Celtic midfield problems

645

Neil Lennon accepted responsibility for the tactical decision to start yesterday’s game with three at the back, saying, “We thought the three would suit us, but that didn’t seem to be the case. We looked a little bit flat the first 10-15 minutes and I don’t know why.”

Hibernian scored during this period, which may or may not have been a result of the defensive line-up, but if anything, Celtic were even flatter after they went to four at the back.  The game was a throwback to the days when Gordon Strachan’s teams worked hard but seldom inspired.

The midfield didn’t dominate enough of the ball to prevent Hibs creating several good chances and was unable to craft a clear-enough opening.  With Charlie Mulgrew on the field we are always dangerous, and Kris Commons has a better sense of where the goal is than anyone at the club, but without them we grasp to Paddy McCourt, who only seems to get the call when we’re in trouble.

So where do we need to strengthen next month……………?

I wasn’t having a go . Sorry if it appeared that way .

Tbh …I hadn’t thought about Hooper in that fashion ..you could be right …as he was assaulted by Bougherra with impunity

  2. Cowiebhoy, I met my wife at the 10 anniversary dance, 1986. She was also a member.

Did my Dad sign that card? The bus in 73 was still the Cowie bus, it folded in 75, it was in 76 our bus started. I’ll check my facts, but I’m pretty sure.

  3. Kayal33,

i think Harry recognises that he has a team full of players more interested in money,

he said so a week or 2 ago, unless some team buys big in the window i think

QPR will be top spenders,i am sure he had Forrest watched last season too

I generally view from afar on this blog everyday.

I have tried to generate some Celtic football chat, without having a fallout, as has been the case for past few weeks – even though I did put my neck on line with Sammi comment.

    Plus blog was quiet.

I am 100% behind Lenny and the Clubs direction.

Incidentally I am also a Manager, but NOT in football

    Hail Hail

  5. Thank God for that, Blantyre Tim.

I was getting an inferiority complex, thinking that I am the only person who doesn’t have all the answers.

I just needed a good grumph.

I love the way Celtic is being run.

    Good Luck.

  8. Cowiebhoy,

Correction, it was indeed 1973 the bus started, the first dance wasn’t until 1976, the 10th anniversary dance was not the Supporters bus, it was the dance.

Just checked my facts with my Dad.

“Play them or lose them or transfer them out!!!!”

James Forrest, Dylan McGeouch and Tony Watt are not agitating for transfers. They are all happy with the game time they are getting. In contrast to some previous managers, Neil Lennon IS giving our youth a chance. But he is doing so in a controlled manner with player development in mind. Youngsters, even talented ones, suffer from inconsistency. A manager must judge when to start them, when to bench them and when to drop them. It is an Art more than a Science. Even Messi did not have an unbroken run following his first appearance.

This is a breakthrough season for Tony Watt and Dylan McGeouch. It is not a season where we should expect them to be regular first team starts.

James Forrest IS an established first team member and is regularly picked when he is free from injury. I fear you have mistaken unavailability for selection with being unwanted for selection. And it is too early in his career to judge that his injury record makes him another Maloney or Anderton.

When Foreign managers assessed the strengths of the Lisbon Lions, they highlighted Gemmell, Murdoch, Johnstone and Lennox primarily. When opposition managers look at our current strengths they will count Forster, Wanyama, Forrest and Sammi primarily.

No problem,I didn’t think for a moment you were having a go,rather seeking more info to support what is probably my unpopular assessment of GH,and his effect on team performance and NL’s decision making.

However having seen them come and go,the ongoing success of the team is more important than any player.

Remind me when these youngsters are playing regularily in the first team.

Previous youngsters did not get a run and are no longer with the club.

    Nothings changed.

  20. Watching the game yesterday it was all too obvious as it has been many times this season in the SPL.

Hibs had a wall of players in front of their defense when we had the ball and it was almost a straight line.

We seemed to have all our players wanting to pick the ball all deep and go square keeping possession in a hope that Hibs would come looking for the ball and create a gap for us to attack, which they did not and were quite content for us to keep possession.

Width is what we need to create room behind this midfield wall but also when we get the ball wide to our fullbacks we need one of our central midfield players to push up and support the forwards this way one of the opposition would have to follow him and thus opening up room for our other midfield players to advance into and our defense to squeeze up and ask questions of our opponents.

All too often we do not move up as a unit with any pace or surprise.

In conclusion less predictability, quicker ball movement and more bodies in the box when we get the ball please Celtic.

Horses for courses of course but I do get the feeling when watching games like yesterday that I know what the next ball is going to be as we are very predicable at times.

Not asking for the old Wimbledon type tactics but we are a big team so now and again take a gamble and get the ball in the mixer more with bodies of course.

  21. My mates been trying to register on here for a couple of weeks now but never been emailed a password.
