Celtic passing, the horseshoe shape and Spanish movement

247

I watched the first half of Spain-England last night and although the Spanish will regard it as a horror show, that verdict should be limited to how they defended.  The home team’s movement off the ball was a joy to watch.

Every modern dominant team, including Celtic, seem to play what is commonly referred to as a passing game.  When Celtic play it, it looks like a passing game, but when Spain played last night, passing was subservient to their movement.  When a player received the ball, everyone else in a red shirt was on the move, giving him straightforward options.  No one was boxed-in, forced to try to beat a man or lob a rash ball forward.  Successful passing became a consequence of off the ball movement.

By comparison, Celtic stretch play from left to right, in a regular horseshoe patter, presumably in an attempt to create space between defenders.  A direct cost of this is that players have fewer options in possession, make more predictable passes and are forced to play it sideways or back more often.

England shredded Spain, which could be linked to the fluidity of the Spanish, but I suspect it had more to do with a failure to keep a straight defensive line, than a direct punishment for off the ball work.

    Good wee read, thanks.

As it was, his spell at Old Trafford ended with a hard-fought FA Cup quarter-final draw at Middlesbrough, the previous year’s UEFA Cup runners-up, which offered evidence of the intelligence and unselfishness Ferguson so valued.

“Henrik went back to play in midfield and ran his balls off,” Ferguson wrote. “On his return to the dressing room, all the players stood up and applauded him and the staff joined in. It takes some player to make that impact in two months.”

  3. DBHOY- Henrik is the fittest player I ever seen in the Hoops, he could close down a back 4 on his own.

  4. Aberdeen are on another collision course with the SPFL amid claims they have sabotaged the sell-out chances of the Betfred Cup semi-final.

Furious league bosses have written to the Dons to voice anger at a ticket-selling strategy that could see up to 10,000 Rangers fans miss out on the October 28 clash.

The SPFL instructed the Pittodrie club to sell tickets for the east stand at Hampden block by block, allowing unsold tickets to be returned to Rangers.

But Aberdeen have sided with their Red Army and refused to sell seats with the worst sight lines in the National Stadium to their most loyal supporters

It’s understood the Dons have sold around 10,000 tickets from their allocation of 20,300 and decided to offer fans the best views from the middle section of each block.

Now swathes of seats could go unsold, with segregation impossible, costing the four semi-finalists a cut of an additional six-figure sum.

Aberdeen declined to comment but a Pittodrie insider said: “No club worth its salt would consider selling the worst tickets to those who stepped up to buy them first. It makes no business sense and is not a fair way to treat our supporters.
