Celtic, Newco, commercial departments

188

When Newco signed up for the Ange Homecoming Tour, I’m pretty sure they didn’t know that is how it would be billed.  It also seems clear they didn’t know they agreed to participate for less than half the sum that Celtic were able to attract.

These are interesting times in Newco finances, they are not in a position to be fussy about a sizeable fee (we are not completely out of the financial woods either).  Football club directors never want to make unpopular decisions, but they know sometimes their salary requires them to put priorities before popularity.  That’s what this is.  It is then the job of the PR department to sensitively commuicate unpopular decisions to fans.  Can you imagine having this job at a major club?  It takes skill and guile, and even then, the best you can hope for is to be marginally disliked.

The Newco board need to pay the wages, so were obliged to take the money and attempt to sell the decision to their fans.  I could say the same about Celtic’s decision, albeit this fee is not dependent on Newco being in attendance (they may yet pull out).

That the Newco board were not aware of the “Ange Homecoming Tour” billing, or that they were the poor relations when it came to payment, is an opportunity for anyone wanting to campaign against them.  Fans and fan groups didn’t want the game, but there’s a touch of humiliation in how business was conducted.  This led to the exchanges between club and shareholder group yesterday, “propaganda”, was the cry!

I’ve seen under the bonnet of the Celtic commercial operation.  In all honesty, I don’t fancy coming up against them.  It is an experienced department that can assess the value of opportunities like this from instinct.  Newco are still new in a corporate sense.  If they retain their current commercial crop, they will learn from this and be less exposed in future, but 10 years of innovative corporate leadership has not cultivated much growth.

None of this puts the ball in the net, but it goes a long way towards what eventually happens on the field.

  1. Really surprised that Japan are attacking with so many players. I can see the Aussies might punish them with a fast counterattack.

  2. Due to the ongoing stramash about the Sydney Cup between Sevco factions, I decided to look up the site for the tournament.

There is no mention of an Ange Homecoming (that was on Celticfc.com and relevant to us only)

Sevco are billed before us and have a gushing bio with ‘most successful etc’

Our bio is a bit more muted, no mention of the Big Cup and only a quick mention of Ange

All the action pictures are of Helander’s goal last game at Ibrox

When you click on the Celtic v Sevco fixture, the only fans shown are Sevconians

Storm in a teacup if it is the ‘Ange’ thing that bugs them. Must be the money or as others have said, hostile takeover stirring

  3. INIQ – not a bad game; Oz losing it in the midfield, so weird Oz have brought on 2x attackers.

Footballers actually ‘learn’ or are coached on how to stamp on opponents feet to concede fouls, right ?

  4. The Ibrox 700 tickets are going to those who missed out on the game in Spring 2020.

    Seems fair

It is interesting that celticfc.com has no mention anywhere about away ticket process any more. It used to say ‘if you are a STH, you are automatically in the draw’

I seriously doubt that I am in any draw now as I got a ticket to Killie in the title run in during 2010/11 when I had been a STH only since summer 2010. Not a sniff since

It could have been a bit of ‘new customer bonus’ back then as the same thing happened when i joined the HCTS; both semis and finals that year.

I am highly unlikely to travel for away games so my interest is only around how it works for folks in Scotland who are desperate to go but are not on a bus . A good few on here.

  5. Disappointed, but not surprised that we have accepted the 700 tickets.

    CONEYBHOY

It isn’t a draw for away tickets.

It’s more if a league table, where you have to have attended away games over the last 4/5 years.

Fat cats and GB also get priority

I know I was never taught the stamp on foot technique! Had it done to me a fair few times, but I think most were accidental.

I think the first Japanese booking was an accidental foul. I say that because the game was being played in a very sporting fashion.

The Japanese have missed a host of chances. It’s the type of game where it may end up costing them.

  7. If it stays like this, Hatate, Maeda, Hideguchi and Kyogo are going to Qatar.

    Uh oh, VAR check.

    GOAL!

  8. 4 minutes ET.

    Bathroom break.

Game over. Looks like Japanese automatically qualified. Manager now talking to whole squad.

  9. I think Aussies now have to play 3rd placed team in other Asian Group in play off.

Reflecting on Japan tactics – they deserved to win, but if they play in such an open fashion against, say, Italy or Spain, or any world class counterattacking team, they will lose. That said, it is good to see a team attacking all the time. The World Cup fans will lap it up.

Good morning from a cloudless North Staffs – traveling to East Kilbride for the weekend later today, hope the weather stays fine. 🌤️

GENE, gorgeous day up in ole EK. Looking very bright, clean and green – just the stuff!

  11. INIQUIT – If it stays like this, Hatate, Maeda, Hideguchi and Kyogo are going to Qatar…

Yep, but they’d need to fight super-hard for a starting berth. Maeda the only shoo-in.

Now, twin-leg, sudden death for the Aussies v the UAE. and if successful, the best out of 5 South American teams.

They’ll need Tommy Rogic for those games for sure.

  12. Quadraphenian,

Guchi hasn’t been near the national team since 2019 so would exclude him. I think the 3 amigos are a shoe-in.

  13. NEW INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL EVENT TO BRING HISTORIC DERBY TO SYDNEY

The NSW Government has secured an exciting new international football event, which will see some of the world’s best football clubs playing in Sydney in 2022 and 2025.

The Sydney Super Cup is a new four-team football mini-series featuring two high profile international teams against Sydney’s A-League clubs, Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers FC.

The inaugural event is set to make history with traditional Scottish rivals Celtic FC and Glasgow Rangers FC coming out to play their first ever derby outside of Scotland in the 134-year history of the world-famous rivalry.

Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade, Minister for Tourism and Sport and Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said this was a great coup for Sydney.

“Sydney has kicked another goal as Australia’s home of football with the world’s best clubs coming out to play our hometown heroes in the Sydney Super Cup. What better way to start than with a historic rivalry like the Celtic vs Rangers derby,” Mr Ayres said.

Celtic’s Australian Head Coach Ange Postecoglou will be returning Down Under later this year with his club.

“This will be the first time in history this iconic matchup has been played outside of Scotland, so this will be a huge attraction for football fans domestically and abroad.

“With three big matches played over five nights, visiting football fans will have an opportunity for an extended stay in the Harbour City, enjoying our vast cultural offerings, and vibrant hospitality and nightlife in one of the world’s great sporting cities.

“The benefits for our city and state will be huge, as we look to bring visitors back to Sydney by creating a regular blockbuster bi-annual event that will showcase our city, our local teams and our world-class stadiums to the rest of world.

“The NSW Government is focused on delivering marquee events like the Sydney Super Cup that capture the world’s attention, drive the NSW visitor economy and build Sydney’s reputation as the major events capital of the Asia Pacific.”

The NSW Government has secured the Sydney Super Cup for 2022 and 2025 through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW in partnership with TEG Live.

The 2022 Sydney Super Cup kicks off on Wednesday 16 November. More information about this event and ticket sales will be released soon.

It’s OK though because the term The Old Firm wasn’t used.

  14. RANGERS FC

Rangers Football Club is not only Scotland’s most successful football club, but the most successful club in the World. Put simply, no club has won more than Rangers.

After a difficult decade which saw the Light Blues demoted to the fourth tier of Scottish football , Rangers, with the backing of their incredible supporters, returned to the Scottish Premiership and won their record-breaking 55th title in 2021.

Managed by Netherlands legend and former Gers, Arsenal and Barcelona player Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Rangers have become regular participants in the knockout stages of European competition in recent seasons and boast a young, exciting and diverse playing squad, packed with internationalists from across the globe.

Rangers play at the world-famous and historic Ibrox Stadium, with a capacity of over 50,000. It is renowned all over Europe as having a truly unique atmosphere, with sold-out crowds and football’s most loyal fanbase roaring the team on every single week.

UAE the likely opponents for the Aussies, but not a shoo-in yet. They have 2 games to play, and are 3 points ahead of following team.

Just watched Son’s goal again. He hits it so hard, the goalie can’t hold on to it.

Thanks St Tams – similar to Scotland club when i was in it – we used to take tickets just to keep our points up and sell them on. They stopped that by making us pick up tickets in the host city with our passports

  17. Emeraldbee

Thanks for that – just started my journey on train from Congleton to Manchester

    Beautiful down here.

  18. BIG WAVY

When wrote: ‘INIQUIT – If it stays like this, Hatate, Maeda, Hideguchi and Kyogo are going to Qatar…’

I was actually quoting INIQUITOUSIV who’d said “If it stays like this…etc etc”

For me, the way Japan are playing, only Daizen will get an auto-start. Japan brought on 3 subs in this game and overlooked Reo completely. Kyogo isn’t yet a 2nd choice striker for the Sammy Blues. HH
