Celtic Park Race Night for Oscar

1423

Football can be a primitive sport on occasions but before kick off at Cardiff tonight the Wales and Scotland players will acknowledge the nation’s thoughts for a family in distress. The game provides many of us with opportunities to remember we are members of a complex and caring society. The The Wee Oscar 4 Life team have asked me to invite you to next month’s race night at Celtic Park. This is from them:

Be a hero for Wee Oscar and come along and join us for the WeeOscar4Life Race Night and Auction on 17th November in the Kerrydale Suite at Celtic Park!

Wee Oscar and his family flew to Philadelphia on the 6th October to start Wee Oscar’s potentially lifesaving Immunotherapy treatment, unfortunately due to health complications Wee Oscar was rushed into Intensive Care and it appears that these complications have shattered the prospect of receiving this immunotherapy treatment in Philadelphia. The events from the last few days have strengthened the WeeOscar4Life Campaign’s resolve to ensure maximum support for Wee Oscar and his family throughout Wee Oscar’s treatment. Set-backs such as this mean that it’s now more important than ever to raise additional funds.

The WeeOscar4Life campaign are proud to continue our fundraising for Oscar and his family during his treatment; Lisa Hague, Patron of the campaign, and Partner of Celtic’s Kris Commons says ‘This is the next stage of fundraising which will directly support Oscar and his family throughout the treatment and we implore the Celtic Family to continue supporting this incredibly worthwhile appeal. The Race Night and Auction is going to be a wonderful night and I can’t wait for the fun!”

Tom Boyd, the captain who stopped 10, said, “It will be my pleasure to support the WeeOscar4Life campaign by attending the race night next month. The backing shown by the Celtic Family already has been nothing short of extraordinary, and has inspired many of us to get involved and help this family through such an abysmal time.”

10 WeeOscar4Life Corporate tables, seating 10 people, are available on a first come first served basis offering preferential seating, drinks package, snacks, free entry and company advertising/printed logos. Early booking is advised as advanced reservations mean there is limited availability.

WeeOscar4Life seats are available and can be purchased individually or as groups at £7 per ticket. Again these seats will be sold on a first come first served basis. Snacks will be available on each table. Tables seat 10 people.

On the night there will be 8 races a raffle and an auction.

Race sponsorship is also available at £250 per race.

Jockey and Owner sponsorship is also available at £5 per Jockey or Owner. Each winning Jockey and Owner will receive a prize.

To reserve tickets or request further information please contact the team at here WeeOscar4Life@gmail.com.

  1. Evening.

Firstly, God bless wee Oscar and all those helping him….

Secondly, apologies for the length of post below, I had a free afternoon, feel free to scroll by.

The Welcome Re-emergence of Scott Brown

When Neil Lennon revealed the true extent of Scott Brown’s degenerative hip injury last month and alluded to the treatment programme he follows to manage the condition, it elicited an interesting variety of responses from fans, ex players and commentators. Most echoed the manager’s warm praise for Brown’s determination to continue to perform, while others expressed concern over the routine administration of pain killing injections on his body and the long term consequences he may suffer as a result.

My own reaction, prompted by Neil Lennon’s remarks that Scott requires to be shut down from time to time and can no longer be expected to play every game, was to reconsider his contribution to Celtic over the last few years in light of the challenges and barriers placed before him.

Scott has divided opinion among Celtic fans since Gordon Strachan signed him in 2007. His approval barometer among the faithful has swung violently back and forth, season after season. On one hand he has produced dominant, Gerrard-esque performances, while on the other he has misplaced passes and allowed his energy and exhuberance to drag him out of position, like a Scottish Tommy Grav. Burdened by a hefty price tag, he has inspired, frustrated, excited, disappointed, succeeded and failed as a Celtic player, often in the same game.

Few doubt, that Brown, fit and on his game, is a player of exceptional quality, but until relatively recently he could be legitimately criticised for a lack of consistency. Two years ago a majority of fans would have accepted a decent fee from Tottenham, Inter, Newcastle or any of the other clubs reportedly showing an interest. Instead, Neil Lennon showed why he is on the fast track to managerial greatness by defying popular opinion and offering his captain a contract extension to 2015, a symbolic show of faith which has been richly rewarded with some truly outstanding midfield displays in the last eighteen months. In fact one of the many successes the manager has delivered for the club has been to challenge the scapegoating mentality which was threatening to develop. Scott has been one of the key beneficiaries, along with the likes of Samaras and Kelvin Wilson. The managers patience and faith has helped rehabilitate these players in the eyes of the support and altered many perceptions.

Despite butting heads occasionally in their playing days, there is a clear and mutually beneficial affinity between manager and captain. When Neil discussed the players injury in the aftermath of Moscow, he did so with warmth and admiration, praising his bravery, leadership qualities and ability.

But the hip is still a worry. Roy Keane recalls Sunday’s spent in bed toward the end of his career, unable to walk due to a hip complaint. Hopefully Scott’s injury is less severe and it does not impair him later in life. At 27, his best years should still be ahead of him but the outlook is concerning. Whatever he goes on to do at Celtic, and we will surely be his last club, one glance at his career stats informs us he has already achieved significantly. Successive managers can’t all be wrong. Tony Mowbray built his team around him, John Collins famously described him as vastly superior to his friend and contemporary Kevin Thomson, Gordon Strachan outbid Rangers to sign him and Neil Lennon reveres him. Internationally, McLeish, Smith, Burley and Levein have had him in the team every time he has been fit. He has won trophies and individual honours: two titles, two league cups, one Scottish cup, young player of the year, players player of the year, 30 caps, numerous champions league appearances. We are in Paul McStay territory with Brown, maybe not in ability, but certainly in the lazy perception that a high achieving player in an under achiever.

Scott’s honours have been accrued against the backdrop of serious injury (ankle, hip, broken leg and broken foot), the tragic passing of his young sister and strong competition for places in central midfield. Naka, Robson, Hartley, Gravesen, Donati, Crosas, Jarosik, N’Guemo and Ki have all come and gone in Scott’s time at the club and terrific players like Kayal and Ledley cannot currently dislodge him from the team. His style of play is evolving, though he retains the trademark effervescence, epitomised in sensational displays of controlled aggression against Benfica and Spartak Moscow. Like his gaffer, he used to revel in the Ibrox atmosphere and though those days are thankfully gone, we remember the team crumbling last season when he went off injured having set up goals for Kaddouri and Hooper. Who can forget the curling strike at the Celtic end and the genesis of the Broony?

He seems to understand his primary function on the pitch and performs it diligently. Observe how quickly and regularly he shuttles the ball out to James Forrest. Good players know what their colleagues require and James needs early ball and Brown knows this. He has a neat touch, pace and tackles well. Were he not a footballer you suspect he would be an outstanding 800 or 1500m runner. While he may not have the grace of Xavi or Iniesta they do not possess his skills and the midfield will be intriguing in the Barca double header.

Lastly – and I am sorry to have went on so long but it is an international weekend – his disposition is worthy of comment. He is an exhuberant, fun loving character, (you tube ‘Brown mankini’ or Scuba Steve if you don’t believe me), good for the dressing room and happy to be at Celtic. On signing his extension he dismissed a move to England, stating it was a privilege to play for the club. You get the feeling this boy from Dunfermline has ‘become’ a Celtic fan, in the same way Gordon Strachan did. With 150 appearances for Celtic he is a mainstay in what has the makings of the best Celtic team for a generation and as we embark on what feels like something momentous under Neil Lennon, I hope he stays fit enough to drive the team on. No matter what the next few years holds for Scott Brown I think he will be remembered as a fine Celtic man.

FGF thats a fantastic effort by those school kids, god bless Oscar

  5. Ahh good old Clyde – trying to sell Hooper for us.

We dont need the money and I would very very angry if they sold him

  6. Awe Naw,

Some useful looking young fellas on show.

It’s a pity that the magnificently named Doolin Mc.Closkey O’Toole never made the cut.

He looked like a big, no nonsense centre half, who could put in tackle.

I think I heard a comment that he was a bit one paced.

JK didn’t rate him, though, I think one of the other coaches did.

  7. Snake Plissken on

    Looks like

Are the players who are better than Kris Commons all washing their hair tonight?

Maybe Craig Levein washed his hair and cleared his head:0)))))

  11. Do radio snyde think we need to sell all our players to raise the zillions that chuckles greenbacks scheme will generate

  12. Why aren’t Clyde talking bout The Levein Revolution, starting with the seventh choice midfielder and a striker who told him to GTF!!!

Beats the hell out of me..

  13. Snake Plissken on

IN fairness to Clyde, they didn’t raise it, callers who were listening to Talksport picked up the Hooper to Liverpool story and passed it on.

Dalziel’s glee at the thought was another thing though.

    HT

And neither you should. Those that regularly and unaccurately smear fellow supporters and follow it up with a pitiful apology need to change their tact.

I think that one is a lost cause personally speaking.

The foot is much better. Soon be back into kicking bahooky again territory. Thanks for asking.

Can yoy believe that the tomem tim was giving me a hard time about how pathetic my walking stick was. At least I could walk ;-)

  15. Radio Clyde should get with the programme if and when Celtic ever need money all they need to do is approach middle class supporters like HT – BT and of course wee CT

  16. Good evening friends.

As a rule of thumb I actually detest race nights. However, I’m aiming to make an exception for this one and subject to changing a couple of previously made arrangements Jobo will be there.

As for the more immediate issues, 1 hour till kick off, surely this time, Scotland, please…

    Jobo

  17. Hooper will move on at a time and for a fee that suits Celtic with a suitable replacement having been put in place.

I have to say it is a tough business.

I remember doing cartwheels when we signed Graveson and being depressed when Liam Miller left.

He was always catching the players a bit late ….Maybe thats why.

Anyway what do I know but I enjoyed the program and the idea.

  19. DUSHANBE BHILLY BHOY on

Nothing captured the spirit of the Irish fans who travelled to this summer’s European Championships better than the Irish Tricolour with the words “Angela Merkel thinks we’re at work” written on it.

A joke conceived by seven former University of Limerick students, they had no idea that the flag would become such an iconic symbol both home and abroad of the Irish willingness to party despite the fiscal straitjacket imposed by outside forces, most notably the Germans.

The flag even made the front page of Bild, Germany’s biggest and most influential newspaper, which is essential reading for the German Chancellor who has seen the funny side of it.

Appropriately enough, given tonight’s opposition, the flag will be in the Aviva Stadium for the World Cup qualifier against Germany.

After returning from Poland, the former students auctioned the it through 2fm’s The Tubridy Show.

It was bought by Oonagh McInerney, a Kerry woman who owns a company in Barcelona, and by her brother-in-law Martin Digby. Their winning bid was €15,800. In addition, Dublin nightclub Copper Face Jacks pitched in €5,000 from its losing bid.

The money was divided equally between Crumlin children’s hospital and the Oscar Knox Appeal, set up to aid the Northern Irish four-year-old who has a rare form of cancer that needs specialist treatment abroad. It was agreed to hand the flag over to Oscar, but his family gave it back to its original owners to continue fundraising.

The six former students – the seventh is abroad – will be guests of the FAI at the match tonight and hope to ensure that the flag gets a prominent position for those German viewers who might have missed it the first time.

The flag particularly caught the eye of the German ambassador, Dr Eckhardt Lübkemeier, who invited them to the embassy twice, most recently last week for the German national holiday celebrations.

It has been to John B Keane’s pub in Listowel, which is Ms McInerney’s hometown. It will travel to Barcelona at the end of the year and Australia next year. A further €5,000 has been raised since it was auctioned.

“When we go to pubs, people give us cash,” said Richie Touhy, one of the seven. “I still don’t believe it has happened the way it has happened. It’s surreal.”

The flag and its entourage went to Belfast last night for a gala ball to raise funds for Oscar’s treatment. By coincidence Oscar started treatment in Philadelphia this week, but it did not go as well as expected. It was discovered that that he had a heart condition and could not undergo the immunology treatment that he needs.

A spokeswoman for the family said they had not giving up hope of him receiving the necessary treatment elsewhere in the world. One of the alternative options is in Germany. “There is still hope that he will find the immunotherapy treatment elsewhere,” she said.

Despite being one of the perennial superpowers of world football, tonight’s match is a sell-out, with the Germans taking up their allocation of 4,000 tickets.

  20. Right – so Green is convinced that Zombie FC will be playing in a European Super League in the not too distant future?!

    Of course they will.

But before this happens they could maybe attempt to join the proposed Balkan Regional League which could be up and running by 2015, with trips to Belgrade, Sarajevo, Zagreb and Maribor(!!)!

OK- they are not based in the Balkans but they could always buy a club who IS based there and relocate! Once the share flotation is complete they will have millions at their disposal.

Green is completely and utterly barking mad!

    HH!!
