Celtic on knife-edge

278

We have all the excuses in the world, but if you cannot beat Dundee United, or Livingston, teams with vastly weaker squads than the Celtic teams they denied five points to over the last 8 days, you do not deserve to win the league.

Celtic will improve.  Kyogo Furuhashi, Callum McGregor, Greg Taylor and James Forrest are known quantities who will lift performances and results.  Georgios Giakoumakis will surely also add something.  When we get Christopher Jullien fit he will bring experience to the back line.  Right now that matters little, six points adrift after seven games is the form that leaves confidence on a knife-edge.

Jota was outstanding, a one-man siege of the Dundee United back line, he deserved more from those around him.  Again, Liel Abada timed his run into the box perfectly to head home at the back post.  Anthony Ralston committed to a tackle a minute later and suffered an unfortunate ricochet.  It was not the worst defensive error you have seen from Celtic this year, but from there, Dundee United made no mistake.

Albian Ajeti was already having an afternoon to forget (think Kazim-Richards, but less mobile) when, within seconds of conceding, Abada’s cutback found him three yards from goal.  The striker snatched at the chance and sent it high over the bar.  Ange Postecoglou had no choice to persist with Albian, although surely we will see little of him when fitness allows others to play.

James McCarthy was clattered early and scarcely left the centre circle before being replaced at halftime.  This pleased most around me, but it took Ismaila Soro most of the second half to retain possession.  If McCarthy is not yet fully fit, he should be left before further reputational damage occurs.

On another day one of the three chances that rattled United crossbar would have gone in and the chat would be about digging out a win the way champions do.  Instead, we flattered to deceive, the way those with nothing but sob stories at the end of the season do.

  4. I usually say Good morning CQN but it isn’t today

Garry was larger than life, loved his family, Celtic, musical concerts et al, he had many stories to share on all of them, he was a man whose heart was in the right place, a good man.

I have a treasured photo of me being welcomed back into the bosom of some wonderful CQN people in a pub in Lisbon after hospital, me tucking into a very healthy meal (sic) and Garry beside me keeping an eye on me

Condolences to his family who will be devastated, sleep easy my friend

  5. I am devastated to hear about Garry’s death at such a young age.

One year he was out of work and I had the pleasure of giving him my ticket to a match. He came to my office and I found out just what a good guy he was. He returned the ticket exactly as had been arranged.

RiP Garry – i will always remember you fondly.

  6. Devastated this morning to learn of the passing of Garry. Played golf with him 3 or 4 times over the summer and he was so proud to ‘show off’ his local course in Dalmuir. he really was one of life’s good guys and will be missed.

A great Celtic supporter and CQN’r.

    RIP Garry / DD.

That post was in response to someone, I can’t recall who, saying that DD wasn’t ill, merely unwell, and would recover, or words to that effect.

Perhaps you should direct your anger at whoever that was.

Whilst I didn’t know DD, and we had some forthright (on both sides) exchanges on here I am shocked and saddened at the news of his death. May he rest in peace.

  13. Sorry to hear the news about Garry. I have never met him personally but by all accounts, that was my loss.

My condolences to all his family and friends

  14. Just logged in at work and found out my boyhood friend Garry (DD) has passed away, to say I am devastated is an understatement.

I remember Garry the kid who would play football with us, he was a couple of years older than me and we loved a good game of football. I also remember going into Garry’s garden Aiplle raiding as his mum had a back and front door and he had a big Alsatian that would scare the life out of us, even when went to his door to see if he was coming out.

I used to bump into him later in life when out drinking as we went about with different groups and then hadn’t seen him for years, met up with him through this blog and loved reading his posts about Knightswood and we met up in Coias a few years ago and kept meaning to meet up again but family always got in the way.

I am absolutely gob smacked by this news.

I knew he was not well but thought it was just that unwell.

Can anyone shed any light into what happened?

    If not I respect that.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this terrible time.

    May Garry rest in peace.

    D :)

  17. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

I rarely post regarding sad news about fellow Celts on here (that I don’t actually know in person)

If his friends will forgive the intrusion I’d like to make an exception for “Delaney’s Dunky”.

Reading the comments this morning I was struck not just by their beauty but also by the sheer volume.

Garry clearly touched the hearts of many on here in a very personal and overwhelmingly positive way.

My sincere condolences to you all and to his family.

A reminder perhaps to us all that their are real people with a shared bond behind the monikers.

For my small part, I enjoyed your craic DD

    Rest In Peace 🙏

  20. Almere at 9:12 a.m.

The passing of Garry is truly devastating. Meeting up with Garry in Pink Street was one of the highlights of The Lisbon Trip. He looked in really good form just a month ago at the St Mirren match and even suited that trendy beard of his….. an even- more- handsome Tim, if you can imagine that. Sadly now won’t make it down here as planned that day.

All thoughts to his family who have lost a real gem.

Spoczywaj w pokoju, my Polish friend.

P.S. Can someone get in touch with Mr Z.

  21. Almore, of course. Predictive text is really annoying.

Now going to find a dictionary to find out what Almere means😡

  22. @An….There will be a dedicated page soon on Memories of Garry……

Prob sentinel Celts……Great stories of a good Bhoy…

Iv’e got a cracker from yonks ago and i’m sure many of the troops

    will share as well..

  23. Devastated to hear that DD has passed away. I didn’t realise that he was ill but was getting concerned about him as he didn’t appear to be reading the messages I sent him recently. He was always one to reply.

An absolutely wonderful man and the world will be poorer for his passing.

Eternal rest grant to him Oh Lord and may Perpetual Light shine upon him.

    RIP Garry

  24. I cannae believe this.

Garry will be playing on the Best Pool table now.

    Garry, see you soon Bro.

    A Wonderful Man.

The World has just got a bit dimmer.

  25. What is the Stars on

    Very sad news on Garry.

Great likeable rogue of a guy.

Had the pleasure of meeting him several times in Glasgow and also in Dublin and Lisbon..

Always good for a laugh..Heart of Gold though. Went to Easter Road with him a couple of years ago. Hibs (under Lennon) beat Celtic (under Rodgers) 2 nil..but we had a laugh and a few pints in pub near the ground…BGFC and the wee man were there also…full of life…sleep well
