Celtic pathway to international football

101

When Mika Baur signed last month none of us expected him to be a prime source of goals, but his two goals in the last +6 hours action are the only occasions Celtic have scored in that period.  That form has probably only reinforced the impression Germany manager Jurgen Klopp had of the player from his time in Bundesliga 2 last season.  Mika is in the squad for the game against Serbia in Munich on Thursday.

Winning his first senior cap would be a huge achievement for a player who only turned 22 over the summer.  It would also be a critical endorsement of Celtic.  Attracting talented young footballers is a difficult task.  We can tempt them with the prospect of Champions League football, but that might not be as convincing an argument as it once was.  ‘Celtic players are on the Germany manager’s radar’ is a solid endorsement.

The word ‘pathway’ is used to describe the way a club promotes young players to the first team.  The pathway to the national team, be it Germany, or Columbia, for whom Camilo Duran made his first appearance on the bench on Saturday, is just as important to a player in his 20s.

I was also thinking that Nygren playing there, in that formation, would be worth a look.

However, it means probably playing without wingers and that won’t happen.

    Thanks – that’s incredible.

While the Board deserve credit for our domestic record, if Rangers had won say even 4 more of the leagues that involved either direct qualification for the CL or those that then involved qualification and had actually qualified then ( ignoring their apparent ability to squander cash) they might well be on an equal financial footing with us.

I know that’s hugely all hypothetical and there are innumerable factors in play at any one time but it is still horrifying, possibly because they now seem much closer to us , on and off the field (Transfermarkt now view their squad as more valuable than ours) than they have for a long time.

You’re describing exactly what happened in our last game and it didnt work. Sweden did play with a winger last night and managed to make it work.

Potter might have his limitations as a manager but he has always been known for chaining his formations a lot from game to game. Without watching the game it’s a guess but you’d imagine that it wouldnt be a strict 4-4-2 in and out of possession.

Whatever his shortcomings he’s done a brilliant job with Sweden and a lot of it is his ability to get the best out of a bunch of players who were underperforming before he took over. He gets his best players on the pitch and works out a formation that works for them

Not sure where you get 4 more leagues from – they’ve been nowhere near beating us in the league four more times.

Transfermarkt valuations are, supposedly made up by one guy in each territory. The rumour is that the valuations are done in Scotland by a Hun.

I think you need to calm down a bit with the talk of it being horrifying. We’re miles ahead of them financially.

Try not to get too worried, theyre having their moment domestically, but they’re even worse at qualifying for Europe than we are.

GTP isnt to be relied upon because of its tendency to “hallucinate” and fill in gaps it finds with what it thinks you want to hear but that was a really basic question, you;d expect it to be able to cope

If you’re interested in the shortcomings of Chat GTP you should listen to Armando Ianucci talking about what he did to it on his latest podcast.

The 4 figure was, like the rest of it , hypothetical.

I agree we are – and certainly should be – miles ahead financially.

How quickly it might change is my concern but I’ll let it lie at that!

From what you’ve said about Potter, I’d say we need someone like that.

    Mmmm.

  12. Had Brendan Rodgers managed to conjure up a way past FC Kairat last season and Martin & Co had figured out how to game manage a Celtic team 4-0 on aggregate ahead in Linz we would have “qualified” for the CL 5 seasons in a row. Then again I am one of those on here who is aware enough to realise that it was winning the SPL 5 times in a row that earned us those opportunities. Other interpretations are available……

  13. VALE BHOY on 29TH SEPTEMBER 2026 3:43 PM

I wouldnt mind him, he did well in a couple of jobs where developing players was key but I dont think Potter would cope with being Celtic manager, he doesnt seem to have the right personality for it.

He’ll have some decent offers after what he’s done with Sweden

The scale of Manchester City’s financial cheating laid bare in independent commission report: the club overstated sponsorship income by more than £830 million over eight years.

  19. Here’s Souness’s take on City:

“The legacy is gone. If it goes the wrong way for them they’ll be consigned to history that they were cheats and whatever they did, whatever they won in that period, should not count,” Souness told Track Radio.

“There’s an argument for Liverpool to have a couple of Premier Leagues given to them.

“For them [City] to be stripped of whatever they’ve won in that period of time, for them… money’s not an issue.

“So whatever fine is just like a scratch in the surface. Relegation [as an option]… I don’t know.

“But I come back to it. I think this is going to open a can of worms, which I think may go well beyond the realms of football.”

  21. The independent Commission found that Manchester City arranged ‘sham’ commercial deals with a number of its sponsors during the period, which were part of a disguised funding scheme, whereby those companies were only required to pay a portion of the relevant sponsorship fees. The remainder was funded by Abu Dhabi United Group Investment & Development Ltd (ADUG), which owned the club. As part of the scheme, further ‘sham’ arrangements, funded by ADUG, were entered into to enable the club to record lower operating expenses than it actually incurred, as well as a ‘sham’ circular arrangement with Fordham, an entity that purchased the club’s players’ image rights, that was funded by ADUG.

The purpose of these schemes was found to have been to artificially inflate the club’s revenues, and reduce its costs, by more than £900 million during the affected period, to appear to comply with financial rules. The consequence of this, as the Commission found, was that the club filed misstated accounts and concealed the true state of its finances from its auditors and football regulators. The Commission concluded that ‘by its conduct the club clearly intended to circumvent the PL Rules‘.

As a result, Manchester City failed to accurately report its income and expenditure for the purposes of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules and UEFA’s Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Rules. The Commission found that, had all of the relevant agreements been reported accurately in the club’s accounts, it would have been in breach of both the League’s and UEFA’s spending limits by a very substantial amount.

  23. Under Premier League instruction, Murray Rosen KC selected three people to form the independent commission that heard the charges, with one member of the panel required to be a financial expert. The hearings were conducted privately. When the verdict is published, either side can go to an appeals panel and, after this, arbitration. If all fails, either could attempt to find an argument to take to the high court. Under the rules of association of the Premier League there is no opportunity for either party to go to the court of arbitration for sport (Cas) in Switzerland.

    What could the punishment be?

According to rule W.51 in the Premier League handbook, a commission has the ability to levy a wide range of sanctions against any club found to have broken the rules. These include fines, the docking of points and suspension, or even expulsion, from the competition. In fact, subclause W.51.7 states that the commission can “impose upon the respondent any combination of the foregoing or such other penalty as it shall think fit”. That even leaves open the possibility of City being stripped of their titles.

    What have City said?

The club have been bullish from the start. They “welcomed the review” and the opportunity to “impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position”. On Friday, as reports of the verdict came through, a spokesperson said: “The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality. As such Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023. The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis that the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”

Haven’t we been here with Uefa?

In 2020 Uefa suspended City from the Champions League for two years for “overstating its sponsorship revenue in its accounts” between 2012 and 2016, part of the same period covered by the Premier League’s charges. However, that sanction was overturned on appeal by Cas. In its ruling Cas found that a number of the claims brought by Uefa had fallen outside a five-year “time bar” which prevented historical charges. But the tribunal also argued that one key charge over payments relating to sponsorship by Etihad Airlines was “not established”. The panel said Uefa had submitted insufficient evidence and that, if its case had been correct, then City employees who had given testimony to Cas would have had to have been lying.

  28. The CAS ruling on the UEFA charges was very dodgy.

City can’t go to CAS this time, and the investigation and ruling has been done by two lawyers and an accountant, they took a long time to get it right.

City seem to be going after the three of them rather than the ruling which says a lot. They’re unlikely to be able to get to the appeal panel but they’ll go after them as well probably.
