Celtic Park home advantage made clear

143

A friend who has been to a few American football games told me about a difference in crowd behaviour there, compared to our own game.  Here, a home crowd gets noisy during an attack by their team.  In American football, the home crowd noise peaks when the visiting team have the ball.  Their focus is to disorientate the visiting players in possession.

Think back to the Leipzig game a few weeks ago.  Leipzig are a composed side in possession and very capable of playing out from the back.  In the final seconds of the first half, however, seven Celtic players and 60,000 fans completely disorientated them.  They were unable to think clearly, or act as a team.

Together, we hounded the ball off them.  The noise fuelled Celtic players and destroyed Leipzig’s.  Even after Celtic won the ball back, Greg Taylor was able to point tell Reo Hatate where to put the ball, with no defender able to react.  It was an extraordinary few seconds of play, which perhaps determined the outcome of the game.

With that game fresh in his memory that this week, Alistair Johnston spoke about Champions League nights at Celtic Park.  “When you walk out there and you hear that anthem, the noise that the fans make is almost inhumane. It’s guttural and animalistic in a way, just the scream when the Champions League anthem happens.

“You can see it with the other team, the reactions when they hear it for the first time.

“You can just see what it gives that power to the players, that extra level of sprinting and just everything that they give to the game.”

For 23 years in this competition we have typically been productive at home and ineffective away.  Celtic Park performances truly are a team effort, all 60,011 of us are required.  When Brugge are in possession tomorrow night, let them know why Celtic Park is such a difficult place to visit.

  1. On the CL, should Celtic manage to win by even the thinnest margin tonight, they will find themselves after 5 of their 8 games above PSG, Real Madrid, Man City, AC Milan, Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich and either Juventus or Aston Villa, moving up to at least 13th place. A 3 goal winning margin for Celtic would lift them to at least 11th, and were Dortmund to lose away to Zagreb and Lille fail to win by at least 3 away to Bologna, Celtic could finish the night as high as 9th place!

Alas, any win tonight will do, then we need a solid, safe away performance in Zagreb before hopefully enjoying another Slovan like result at home against bottom club Young Boys. Then who knows, it could be a 90 minute “winner takes all” England v Scotland face off for a place in the top 8.

    H.H.

  4. THELURKINTIM, simplifying the tonight scenario somewhat, the most likely scenario is that a 3+ goal win for Celtic will lift them to 10th in the table. 👍

  10. Just watching some highlights of the CL and Atalanta destroyed Berne away from home, our win against Leipzig was outstanding our draw against Atalanta equally so, need the same tonight, a maximum performance and ruthless finishing.

  11. Must admit to being impressed with the post AGM interviews, and in particular with Peter Lawell especially in the section relating to his involvement with the ECA. And the importance to us, of continued Euro football, financially, and ongoing, in more general terms of economic welfare for the club and as he pointed out, in terms of the UEFA solidarity fund, to Scottish football in a wider sense. Thus far, as hoped by many of us, the new CL format is working well for us, and as both Turkeybhoy and BigChipsUK have pointed out, if we win tonight we could improve our relative league position no end. For example vis a vis Villa and Juve, AC and City, not to mention staying in front of Real, Benfica, PSG and PSV all major clubs by any standard.

A win, another win if you like, would be among the most important victories in Europe over these past twenty three years, and while not over confident, given our home form has shown some improvement, (albeit not always in results) over the last few seasons, I do not think optimism would be misplaced.

    =================

would the results in various champions league group stages under the old format not prove what he said ?

the chamions league then, home and away fixtures against bigger clubs results in record skelpings.

fast forward to today, and PL work with the ECA brings the “league format” and many favourable (winnable) fixtures.

ergo PL tells it as it is.

  14. !!bada bing!!

Which is one of the criticisms I have made in the past re the approach of the club, to multiple player trades as against focus on involvement in European football. Some of us, and this is based on annual turnover over twenty years, believed that as Willy Sutton was wont to say……’that’s where the money is’. Ergo our highest turnovers, under O’Neill, Strachan, Lennon, Rodgers, Postecoglu, and Rodgers again involves relative success in Europe.

Fact is we have (only) qualified for the Group Stage (and now new CL format) 12 seasons out of 24, and have won less than 50% of those home games. Less “productive” than it might have been.

Now, we are in a period of CL football, maybe an interim period who knows, but one which makes for more games, more money, more opportunities, more prestige, than we have enjoyed in the past, UEFA/EL progress notwithstanding. And one which may well suit us.

Peter Lawell has contributed to some of the changes we now see in Euro football, we cannot deny that, and hopefully Celtic will continue to benefit from said changes, and that he will continue to realise the actual importance of European football to Celtic, a position he certainly seemed to stress in that post AGM interview. Winning games helps too of course.

It depends where you read j,some media and sites are making out they are a material loss, some just informing us they are out.

In a way I would like Brendan to focus on our team, our players, our strategy and tactics, all with energy and guile and God willing resulting in a victory for Celtic and a step on in our ambitions, negating whoever stands in front of us tonight.

Will you be watching? I got moved tonight so 105 it is for me on the centre line.Hope you manage a game soon, yir missed :-))

Nobody said CL was “beyond us”.

What was stated was that getting to the CL Group stage when you had 3 pre-qualifying two-legged ties to negotiate, was difficult and could not be guaranteed. Our record in attempting to qualify proved that. The Battered Bunnet showed, ion mathematical terms why, even if you faced 3 teams that were weaker than you, the odds on getting to group get closer to 50:50 or 45:55 as you accumulate them over 6 ties.

And then , when you get to the Group Stage, you have accumulated injuries and suspensions earlier than the teams you face, who already have stronger squads than you and a better competitive environment in their league to prepare them for this. Therefore, qualification out of the Group Stage becomes harder and our record in the competition (and that of other teams from peripheral leagues) proves that.

Now, in this new format, following on from a rare automatic qualification to the Group Stage, which won’t last, we have had a great start, and that is untypical (but not unheard of- we’ve had 3 last 16 CL outings this century). So we’ve had a recent period of earning the CL riches, without troubling the last 16.

And, here’s the nub- we haven’t earned it yet. We can still fall in the bottom 8 yet (tonight’s match could go a long way to determining this). If I was a betting man, I’d say we have a greater than 50% chance of making the play off rounds but we will most likely be drawn against a Big 5 League team with a stronger squad then and will fail to achieve a 4th last 16 outing this century. My heart hopes it will not be so but my head and our record (the science) tells me this is how it is likely to pan out.

Now, some will say it’s because we spent £11m on Engels and £9m on Idah, we are in a different era and we are finally listening to the “Speculate to accumulate” argument. That, with respect, is nonsense. We are able to spend these fees because we have been prudent and have budgeted for failure to qualify for CL riches.

Even if we do make it to the play off round and even if we do win our way to the last 16, it will still be our 4th outing to that stage and not a new breakthrough.

We have not changed our level yet.

We make our money by earning an invitation to the dance, we do not, even this year, make it by winning the dance competition.

Our record in the past decade is 4 visit to the CL Group stages and 6 failures to get there. That’s what PL is referring to. We haven’t able to guarantee being there and getting the riches. And this year’s successes so far does not disprove that, great though it is.

We are merely in the same territory as pointing to a 90 year old man with a 60 a day smoking habit and saying that proves smoking is not fatal.
