Celtic Park developments and what is needed next

443

I was at the Allianz Arena when we visited on Champions League duty this season.  There are many reasons to like the Munich stadium (although navigating back to the bus was not one of them), but stadium lights were like nothing I had ever seen.

Not only do they illuminate the Arena to a near-daylight level, they can instantly flash on and off, creating a spectacular pre-match lightshow.  Tools like this improve stadium atmosphere as well as providing a more striking event for TV viewers.  Celtic Park will be transformed when we install these lights this summer.

A new hybrid pitch (part grass, part plastic) will provide the very best surface available anywhere in the world.  It will be durable and bowling green-smooth.

Money will also be spent on the roof, which is the Achilles heel of the stadium.  The design is prone to leaks and makes it difficult for public address and wifi systems to effectively reach spectators.  A seven figure sum will be spent on the roof, but we need to realise a fundamental rethink is required.

As international tournaments reached Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine and now Russia, closing roofs were installed at stadiums.  This increases attendance, game-experience, time inside the stadium and makes the game attractive to new attendees, who would never consider sitting in an exposed wind 147 steps in the air.

This technology has never been more affordable and is the norm from Kazakhstan to Cardiff.  It needs to come to Celtic Park.  I suspect those who sit in the South Stand do not have a full grasp on the match day experience of those in the upper sections of the rest of the stadium.

Woof woof to yer mutts, hope you and Mrs Big Packy are doing well.

See when you type anything, next to the space bar at the bottom of the keyboard there should be a smiley face – left hand side on my applepad. If you click on it, it should display a load of wee faces and other magical symbols for you to choose from.

  5. MIT,

I remembered you telling me that when you were over…….if the guy had a handsome moustache that would have been the drummer guy, Neil Peart. If he was a blonde adonis, he would have been Alex Lifeson, the guitar picker.

All nice guys, apparently, and extremely talented musicians, but not to everyone’s taste.

Shania Twain was/is married to Mutt Lange, who was producer of some of AC/DC’s best stuff with Bon Scott ?

your correct, a quick search says platini wanted finals played in 70000+ stadiums, but there are not a lot of them.

  8. !!BADA BING! SAINT STIVS, so what about the darkside, surely they cant host anything.hh.

  9. All this talk of upgrading the stadium, parking restrictions, and all the upheaval,it’s going to cost,Me being a Celtic Supporter, and with plenty of money,I would relocate, were there is good travel and parking available, Railway Station, etc, but I would understand fans not wanting to leave Celtic Park, buts it’s just my opinion.

  10. Delaney’s Dunkey glad you enjoyed being a stauner last night. I’m sure you took to it like a duck ….. ?????

The Boardroom and Presidents Box were outstanding but the game was pish.

  11. Big Packy,

sorry, it’s not available when you’re on a laptop / PC………unless some other smart barsteward knows where to find them. There’s maybe something in ‘preferences’ or ‘settings’ you can change to display them.

    will have a look.

  12. another search says stadiums have to be CATEOGRY 4 status , which replaced the ELITE 5 star SYSTEM.

    St. Stivs ….

    some context ….

The Bears were full of English internationals … Aberdeen had the McLeish/Miller axis, …. Hearts had Robertson, and Dundee United had Narey, Kevin Gallacher …

Scotland also qualified for the world cup in 1990, which suggests that the standard of scottish football was higher than at present…..

I dont know the relative costs of the teams back then… but I would hazard a guess that Celtic’s present squad costs more than all the other teams put together (outwith Sevco)…. I cant imagine that was the case back then….

My earlier reference to Tommy Burn’s comment about Celtic representing a people and a cause ….

I would genuinely be interested to know what people think he meant by that…. and do they think that meaning still applies today…

not going to argue, or fall out with anyone over this… but, I find the CQN crowd a pretty decent crowd, and an insteresting (if older) cross-section of fans….

so, was wondering what people think….

Was a pleasure meeting Eddie and your other pals. Added bonus was meeting Jobo again. Loved it, but my son Ryan was feeling lonely in 102, so I returned to my seat at half time to keep my baby company. See you Sunday in Coias. Thanks again, and I hope you and your mucker Father Tom had a good night wi the hoi polloi.

  17. How about Willie Haugey, and Rod Stewart, and other cash strapped Celtic Supporters, put there money in for a new Front Stand,

  18. only my opinion,

Celtic PLC dont represent a people and a cause.

Celtic team on the park do, and that people is the collective celtic support, all of us, inclusive, enmasse, every represented. And that cause is the betterment of our people. and any people that we can help.

  20. i'vehadtochangemyname on

I would like sun screen dispensers at Celtic park – many’s the time I’ve been burnt to a crisp in November watching cellic v hamilton ; for same event , I would also like free bo*”ock warmers ( I’m not sure what these are but somebody must have some, hang floating free bo*”ck warmers that fly out of an underground casino).

  21. MIKE IN TORONTO okay f an b forgive you how is seamus and what i said was tongue in cheek, do you think the sfa is fit for purpose.hh.

    St. Stivs …

didn’t we laugh at the zombies when they tried to draw a distinction between the team and the company?

for me, the team and the PLC are not separate entities, but are different aspects of one entity ….it is like a person’s heart and brain… part of one person, but each having a different function, but neither can exist without the other and without working together ….

for me, at present, the various aspects of Celtic are out of synch with each other …..

  23. Big Packy Cheeko and myself are well

Just knackered trying to get back into work again, tired not physically.

Although I am not helping myself by getting up at 5.25am and going out for a walk before getting ready for work.

I hope you, Joan and F & B are well.

    Hail Hail

  24. Delayney’s Dunky –

A pleasure (re)meeting you too. You looked very happy and contented, and had only dipped slightly by the time we spoke again at half time.

Anyways, off to Mass to ask for guidance on whether to renew or not. “If the Spirit doesn’t move you, what’s the use of making plans” (gerryraffertyCSC)

  25. mike in toronto on

BP … sfa fit for purpose? not even close. But I would also say the same about our Board…. which has gone too long without change/new ideas and needs freshened up.

    Scottish football needs an aggiornamento!

Understand where you are coming from ‘re beers. I went to a Glasgow Warriors game and ditto. The beers were the highlight of the night.

We all know the reason for the alcohol ban, but that was decades ago. Well heeled footie fans can have a drink, but the ordinary punter cannot.

That fact is soooooo wrong on soooooooo many levels.

Anyway with the parking restrictions more supporters will not be driving to the games. If supporters want a beer in a responsible manner, why not?

I personally think he was referring to Celtic Fans,Timdom, The Irish Diaspora, Feniany Peeps, Cultural Catholics, Actual Catholics, Non-Catholics Who Identify As Tims, the cause being the aforementioned peeps and their milieu and daily struggles.

Or……maybe he didn’t have any clear idea of what he meant at all and was just expressing a nebulous, indistinct, wild romantic notion.

Who he didn’t mean is clearer – huns an’ that….
