Celtic-Milan, the history

258

Celtic first faced Milan on a late season tour of North America, drawing 1-1 in Jersey before winning 2-0 in Toronto.  The Italians would be more than compensated 10 months later when they recorded a 0-1 win at Celtic Park in the quarter final of the European Cup after a 0-0 draw in the San Siro.  Milan would go on to win the Cup that season.

It would be a quarter of a century before the teams met again in the Champions League group stage, 2004.  A late Stanislav Varga equaliser was not enough as Milan hit twice in the final moments of the game.  The teams drew 0-0 at Celtic Park a few weeks later.  Milan contrived to lose a three goal lead in the final to finish runners up to Liverpool that season.

Celtic’s first venture into the Champions League knockout stage was against Milan.  Another 0-0 draw at Celtic Park was followed by 90 minutes of stalemate, where some legitimate Celtic penalty claims were denied, at the San Siro before Kaka scored in extra time.  This time Milan made no mistake as they again faced Liverpool in the final.

The newly crowned European champions returned to Celtic Park in October 2007 when goals by Stephen McManus (officially credited, although I’m not sure he touched the ball) and Scott McDonald were enough for Celtic to overcome a soft penalty awarded to the visitors.  Celtic lost the corresponding game in Milan 1-0.

If the history of these games is anything to go by we should be careful in and around the penalty area.  Italian teams tend to do well out of penalty exchanges in the Champions League – Milan benefited from an outrageous decision in Amsterdam this season.

Celtic go into the game bottom of the group, with everything to gain and nothing to lose.  They are more than equal to the task.

  3. afternoon, 5 hours until Zadok belts out at Celtic park once again, hopefully the beginning of another memorable Celtic victory.

Neil has been a bit more adventurous with team selection this season , so we may see James, Kris & Dirk as well as Sami on the park , with only 2 sitting in midfield.

I would go a bit more cautious James, Kris , Sami in front of 3 Charlie, Beram and Joe

Defence picks itself , so bring it on and lets hope we get the performance and result we wish and will see us in Europe after xmas.

  14. Nigerian centre half, Efe Ambrose believes

Celtic possess the quality to stun seven-time

European champions, AC Milan on Tuesday.

The Hoops welcome Il Diavolo to Celtic Park in

a decisive Uefa Champions League game

knowing that defeat will sound the death knell

on their ambitions of progressing to the round

of 16 of the world’s most glamorous club

    competition.

Ambrose sat down with supersport.com to

assess the chances of the Scottish champions

ahead of potentially difficult games against

    European heavyweights, AC Milan and

Barcelona but insists no one at Celtic Park is

intimidated by the task at hand.

Celtic are without inspirational captain, Scott

Brown, who is still serving a suspension

following his altercation with Barca’s Brazilian

forward, Neymar but Ambrose believes the

    Bhoys can cope.

“We have quality in the Celtic team but many

people do not see it. We also have a lot of

dedication and belief. This is not the first time

we have played under these kinds of

conditions but what is most important is that

we believe we can still qualify for the knockout

stages of the competition,” he said.

The atmosphere at Celtic Park on Tuesday is

expected to be highly charged and Ambrose

highlights the importance of the supporters to

    the actualization of their cause.

“We have the best fans in the world and they

will show their stuff again. If we must beat

Milan on Tuesday, the fans must do what they

usually do but I am sure they will be behind

    us,” he added.

Aaron Ramsey. Pretty much Man of the moment and flavour of the month down south.

He is having a fantastic season,no doubt about it. Yet this time last year, his own fans were giving the young fella so much abuse, particularly at The Emirates Stadium, that Arsene Wenger was advised not to play him!

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/arsenal/10474219/Arsene-Wenger-I-was-told-to-drop-Aaron-Ramsey-for-Arsenal-home-games.html

Seems a bit of patience and encouragement works wonders. Once the fans realise that, young players may be allowed to cock up now and again.

  21. From the start of the 2015-16 season, top- flight clubs in Poland will be allowed a maximum of three non-EU players in any one game, with the figure being reduced to two from the following season onwards.
