Celtic passing, the horseshoe shape and Spanish movement

247

I watched the first half of Spain-England last night and although the Spanish will regard it as a horror show, that verdict should be limited to how they defended.  The home team’s movement off the ball was a joy to watch.

Every modern dominant team, including Celtic, seem to play what is commonly referred to as a passing game.  When Celtic play it, it looks like a passing game, but when Spain played last night, passing was subservient to their movement.  When a player received the ball, everyone else in a red shirt was on the move, giving him straightforward options.  No one was boxed-in, forced to try to beat a man or lob a rash ball forward.  Successful passing became a consequence of off the ball movement.

By comparison, Celtic stretch play from left to right, in a regular horseshoe patter, presumably in an attempt to create space between defenders.  A direct cost of this is that players have fewer options in possession, make more predictable passes and are forced to play it sideways or back more often.

England shredded Spain, which could be linked to the fluidity of the Spanish, but I suspect it had more to do with a failure to keep a straight defensive line, than a direct punishment for off the ball work.

  3. Celtic legend Davie Hay has taken aim at the blundering Scottish football bosses and claimed the scheduling of the Betfred League Cup semi-finals is “absolute farce”.

The Hoops were originally scheduled to play Hearts at Hampden on the evening of Sunday, October 28, with Aberdeen taking on Sevco Rangers earlier in the day at the same venue.

However, after an amazing U-turn, Brendan Rodgers’ holders, who have won the trophy twice during his reign, have been ordered to play their Edinburgh rivals at Murrayfield.

Former manager and player Hay, now a club ambassador, said: “It does not take much to invite criticism towards the SPFL, but the carry-on over the League Cup semi-finals was an absolute farce.

“Where was the organisation? The forward-planning?

“It did not take a genius to work out that if both Celtic and Rangers progressed to the Europa League then there was an obvious clash for the semi-final dates.

“To that end, I just don’t think there would have been any issue if they had said prior to the draw that the first tie out of the hat would be played at Murrayfield and the second at Hampden. It could have been as straightforward as that.

“It is then transparent, there is a clear plan and everyone knows what is what from the get-to.

“Instead, what we had was a bowing to public opinion and the whole thing looks like a shambles.”

Hay added: “Hearts and Aberdeen both had a point. They were right to voice it and the first decision to play both games at Hampden was always a stupid one.

“Celtic were within their rights to be upset at the change and how it came about, too.

“It’s not about going through to Murrayfield, but simply the manner in which the decision was made.

“They will need to get on with it, but you can see why an entire lack of organisation has led to the chaos and discord that we have seen.”

    34,000 steps? Blinking flip,at an average of 0.8m per step,that’s about 27km,or 17 miles.

You should have got yourself sponsored for a distance like that!

There used to be a theory that New Yorkers travelled more on the vertical than the horizontal. Dunno if it’s still true.

    Almore,

I noticed the other day that you were asking for comments on the LLS from London.

I watched it and, overall, wasn’t too impressed.

First of all, I thought the concept of trying for an intimate atmosphere in a large auditorium was wrong.

Apart from Norton, Finbar Fury, Imelda May and, perhaps, Brendan O’ Carroll, the guests weren’t suitably interesting.

We all know Barry Mc.Guigan and Big Mick’s stories and the “heavy” Brexit segment was riseable.

To give Farage air time made it almost into an edition of BBC’s Question Time.
