Celtic only UK former winner in Champions League draw

360

Celtic are Britain’s only former winner in this afternoon’s Champions League group stage draw, joining four English clubs, attempting to secure the trophy for the first time. Both Spanish former winners, Barcelona and Real Madrid, are there, as are Portuguese winners, Benfica and Porto.

Like Britain, only one of Italy’s former champions – Juventus – are in this season’s tournament. Past champions from Germany, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund made it, while Netherlands’ Eindhoven complete the line-up of nine former European champions in this season’s group stage.

Best of luck to all former champions.

Enjoy the draw, and remember, game dates can be changed, so be careful if you’re booking flights.

  9. As I understand it, UEFA are keeching themselves in case the Huns upstage the entire CL draw by unveiling a marquee signing.

    Only nine previous winners.

I guess it’s nailed on then for a move towards automatic qualification for the big countries. Maybe even for the big clubs in the big countries (regardless of finishing position in league).

  14. I don’t think any of the English teams would rather travel to Celtic Park than the likes of Rostov in Pot 4. They will be confident of rolling over the likes of Rostov & Ludogorets yet know they will in a real blood & thunder encounter up here against us.

Just that you posted only a portion of what had been written which made my response look churlish.

Respect , however that you defuse my testy response with humour.

  19. Good afternoon CQN

    Bring it on

Can’t wait to see who we get in the draw

A wee song to keep you going until the draw

O-ver and O-ver, we will follow you,

O-ver and O-ver, we will see you through,

We are Celtic supporters, faithful through and through,

and over and over, we will follow you.

If you go to Germany, you will see us there,

France or Spain its all the same,

    We’ll go any where,

We’ll be there to cheer you,

    as you travel round,

you can take us anywhere, we won’t let you down.

    Chorus

If you go to Lisbon, we’ll go once again,

In Zaire you’ll find us there calling out your name,

when you need supporting, you will always know,

we’ll be right there with you, every where you go

    And another wee tune

    Tell all the huns farewell,

we’ll be going to a danish hotel!

    We’ll stay with a pal,

    In Villareal,

And we’re welcome in England aswell

Hail Hail The Celts are Here

  20. I see some of the English rags suggesting Jaap Stam wants Efe Ambrose for Reading, apparently to play in a more advanced DM role. Also rumours that we are interested in Reading’s RB Chris Gunter, who reportedly has a £1M release clause.

Would be good if we could offload Efe and get a RB in at the same time. Although it might cost £1M for Gunter but we need to pay £2M if they need to take Ambrose as well!

  21. Tried the CL Draw link – you’ll be grateful I’m not doing the real thing!

    1st go: Real Madrid/ Man. City/ Bor. Munchen……..

    2nd go: Real Madrid/ Bor. Dortmund/ Spurs!!

My thoughts – I would like us to get 2 strong Pot 1&2 teams and a weak Pot 3 team.

Theory: Pots 1&2 won’t take it easy (looking to finish top) against Pots 3&4 – therefore it comes down to a head-to-head between us and the Pot 3 team for the Europa last 32 round (hopefully the decider being a home tie). Anything we could get at CP against one of the Pots 1&2 would be a bonus.

If we were to finish 3rd in the CL Group – then we would be one of the seeded sides in the Last 32 draw against a team finishing 2nd in the Europa League Group Stages.

Illogical – but wishful thinking! :-)

  23. CQN Bus to Paris wouldn’t get passed the ‘which company to use’ discussion with 3 threatened boycotts over set off time, police tip off over potential bevvy and an ethical symposium called over agreeing an average speed and carbon footprint of the trip. Big Mouldy would overtake it on the Bellshill bypass.
