Celtic need to learn resuscitation methods

980

Celtic have lost in the game immediately after three of their previous four European games, shipping nine points which could be crucial in determining the destination of the championship, so it was not surprising they were below par for much of the game yesterday.  Fortunately, the Aberdeen goal came early enough to allow Celtic time to raise their game and respond.

How Celtic respond after European games will become even more crucial in the weeks ahead as they have visits to Motherwell, Dundee United and St Johnstone due after our next three Europa League games.  Any slim championship aspirations will be extinguished in these games if Celtic are unable to improve performance for the league challenge.

Ally McCoist is defying early predictions and grinding out impressive results for Rangers, who will seldom have started the league with such an impressive defensive record.  Six away wins from six games without conceding a goal is the kind of form it takes to win leagues.

Our more immediate challengers, Motherwell, dropped two points on Saturday, meaning we can go two points clear of them if we win our game in hand, however, the teams meet at Fir Park a week on Sunday (three days after Celtic play Rennes), in what looks like being a key game in our season.

  1. After the recent BBC documentary re. Craig Whyte’s alleged criminality and suspension from being a director of a British company for 7 years, I noted on various Timternet blogs many posters advocating that they would consider not renewing their season books if our board voted supporting a newco Rangers FC being allowed to re-enter SPL in the event that existing Rangers FC incur a liquidation event that sees the current Ranger FC die. I decided it would be a good idea to attempt to garner the view of the Celtic support so I created a Poll asking the following question of the Celtic support:

In the event that Rangers FC experience a liquidation event were a new company, Rangers FC 2012, is born from the ashes of embarrassment, do you believe our club, Celtic FC, should vote to allow the new company to take the place of the old, defunct, Rangers FC in the SPL with immediate effect.

(At time of writing ) 1085 voted.

    No. – 1052 97%

    Yes. – 26 2%

    Not Sure – 7 1%

If you not voted already please do so via Have your say – Poll

The more Celts who vote the more powerful a statement to our board the results will be. The Poll will be open for another 24 days so please pass, email, txt, twitter, facebook, post on other Celtic sites.

What do you expect the club to do? Drop our ST prices because you can get an EPL one for the same cost but the quality of football is higher? If we were guaranteed a minimum £30M from tv I dare say our quality would be higher.

I know what won’t make it higher. Dropping the current ST price.

Recurring observation from me .. Applied a bit wider:

How many seasons do players deserve to stake their claim?

I always feel 2 is the right answer. A season to bed in and a season to establish themselves. I don’t recall too many players who have flunked first 2 seasons and then set the heather on fire from Season 3 onwards.. Doubtless some CQN ers will give me names but these are surely the exception rather than the rule.

How long for a Manager? How long for a CEO?

I’d give both 2 seasons as well.

On that basis.. We keep faith with Lenny until May.

We wave bye bye to Lawwell.

Thank you and goodbye to quite a few players..?

Maybe if teams actually tried against them rather than sit back and take it, those stats might change.

It seems to me that every team raises there game against us and not against them, which i’m sure will be the case at Pittodrie on Saturday, especially after Craig Brown’s ridiculous comments on Sportscene last night.

    I really hope i’m wrong.

I think teams are trying against them. I’d look closer to home for an explanation of why we are trailing them.

They are rubbish but we are worse. Thank PL and co for that.

  7. Bhoys,

Just on briefly to express my sincere gratitude for the posts, texts and emails that I’ve received from CQNers since my dad died in the early hours of Sunday.

Tommy Burns famously said, “I want to thank the Celtic support. For being there, and always being there”.

My dad loved that quote. He and Tommy were right and the kind words that I’ve read are, and will be, a source of strength in the days ahead.

Now get back to talking about Celtic please.

    Hail Hail

I think it’s slightly more subtle than that. If I was less lazy, I’d trawl the internet for manager’s saying a)”You need to have a go, you’ve got nothing to lose” – against Rangers and b) “You need to keep it tight, and hope you can catch them on the break” – against Celtic. Certainly the former leaves them more open to conceding. That said we should have the quality to break defensive teams down.

Overall though it means that no accusations of not trying are legitimate, merely of failed/successful tactics.

  10. Henrik

Is it the case other teams raise their game against us and not them or is it the case that the Rangers play every game as if their lives depend on it and ours don’t?

If they are relegated I suppose they can always get the old ‘warm ‘ and ‘cold’ balls for cup draws to ensure we get the chance to play them every season!

  13. greenjedi – Rangers look organised, determined, and prepared to put a bit of stick about for 90 minutes of every game.

We, at the moment, do not.

I have devised a mathematical formula for this:

    More stick = more success.

Philvis. Are you suggesting that Wee Craig is the Michael Barrymore of football club ownership?

I can see how that would work on a number of levels ;))

  15. So, let’s see where we are today.

Oh, yes. Got a squad of about 400, give or take, of which 4, maybe 5, are fairly decent.

Got a guy in charge who’s team selection, tactics, substitutions and general motivational ability are all constantly called into question here and many other places.

So, a few average players led by a guy who cannot manage.

And that, my friends, is why Rangers will have the league wrapped up before the Xmas presents.

Still, as long as we can enjoy their financial trials and tribulations, eh ?

They could go into admin, get docked 10 points and still win the league at a canter !

Things need to change at CP fast or we’ll be re-defining ’embarrassment’.

  16. Paul,

Your articles are very similar to your style of writing in 2007/8 season when all looked lost. We won the league with a run of games including beating the huns twice.

I only hope we have a smilar ending to this season, but it’s hard to see at the moment.

I feel sure your poll will show the overwhelming majority of Celtic fans opposing any action by our board to save Rangers or let a resurrected Rangers into the SPL.

If it doesn’t then that will be because a link to your poll will have been posted on a Rangers fans’ site.

However, I have no confidence in our Board paying any heed to what we want and feel sure they would vote to keep them in, seeing it as in Celtic’s commercial interest.

philvisreturns 12.38 In my opinion Rangers have players who can look after themselves and they also keep there shape well we on the other hand have a team of nice guys.We need to toughen up and learn to give it out as well as take it also we need to be more disciplined and keep our shape during matches. We cannot afford any more slip ups we really need a long winning run if we have any hope of winning the league.H.H.

    Philvis,

I agree with what you say. Only problem with your formula:

More stick = Lots of red cards.

    ……………………………..

Why, they just have to show the same commitment/urgency they did yesterday to get back in front. No need to go flying into tackles.

Talent and ability only beats hard work when talent and ability work hard!
