Celtic Park developments and what is needed next

443

I was at the Allianz Arena when we visited on Champions League duty this season.  There are many reasons to like the Munich stadium (although navigating back to the bus was not one of them), but stadium lights were like nothing I had ever seen.

Not only do they illuminate the Arena to a near-daylight level, they can instantly flash on and off, creating a spectacular pre-match lightshow.  Tools like this improve stadium atmosphere as well as providing a more striking event for TV viewers.  Celtic Park will be transformed when we install these lights this summer.

A new hybrid pitch (part grass, part plastic) will provide the very best surface available anywhere in the world.  It will be durable and bowling green-smooth.

Money will also be spent on the roof, which is the Achilles heel of the stadium.  The design is prone to leaks and makes it difficult for public address and wifi systems to effectively reach spectators.  A seven figure sum will be spent on the roof, but we need to realise a fundamental rethink is required.

As international tournaments reached Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine and now Russia, closing roofs were installed at stadiums.  This increases attendance, game-experience, time inside the stadium and makes the game attractive to new attendees, who would never consider sitting in an exposed wind 147 steps in the air.

This technology has never been more affordable and is the norm from Kazakhstan to Cardiff.  It needs to come to Celtic Park.  I suspect those who sit in the South Stand do not have a full grasp on the match day experience of those in the upper sections of the rest of the stadium.

  1. As a bhoy I used to look up at the main stand from either the jungle or the celtic end and marvel at the size of it, and how cool and better it was than the edwardian lavvies.

The “bin lid” looked like something very ahead of its time. But quickly met with structural problems and a dispute with the architechts.

I have no memory of the old stand other than being in the front door sometime to pick up tickets.

Now if we can take away all that metal grid from the roof, refurbish the seating area. Bring back the orange seats for the bottom tier, add white ones for the middle tier, and have green translucent roof i think that will look wonderful.

I have to agree with you,old bean.

Stevie Clarke needs shooting, even if only for the number of commas he has induced from both of us.

  3. Would a goal still stand if one of Ntcham’s free kicks deflects off the roof and into the net?

  4. Imo Steve Clarke hasn’t got the necessary charisma to manage us.

A Celtic manager needs both, substance and charisma.

The new lighting system is being compared to that at some wonderful stadia,no question.

But also little wonder that one of the teams with state-of-the-art lighting is

    PSV Eindhoven!

Of course,Sevco have their own “in” to modern day state of the art stadium design.

    Scaffolding,in their case…

  10. Felt sorry for the posters who missed out on May 9th, ’98, even though they had tickets. I didn’t, but took a chance, and got one at 2:58 as I spotted someone pull 2 books out of his pocket and head for the turnstiles alone. His mate was a no-show, and he handed me the book. Got to the top of the steps next to the partially-built Jock Stein stand just as Henrik scored. A day just as Lou Reed described.

Aw,shucks. I’m sure you missed out the resident pedantic basturt from your list there!

Btw,my loathed iPhone seems to have reset. Amongst other things,it tried to change basturt to nasturtium. Not kidding either.

  12. On the subject of barnets, did anyone else notice that Stretch didn’t look his usual impeccable self last night – no doubt his hair is not so fine if the weather is wet and inclement. Affects his game, in my humble. ?

  13. I’m not sure I’m keen on a stadium that is always lit up like daylight when it is dark. That’s fine pre-and post match but I think the internal stadium lighting should be dimmed as much they can be within safety limits. My abiding memory of big European nights (e.g., Benfica, St. Etienne, Ujpest Dozsa, etc. etc.) was the old pylon floodlights flooding the pitch with light whilst the surrounding darkness was a massive wall of sound.

Back on the subject of a retractable roof, we should have massive murals of the greats of Celtic past looking down on the current heroes to inspire them and terrify our opponents. Just how fantastic would that be? I think I might be getting a bit carried away with this now.

That’s too many commas to be measured on the Glasgow scale…

  16. You won’t have tried sitting in the front sections of the South Stand then Paul67.

To bring a retractable roof in would also come at a large cost to Celtic considering South Stand would need to be built up to level of existing newer stands.

Repost on Champions League qualification options from this am …

    Champions League qualification

The likely Czech champions have a slightly better coefficient than Celtic which makes us 5th seeded side in the qualification process and there are now only 4 ties in the final play off round. But as part of the new format for the Champions League, the following affects qualification seeding …

“If the UEFA Champions League holders have qualified for the group stage via their domestic championship, the vacancy will be filled by the champions of the association ranked 11th (Czech Republic), who otherwise compete in the champions path”

Real Madrid have already qualified for the group stages and if they win the CL final, then the Czech champions will automatically enter the group stages, promoting Celtic to 4th top seeds and so seeded in the final Play Off round.

If Liverpool win or at least take a point against Brighton at home on Saturday (goal difference currently +15 over Chelsea) then they qualify for CL group stages next season. If Liverpool then win CL final, Celtic will again be seeded through all qualification rounds.

So let’s hope for a Liverpool result on Saturday at home to Brighton and then it doesn’t matter who wins the CL final- we’ll be seeded in final Play Off round likely with Salzburg, Ludogorets and PSV Eindhoven.

The ever excellent Bert Kassies has it all here ..

    JOCKODEE on 10TH MAY 2018 11:18 AM

embramike says ” Yer team’s deid…Beat it!” – What happens if Liverpool get beat on Saturday and Chelsea win, but win the Big Cup? Are we then unseeded for the final round?

If Liverpool lose at home to Brighton and Chelsea win away to Newcastle, Liverpool drop to 5th and so miss the CL group stages. If then Liverpool were to win the CL final, the EPL would have 5 teams in the group stages as …

“An association may have a maximum of five teams in the group stage”

The Czech team would stay in Play Off round and we would likely end up 5th seeds having to play one of the seeded teams to reach group stage. Possible opponents then likely be Salzburg (EL semi-finalists this season), Ludogorets, PSV Eindhoven or Victoria Plzen.

Let’s hope Liverpool get a result on Sunday !

I’ve got a bottle of STRATHEDEN VINTAGE Whisky unopened, anyone any idea if it’s a rare brand, How can you tell by reading the label on the bottle, the information is it’s from batch 1 bottle number 0749/1000 70 cl,46% volume. come on Mike you must have an idea

  20. Council about to put parking restrictions in place that will result in many celtic fans having to park a mile from the stadium, which combined with piss poor public transform is gonna be a real issue. Thats ok for the able bodied young folk but not good for lots of people going to the game.

    Choice for board is

transform large plot of land behind LL stand into a two level car park for some 1000 cars or so for a few million

    Or

spend 2 million on lights that can be used about 10 times per year

celtic decide to progress the latter which to my mind shows a complete lack of consideration for joe bloggs needs

Ps the south stands a joke as are disabled facilities in terms of amount and quality think that would/ should be priority before a covered pitch.

Doubt that I will see a roof on Celtic park, however if they do would it be open or closed when they do the sleep outs for homeless charities????..

Dont think a multi story car park would work, can you imagine the wait to get out of it after a game??…However I fear that attendance at mid-week games in particular would be compromised severely by the exclusion zone. And anyway isn’t it just moving the problem a mile away before the congestion starts???.

More thought needed here I think..
