Celtic-Milan, the history

258

Celtic first faced Milan on a late season tour of North America, drawing 1-1 in Jersey before winning 2-0 in Toronto.  The Italians would be more than compensated 10 months later when they recorded a 0-1 win at Celtic Park in the quarter final of the European Cup after a 0-0 draw in the San Siro.  Milan would go on to win the Cup that season.

It would be a quarter of a century before the teams met again in the Champions League group stage, 2004.  A late Stanislav Varga equaliser was not enough as Milan hit twice in the final moments of the game.  The teams drew 0-0 at Celtic Park a few weeks later.  Milan contrived to lose a three goal lead in the final to finish runners up to Liverpool that season.

Celtic’s first venture into the Champions League knockout stage was against Milan.  Another 0-0 draw at Celtic Park was followed by 90 minutes of stalemate, where some legitimate Celtic penalty claims were denied, at the San Siro before Kaka scored in extra time.  This time Milan made no mistake as they again faced Liverpool in the final.

The newly crowned European champions returned to Celtic Park in October 2007 when goals by Stephen McManus (officially credited, although I’m not sure he touched the ball) and Scott McDonald were enough for Celtic to overcome a soft penalty awarded to the visitors.  Celtic lost the corresponding game in Milan 1-0.

If the history of these games is anything to go by we should be careful in and around the penalty area.  Italian teams tend to do well out of penalty exchanges in the Champions League – Milan benefited from an outrageous decision in Amsterdam this season.

Celtic go into the game bottom of the group, with everything to gain and nothing to lose.  They are more than equal to the task.

  4. With no strikers or on-from forwards we’ll be heavily reliant on set pieces and shots from outside the box tonight.

    VVD would be my punt for a goal tonight. The big fella has his eye in. Our Italian correspondents will be able to tell you how good AC Milan are in the air though.

    Commons is worth a punt and there is a stat somewhere that he has scored an amzing amount of first goals in the Hoops.

    If he scores at all it’s usually the first one.

  18. Celtic will not have a jet-lagged central defender as happened last season against Juventus and will not make the mistake of going for the jugular this time. Derks long sojourn on the bench will mean a fit player hopefully rarin’ to go. We have the Great Wall and an experienced back four so let’s keep it tight and hit them on the break. Would love to see Balotelli get the line for diving, be careful with that cheat. Come on ye Bhoys In Green.

  19. No worriesd pintaguiness, just had a quick look at google maps.

    Not sure if you are coming from the M8/M80 or M74, but the entrance to The Creamery is on The Gallowgate directly opposite Society Street if you put that in your GPS.

    Enjoy the game.

    ” be careful with that cheat ”

    Indeed -he has working on a new ” skill ” . With his back to goal and with the ball at his feet and a defender snapping at his heels, he does a turn and goes up and over the thigh of the defender. Cue Ref seeing a foul..

    NB ———Birsa is very dangerous from free kicks.

  21. Business emergency stopped me getting on the Dubai-Glasgow express today. Broken heart and spare ticket and a few bottles sitting down to EuroSport for the young boys…

    …jealous as …but great to see CQNers rallying on tickets there. Great to be a Tim.

    Wish we could give Commons a wee bit of Derk’s pace and Derk a wee bit of Common’s productivity. Like to see Ledley and Commons shoot on sight tonight.

    Shout a big Hail Hail for me!

  22. I find that going into these games with an attitude of not expecting much, not only reduces the disappointment if much is not delivered, but geometrically increases the joy when it is.

    If I start to think about tonight’s game, I won’t get anything done, so I’ve diverted myself by thinking about stuff that also allows me to get my work done To whit:

    Previously all talk of selling Murray Park for housing was nixed for 2 reasons:

    1) the flood plain – I never gave this much credence as the main flood area is further down the river and I’ve never known that part of the Allander to flood in years.

    2) Milne/Cala had permission to build 550 houses in the Kilmardinny area that would actually run up to the edge of MP but more importantly this was decreed to be the limit that the infrastructure would support, so there were to be no further developments.

    A number of things have happened since then:

    1) the planning permission lapsed due to wrangles over re-siting the Allander Centre;

    2) West of Scotland rugby club sold their part of the development land to Waitrose;

    3) Milne/Cala are now putting 135 houses on the site of the old bus garage next to the existing Allander Centre.

    To me this re-opens the prospect for MP to be sold for development. Let’s say you can get permission for 200 houses (it’s a much bigger site than the bus garage) at an average price of £200k (which is reasonable for Milngavie) that would net you £40M. On that basis you’d happily pay upwards of £5M for the land. Which I’m sure the owners would be happy to accept.

    I’m in fantasy land once again. On the other hand. Hmm….
