Celtic midfield problems

645

Neil Lennon accepted responsibility for the tactical decision to start yesterday’s game with three at the back, saying, “We thought the three would suit us, but that didn’t seem to be the case. We looked a little bit flat the first 10-15 minutes and I don’t know why.”

Hibernian scored during this period, which may or may not have been a result of the defensive line-up, but if anything, Celtic were even flatter after they went to four at the back.  The game was a throwback to the days when Gordon Strachan’s teams worked hard but seldom inspired.

The midfield didn’t dominate enough of the ball to prevent Hibs creating several good chances and was unable to craft a clear-enough opening.  With Charlie Mulgrew on the field we are always dangerous, and Kris Commons has a better sense of where the goal is than anyone at the club, but without them we grasp to Paddy McCourt, who only seems to get the call when we’re in trouble.

So where do we need to strengthen next month……………?

I think the actions of the banks just towards small businesses will make the PPI misselling look like small beer in comparison .. Young new inexperienced ” relationship ” managers trying to look like billy big baws .. And failing miserably hh

Up to dens with mate who’s business borrowing although he had halved it in last 2 years now pays 300% more. No other bank will touch for any less.

I have no problem with defending, our attacking play was back to usual yesterday, slow, boring, and predictable…

We made our other two subs, the more important tactical subs at 66 and 70 minutes.

How early do they need to be made before they are not wrong? Is there a rule that Neil Lennon needs to be advised of in order to learn how to do this better?

  8. Bhoys,

I think this needs to be said; I usually prefer to lurk. Yesterday I was criticised because, having read one particular poster criticise our club and support for two or three days without any apparent cause, and coming to doubt his provenance, I challenged him and suggested that people scroll on rather than engage him. I didn’t participate in the discussion about Dundee, because I wasn’t there. I do, however, trust several posters who were, and tend to accept their description of events. That doesn’t mean I, or they, accept or condone anti-social behaviour, but that I suspect, as ever, that reports about our club are subject to exaggeration and misreporting by the media and others who wish us ill.

Today, the subject is substitutions, player signing policies and tactics. We all, of course, have opinions. We are entitled to them. However, only one person is paid to make the calls.

In my job, I can risk discipline or unemployment because other people fail to perform. I can be judged in terms of the performance of the students I teach. As a result, I tend to defend my methodologies vigorously. I often ignore armchair critics.

NFL has taken a team from ignominious defeat by St Mirren to championship-winning form, several cup finals, European success and all on a shoestring. I think he has earned the right to our patience and support, and I think we should judge his performance at the end of the season.

I just think the team have been pretty good this year, and I’m glad Neil does his job as well as he does.

    Hail Hail!

I was thinking about the counter attack. Agree we don’t lose too many at corners but putting Watt, for eg, on the half way line may pay dividends.

was he not a big admirer of some of our players when he was at Spurs

  14. BT/Prestonpans

Mourinho sometimes would leave four up front at opposition corners causing them to stifle their own attack for fear of losing a breakaway goal

I think he was working on the premis that the forwards were crap at defending anyway and would be better served distracting the opposition than actually trying to defend in the box

‘Arry came up to watch Broonie v Arsenal in CL qualifier a few years ago.

Any Celtic player who wanted to go to QPR should go see their shrink as a matter of urgency. Watched them again today, a car crash of a football club. Another media attention seeking owner who has no clue how to build a football club. Throw stupid money after stupid money on mercenaries.

I never in any of my posts said that any of these young players were failures!

What I did say is that their future does not lie with us because the MANAGER won’t play them from the start.

Previous MANAGERS did not play our young potential stars from the start.

Mickybhoy1888 listed about 100 (YES ONE HUNDRED) players from the youths/academy a few posts back.

    Where are they all now?

How many are featuring in our first team today? To the nearest two?

    Forrest?

A poor result over a long period in my opinion.

I posted at the start of the season that I feared for young ghuys like Watt and McGeough making a name for themselves at Celtic.

    I still do.

Play them or lose them or transfer them out!!!!

  17. The PSG owner said about the FPP “Platini told us to get creative with our finances”

I believe Platini son is employed by the same Qatari’s that own PSG, and also will host the 2022 World Cup, no chance FPP will work how we’d like it to.

  18. I have made this appeal a few times in the past.

    Might be worth another try.

Would the guys who seem to have all the solutions on how we should be playing, & which players we should be bringing in or moving on, & how much money the club should spend,.. at least give us a wee resumé of the clubs that they have managed, scouted for or been on the board of, & how successful they were in comparison with NFL, John Park & our maligned ‘bored’.

I don’t doubt that there are some very gifted football brains on the site, but I have to admit that I’m not one of them.

I find it difficult to manage my beer money.

Don’t put in any more than 2 or 3 of your past footballing positions on your CV.

We may be pushed for space.

I’m sure Mr Redknapp would want a couple of our players, if they wanted to go fight, and loose, relegation in the EPL, rather than face Juve, then let them go, but I doubt they will.

That list alone is not evidence on which any intelligent person would make up their mind.

You would also need need a list of all the players transferred in for fees or on Bosmans. I dare say that could be made to look like a seething indictment of using the transfer system.

But, even then, you would have to compare the development costs and salary costs of the players in your Development list and then compare it with the transfer fees and salaries paid for the players who were brought to the club having been developed elsewhere.

And, finally you would have to factor in the money you made from transferring out developed players as compared to re-transferring players from your bought list.

Then you would have a proper cost:benefit analysis.

I would argue again that all serious clubs and all serious football people seem to want to make use of both systems and no-one relies on the transfer system alone, not even Man City.

I also disagree that it is all about opinions. Yes, as far as bumping gums on this blog is concerned, your view is as good as mines and as good as Philbhoy’s, and that’s whether we go to all games or none. But in the real world, you will only be trusted with a manager’s job and a manager’s responsibilities if you have a track record of success.

    I don’t. How bout’ you?

    Ref bottle comment.

Usually you analyse things pretty thoroughly,so on the basis of my comments doesn’t it look possible?.

Alternatively perhaps he’s keepings his assets undamaged which is still a nett loss to us.

We should be playing Tony Watt right up there in the 6 yard box,not the wing,he’s rough, fast, and can score, and most importantly for a centre. not feart.

  24. SFTB

The timing of substitutions are only correct or otherwise after the fact

Ie if we’re chasing the game a sub is made and we score ..genius …..fail to score …eejit…wrong sub made / too late etc

I believe you are one of CQN’s top posters and I always read your posts.

However, I will not agree with you on the development/young players progress until we start seeing youngsters ACTUALLY becoming regular first team players.

It is just not happening just now and I can’t see it changing in the near future.

    I hope I’m wrong.

    Otherwise……what is the point?

You don’t have to answer that.
