Celtic player luxury not afforded to Maribor

678

While Ronny Deila rested 10 players ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League play-off decider, Maribor changed only four players for their 3-0 win over Zavrc, who were three points ahead of them on the Slovenian league.  Wednesday’s goalscorer, Bohar, was replaced midway through the second half, while Tavares came on for the last 10 minutes.

Whatever regrets Ronny has over yesterday’s defeat he’ll get over it when he sees a dressing-room full of players who have rested and trained appropriately all week.

  5. Tom McLaughlin,

I, for one, agree with you as regards John Park. He made his reputation at Hibs. Too too many current supporters seem to think they could run Celtic better than those who have the responsibility at the moment. Doubt it very much myself.

I reckon it’s across the board in most of europe, and has been for some time.

The brit way is dying out, thankfully.

Clubs like us can’t afford to bring in a new batch every time they sack a manager, or the manager leaves, hence they are going down the route of bringing in players via the scouting dept, and the coach, coaches them, simple when you think about it.

The club have all but said this is the route they have embarked on, the policy of finding prospects, coaching them and selling for profit is what we are doing, the coaches job is to coach them, not find them.

I am delighted we are going down this avenue, also delighted we are trying out before we buy as well.

One thing I feel is that Celtic have far to many players on there payroll I think it must be around 60 at the moment.I feel we have to have a good clear out (a syrup of figs moment). Many who will never hold down a first team place should be told to find new clubs and of course it would be a costly exercise but so is paying them every month. We then should be much more selective in who we sign and maybe saying that we wont go above a certain number of players say 35. H.H.

If I were DD I would have had the same point of view on last season

    League – fine

    Cups – woeful

Europe – good start qualifying for CL but group performances poor

Yes we had lost good players but if Lenny was unhappy with the standard of replacements he should have spoken up -instead last summer he was dismissing LG as not worthy of his team yet he was brought in in January -did he not really want him?

  20. Rock Tree Bhoy on

Reading thru the blog over the last day or so, it would appear that no one is expecting anything other than a win on Tuesday night. That’s unusual. Normally there’s differences of opinion re the outcome of our games in Europe, particularly one as important as this. But on here, and I’m not being critical merely making an observation, Maribor’s chances have been written off. My own opinion is its too close to call, its half time, nothing in it at 1 – 1, could go either way, clearly Maribor will be just as determined to get to the CL as we are.

Sincerely hope the blog’s confidence is well placed.

Speak out publicy, can’t see that happening.

Maybes that is why he left, who knows.

It’s the manager-coach thing, Lenny would have said who he wanted, he would have been told who he could get within a budget, and he would have taken who he was given.

Just ask yourself why a lot of the players brought in weren’t given any game time, maybes cos they were given to the coach and they weren’t good enough.

As I said, I believe 100% this is what is happening, problem is at our level, we have a lot of failures.

Rock Tree Bhoy. Tuesdays game is far from a fore gone conclusion we are very capable of losing an early goal and nerves setting in.Also the longer the game stays at 0-0 the more nerves the team and the supporters will have I feel we need an early goal to settle us down.H.H.
