgrew on the field we are always dangerous, and Kris Commons has a better sense of where the goal is than anyone at the club, but without them we grasp to Paddy McCourt, who only seems to get the call when we’re in trouble.

So where do we need to strengthen next month……………?

All the talk of a playmaker does not address main issue with this team. Off the ball movement is really poor and has been for years. Until this is addressed there’s no point in looking for another midfielder. I think young McGeough has deserved more game time. What has happened to Philip Twardzik?

    ……………………………………………………………………….

These ghuys wont make it here.

I’ve stated on this blog before…..Watt, Mcgeogh, twardzic et al have no future at Celtic Park. Like the great prospects that went before them.

Why do we persist with the Youth Academy or whatever it’s called?

Apart from Aiden it’s produced approximately hee haw.

    Wind it up!

Save 5 or 6 million pounds a year or whatever it costs to run it and buy a quality footballer every year!

    Makes sense tae me.

I agree with large parts of your post

The CFC product at the moment for SPL games is over priced in all aspects

  3. Philbhoy.

Does it actually cost 5 to 6 million a year to run our youth academy ?

Are the costs of running Lennoxtown not included in the that figure ?

If so , they would remain a cost for the first team , even if we stopped trying to produce youth players.

You’re comparing apples and bananas there.

Samaras is never going to give the supply that Commons or Mulgrew will.

He gets on the end of their passes, he doesn’t make them.

I do get your point he should be taking on the mantle of creator, but what he brings is different to the other two.

    Certainly woke me up btw!

Hope Santa was good to you.

Everything on the planet is overpriced at the moment.

    Profits shall go first.

Popped down the Co this evening – picked up an Iceberg lettuce, up until tonight they’ve been £1 – now £1.29 – shy of a third more expensive.

    And that just ain’t a winter price…

Things are going to get worse before they get better.

Brainy guys are predicting a 5% drop in house values in the next year – yet our full economic raison de etre is homes being built for max profit and then said houses inheriting unrealistic sell on values.

The money released to banks to aid lending is being used to lend for mortgages – in the hope the construction business will increase. Price things realistically. Stop endowing the housing market with an importance it does not deserve. Stop using London as an indicative business model for housing and construction throughout the country.

They need to start thinking outside the brick built box…

  10. Strangely enough spoke with good Celtic friend and we both agreed we needed a brave striker ..diving header type .. Or was it a diver ? .. We could do with a locksmith midfielder ..

On another note I was really impressed with paul caurney of hibs . Quick feet .. Strong for a wee guy and went head to head with broonie ..reminde of me of ” Roy rocket boots james Forrest .” But stronger hh

  11. I don`t like Celtic losing but I can accept it. What is more difficult to accept is the BBC Highlight`s commentator saying Hibs had “far and away more chances ” when the same site`s stats show Hibs 6 shots, 2 on target; Celtic 14 and 7 on target.

Doc, good, woke you up, Thats exactly the point, he should be taking responsibility for Creating in the team, with his ability, but he doesn’t often enough – in my opinion.

The discussion about a creative midfielder – we have enough potential in our current squad if consistency was there ?

Have you got things arrangd for daughter on 2nd ?

  13. Ulysses McGhee .. Banks are lending to businesses by repackaging existing loans or overdrafts at higher rates with accompanying very high ” arrangement fees” .. It is shocking then saying they are lending to small businesses . Very little new lending is occurring, hh

Maloney and Mcmanus if they had been any good for US would still be here.

Kennedy could have been the jewel in the crown but forrest does not do it consistently and is injury prone, be it a hammering from the opposition or dodgy hamstrings.

And if my memory serves me well kennedy was produced by the academy about 8 years ago!!

So on the basis of the players you have mentioned, divided by the no of years and the cost.

Err, way too expensive for me.

Sign a quality footballer every year!

I always wondered why Barcelona paid Inter £40Million & Eto for big Zlatan Ibrahimovic, I could definitely see them going for the big guy because he is, well, a big guy. That never worked for either Barcelona or Zlatan. I think he was in awe of that Club too much to perform the way he can. I am as ignorant as anyone when it comes to how good players are. Mr Larsson may well be having more of an impact in my mind than previously thought. Make sure the player is at home and is tuned into everything, could this be Mo Bangura’s time as a few on here have hinted at? This is a fairytale Club where everyone who is anyone wants to experience it.

Tony Watt is not a product of the Celtic youth Academy

He is a signing from Airdrie Utd £80,0000 2011

  17. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

    Pfayr

Watt was signed from Airdrie, I believe.

Is he in the first team?

If not who is keeping him out?

    Lassad, Miku?

    Hooper?

I’d play Watt every week and Mcgeough would be in there too!

    Otherwise, what’s the point?

I think McGeough was brought on for the final 3 minutes on saturday.

    Eh!?

What was the point of that?????

Somebody explain that too me please.

Re Ibrahimovic,I read an article recently-in FOURFOURTWO?-which said that Messi made it clear that he was off if Ibrahimovic stayed.

Another article said that Messi was none-too-pleased with the presence of Villa in the side.

  22. Johann Murdoch

    That’s my experience of banks

Their lending rates bare no relation to the current base rate and hurt arrangement fees are verging on fraud

  23. Philbhoy

I listed only players who earned us a transfer fee in going. Aiden alone probably paid a fair slice of development costs.

If we are going to compare player development costs against transfer market costs then you must include the costs of all your transfer market failures in the column too. Money paid for Gravesen, Jarosik, JVOH, N’Guemo, Bangura, Juarez and others who left because they were no longer good enough for us and had not made it. Let’s compare like with like.

And then, let’s look and see whether any of the other clubs, including the big spending clubs, are ditching their youth academies. If Chelsea, Man U, Barca and Bayern still run large youth academies, are they just subject to mass delusion? Or is it more likely that punters like ourselves, have little insight into the relative unit costs and benefits of player development as opposed to placing complete trust in gambling on the transfer market?

I disagree re-Sammy, he is a threat, “a”being the word, if he is the only threat it doesn’t work, we need more than one. Notice how much better he plays with the other two in the team, they supply him with opportunities to threaten, either direct running or crossing, or an effort on goal. He also plays better in Europe, why could that be?

For me it’s about space, he runs into and uses space very well in Europe, that space isn’t available in the SPL. I agree about the potential in the squad, but it is still only potential thus far.

Miss Doc has had her day on the big screen at the last home game, a big”Sweet Sixteen” banner, she is 16 on Wednesday and will miss the game. My attendance is in doubt for the same reason, negotiations have stalled;-)
