Celtic, or Wales, against the world

597

I read Wales defender Connor Roberts say “99% of the world” will support Denmark in their last 16 tie tomorrow and thought- the underdog, fighting against the crowd.  99% of the world will not support Denmark, not me, for a start, but the ‘us against the world’ narrative is one of my favourites.

As a rallying call, it is surely more effective than the alternative.  Today’s footballer is an immensely well catered for athlete, apart from his 90 minutes on the park and (relatively few) hours on the training field, he will struggle for little.  What does he have to fight against, if not perceived ranks of people wanting him to lose?

Beaten, humiliated in Europe, trophy-less, written-off by many among our own, singled-out by the Government.  Ange Postecoglou will not have to work hard to convince the players is really is them against the world.  This squad really does have plenty to fight against.

    QUESTION on 25TH JUNE 2021 2:02 PM

i thought PL’s role going forward was made very clear – European club business only.

    TIMHORTON on 25TH JUNE 2021 2:13 PM

I thought PL was gone June 30th.

POR CIERTO on 25TH JUNE 2021 2:14 PM

PL has left. Only his contract till the end of June remains, por cierto

    ———

    Gents

If Mr Lawwell is to have any direct influence at UEFA he needs to be an active office bearer at a club.

His contract as CEO expires 30/6/2021.

I think him departing the club completely on that date is quite an assumption.

    Excellent :-)))

PS Perhaps unsurprisingly, I was aware of the ` pumping` connotation as I typed but I wasn`t sure if the expression was still in vogue. It obviously is :-))

  3. `The most disappointing thing for me was last years wounds were all self inflicted`

ALL self-inflicted? I can`t agree with that. What about Covid, the SFA, the Scottish Government and the usual bias from the MiB ?

  4. As I said PL is being retained for circa 2 years on the European club business thing. That is regardless of his current role which expires this month.

  5. TOSB

I’ve noticed the changes to the format too.

Been like this for a wee while.

    QUESTION on 25TH JUNE 2021 2:02 PM

If Celtic are to be believed your renewal deadline is 5pm.

    Thank you.

My personal protest will be to renew after the deadline has expired. During the 90s I renewed at the earliest opportunity but the staggering incompetence of last season took me to the brink. Most but not all of my group have renewed however.

  7. Delighted with Anges press conference.

He will decide on JK/GS future, no one else.

    Like him more!

  8. I think the PLC is monitoring me on CQN.

Just had a text message confirming the 5pm deadline, LOL

    ——

Yes – and my point is that to do so he apparently needs to be in a role within a football club.

Just found that Tommy ‘The Doc’ Docherty coached Ange at South Melbourne and Ange played alongside our very own Danny Crainie, who scored more in 1 season at SMFC than at any other club.

It would be interesting to know how this benefits the club.

After all, we don’t budget for Europe and our we have a myopia for domestic affairs.

Think Peter (again) gets the best deal here.

  12. Good presser!!!

The past is past. We can do nothing to change 9iar, quadruple treble, record-breaking unbeaten run, invincible season and one bad season.

Of course we must learn from the recent past and the predominant lesson was ‘how to win’.

Let’s hope for a CEO who can bring us TWENTY-NINE major honours in SEVENTEEN years – I tell you now it will NEVER happen.

Managers? Since the mid-sixties we have had Jock Stein, Billy McNeil, Davie Hay, Martin O’Neil, Gordon Strachan, Neil Lennon, Ronny Deila & Brendan Rodgers who have all brought success to Celtic. Fifty percent were ex-players, twenty-five percent were ‘Celtic-minded’ & two were a bit of surprise at the time.

Ange is an outlier, much like Dr Jo & Wim Jansen. Unlike the latter two he takes over at a time when we have a vocal minority of entitled fans who have ‘taken the huff’ who would happily punish the club.

He will need more than one season.

Will he get a ‘fair shake’?

  13. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Anyone got a link to the media conference?

(Work got in the way ….. tsk, tsk)

SFTB – genuinely laudable effort engaging those who are universally negative ….

    Respect.

(To make a clear distinction – not those posters who occasionally criticise the club but those poor souls who – based on their comments – experience ZERO joy from supporting our beloved club)

…. but I fear it will fall on deaf ears.

Peter Lawwell leaves Celtic in 5 days

Stephen Fletcher didn’t sign for Celtic in 2009

Posts in 2021 still refer to this non-signing

Will this blog be a Lawwell comments free zone starting next week?

    Doubt it.

We know our enemies, haters gonna hate as the say, we can’t control that, what we can do is get our own house in order, which from the outside looking in, is in a bit of a mess.

Bankier was at the presser as ballast on the other end of the see saw.

Like big Ange, Dom was a bit sycophantic for my liking but I understand these are the games we need to play. The usual culprits at the presser with their usual guff, i genuinely hope one of them cross big AP, they say a good hard tackle can get the crowd going well so can a good verbal slap in the face to the SMSM.

  15. HOTEL DE PARIS on 25TH JUNE 2021 2:14 PM

The kds statement or note reads as being quite ageist.

  16. Thought presser went quite well, not too much given away.

The question about 2nd choice i don’t think would be asked in many new manager press conferences, despite recruitment often requiring speaking to a number candidates as standard practice.

I understand that and I’m in full agreement with what you said (thumbs up)

  18. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

I knew long ago the ‘second choice’ question would be high on the SMSM agenda.

    Glad he handled it well.

It irks me no end that we put management and players up to speak to these people – they’ll either twist the words to suit or just make it up.

  19. Leave Bankier alone ,if there has to be critical comments on here they should be blamed on 2 Coaches,Neil Lennon and John Kennedy, the pair of them couldn’t motivate the players, simple as that,It all kicked of with Lennon throwing a few players under the bus,One big mistake Peter Lawell did was to keep Lennon on as first team coach,He should have sacked him last October in not doing that he put himself of being shown the door.

  20. How you handle the media is only one aspect of being a manager, albeit a very important one. I was very impressed by Ange today, who comes across as a really smart, confident guy. Unfortunately, the same could not be said about Bankier who looked like his arse was making donuts. Give Ange the support a Celtic manager deserves and I think he’ll do well.

  21. Go tell the Spartim on

Do you think they’ll ask the 2nd choice question at the Crystal Palace, Everton and Spurs pressers, if we’re not gonna ban the buggers can we at least turn the cameras on them, get them to provide their name and who they work for

  22. A nice wee ditty doing the rounds, not sure if 100% accurate but quick check on Wiki shows some details correct.

His grandfather Jim O’Murray fought the British in the streets of Dublin during the Easter Rising of 1916. After the leaders were captured he stowed away on a ship leaving Dublin docks on the evening of the 30th April 1916. Not knowing where the ship was destined, he arrived in Greece 17 days later, settling in the capital city Athens where he married Dorothea Agathangelos. They had a boy James (Dimitris) and a daughter Cassia who went on to marry Dimi Postecoglou who’s only son, Ange, became a professional footballer in Australia after the family moved there. Ange now manages Glasgow Celtic FC.

  24. Was impressed by both Ange and Dom in the presser. He slapped down the “step up” question well. Don’t remember Stevie G being asked the same thing from Liverpool under 18 coach to SEVCO manager, despite not having his pro licence which is why Gary McAllister was there.

Cool story, bro. But maybe not quite as good as this one.

    “Made me proud…

Frank Sinatra sang there, Jim Watt fought there and Eric Liddell, the “Chariots of Fire” Olympian, trained there. Sadly, no one knows the name of the two servicemen who knocked on the Ibrox door one wartime evening and asked if they could see inside. Bill Struth obliged and as they walked the edge of the pitch, the visitors asked if they take a pinch of grass as a souvenir. “We won’t see much of this where we going,” they added.

Even the strict disciplinarian Struth was moved. “Take some, but make sure you bring it back one day”.

    The two never returned.

And after the war, Struth made his own enquiries about the young servicemen. He found out they were Canadians who were in the first wave of Allies to land on D-Day in the face of fierce German fire. As they tucked the sprig of green in their uniform breast pockets, they probably already knew they’d never see Ibrox again.”
