CELTIC MISS OUT ON ‘FOUR-MILLION DOLLAR MAN’

CELTIC have missed out on ‘Four-Million Dollar Man’ Mark McKenzie, according to a report in the States.

The Hoops were first linked with the 21-year-old Philadelphia Union central defender in the summer, as CQN reported.

The champions did not follow up their initial interest in the newly-capped American international with the £2million season-long loan arrival of Shane Duffy from Brighton.

Now it looks as though any move for McKenzie in the January transfer window will be doomed to failure with the player’s club apparently agreeing a fee with Genk.

The Philadelphia Inquirer state a Celtic bid of nearly $4million has been knocked back with the centre-back heading for Belgium in the coming weeks.

Agents previously insisted McKenzie was on the radar of clubs throughout Europe, mainly England and Germany, and the player discussed the possibility of emulating his hero Virgil van Dijk at the Parkhead club.

The newspaper report admitted the transfer fee isn’t known yet, but added: “Since the Union turned down Celtic’s bid, it’s a safe bet that they’re going to make more money from Genk”.
