Celtic only UK former winner in Champions League draw

360

Celtic are Britain’s only former winner in this afternoon’s Champions League group stage draw, joining four English clubs, attempting to secure the trophy for the first time. Both Spanish former winners, Barcelona and Real Madrid, are there, as are Portuguese winners, Benfica and Porto.

Like Britain, only one of Italy’s former champions – Juventus – are in this season’s tournament. Past champions from Germany, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund made it, while Netherlands’ Eindhoven complete the line-up of nine former European champions in this season’s group stage.

Best of luck to all former champions.

Enjoy the draw, and remember, game dates can be changed, so be careful if you’re booking flights.

I usually ignore noise on the forums but your continual sniping at the GB and Celtic Trust needs addressing.

The GB by their actions in incurring fines which the club has to pay are parasites ON the body of the club.

You may disagree with the GB but they have brought colour, atmosphere AND MONEY into the club.

    ===============================================

It can all become tedious , BUT the G.B. have cost the club money.

The best representative of the Trust is Hamiltontim.

    We talk. He acts.

I don`t agree with the Trust agenda , but not for one minute would I impugn their intentions.

Couple of recent comments have caught my eye …

GB — Glee club in the manner of High School Musical.

The whole ultra vibe is look at me nonsense that needs to move on.

Home game against HBS — they were not intimidated by the GB waving a few tea towels.

They were when the whole of the JS stand started chanting — something / anything.

The ultra vibe as put forward by the GB is elitist — uber fan exceptionalism.

Also talk about doing up the CP surroundings.

Lots of talk but very little action.

We are falling behind and losing revenue because of it.

Need to upgrade what we have and add a whole range of new facilities.

Starting with a full sized indoor pitch — see Robb Indoor Arenas for what can be done.

Plus we need a training stadium for the U20’s / Dev squad.

My thoughts are that imagination and desire are bigger stumbling blocks now than money.

Finally I would give funds to the school to add facilities to their running track.

Good neighbours — that is who we need to be.

Put some money back into the East End.

  17. Just read Jame Forrest’s blog and got a bit excited

I’d be shocked that Everton would sell McCarthy for 6 or 7 million but he seems confident it could happen.

As for Roberts, we’ve spoken about the likelihood of City doing the deal. However, buy-back clauses wasn’t something I had considered because they are so rarely used in the UK. It would be a good away to keep the fee down.

vfr – just read your article – I get it that parts of sj’s game were ok – do you think he played well against HBS?

    ________________________________________________

I quote directly from the article: “Now I’m not about to tell you that the lad had a great game because he didn’t.”

However, I still admire him for how much he remained involved in the game, never hiding after giving away a penalty and getting booked. He was unfortunate to be left exposed on multiple occasions by Forrest and Lustig so the focus being on him *seemed* to make him appear the culpable one all the time. But the stats don’t lie. He made mistakes, sure; but he was always available for his team mates and his passes were more accurate than almost everyone else.

As for the second goal, I still blame the keeper. There were numerous things he could’ve done to prevent the ball being knocked out of his hands; I would also argue that if it was KT or Lustig who had made the mistake rather than Janko that there wouldn’t have been nearly as much criticism. KT was partially to blame at the first goal although, again, I think the keeper was more at fault; but the criticism of KT (who I think is fantast by the way) is minimal in comparison to that of Janko.

In looking at the game a second time without my Tim specs on, we were comfortable although not a great performance by the team overall; but not nearly as scary second time watching it! I would say that apart from Toure and Sinclair, no-one on the park for the full 97 minutes played at the level required.

  24. Macjay, I agree that the GB have caused the club money in the past; I also moved my seat away from them a number of years ago when my grandson was much younger because I thought much of the singing (and language) was inappropriate for his young ears. I was also kicked of their fan board for criticising their Poppy protest.

I do believe though that they have toned it down a bit and are more controlled. By their nature, any Ultra type fan group will cause the parent club problems and money. It’s the nature of having “teenagers” in the house. You love them dearly but they are a right royal (sic) pain in the arse at times!

  27. I want a group from which we can realistically qualify. No time for sentiment or glamour ties to be out of Europe before Christmas, A third place finish would be satisfactory in a difficult group though.

Let’s start setting the bar higher rather than just being part of the competition.
