Celtic looked nervy during the opening exchanges in their Champions League clash with Lazio last night, as Lazio imposed a high press. A 12th minute turn and drive inside from Daizen Maeda changed things.
Daizen found Matt O’Riley who played a truly great one-touch pass behind the defence into the box. This is Kyogo Territory and the Japanese’ movement bought him enough time to drill a shot that deceived the keeper and opened the scoring.
That shocked Lazio into a response as Celtic endured a high and fast press this grouo of defenders have never collectively faced. Celtic struggled to progress the ball forward, with the usually effective Reo Hatate’s distribution well below par.
Lazio forced a couple of corners before their equaliser arrived. They had two distinct strategies for each side for the field, with attackers clustered inside the six yard box for inswingers from the left, and lined up behind each other for outswingers from the left.
The latter caused enough confusion to lead to the equaiser. With numerical advantage inside the box, the defence should have prevailed.
If Lazio had the better of the opening period, Celtic dominated the second half. Just after the hour, Luis Palma and Cameron Carter-Vickers replaced Yang and Nat Phillips. Both arrivals injected control and drive into Celtic.
With 8 minutes remaining, the whole of Celtic Park (apart from the guy sitting beside me) thought Palma had put Celtic ahead, but VAR ruled a touch from Maeda was enough to disallow the goal for offside.
Lazio were winding down the clock in added time but a moment off balance from Carter-Vickers allowed them to drive into the box. As with their first goal, the defence will think they should have marked better.
A game which could have been won and should at the very least have seen Celtic take a point was lost. There is a softness about us which needs worked on.
I think the game came too soon for us. You can see shoots of potential in Palma and the authority Carter-Vickers brought to the game was enough to turn the tide of play. His late split does not touch the sides of support he has in the bank from Celtic fans.
It’s a tough ask now to finish third in the group.

I’m just sick of the sight of all of these players Tav, Goldson, Barasic, Lundstram, Roofe, Wright that we’ve had to endure and suffer failure for years, as for the new ones Dessers, Lammers, Cifuentes I’m sick of the sight of all of them already , I wish they would all just fudge off as far as humanly possible.

I am wondering if we can just cancel the rest of the season. Refuse to field a team.save fans having to watch this pish and give new manager time to assemble and work with a squad.
We are that bad.

I’ve seen lots of embarrassing Rangers defeats but see when they barely have their own self respect and can’t even try..,,
An utterly useless shower.
New manager must be given free reign to torch the squad.

Cifuentes, how much did this dud cost us as well? I’m lost tonight how we improve.

What has happened to us?!
When you think of the swash-buckling way we ended last season and the foundations being laid for this one.
The excitement at the opening of the transfer window, getting shot of the deadwood and a complete team rebuild.
The anticipation at going into the CL qualifiers, proudly returning to the European stage, and raking in the financial rewards.
The expectation of a great showing on the domestic front, the prospect of puting the tramps in their place, and the realistic prospect of puting silverware in the cabinet.
Fast-forward a couple of months and we’re manager-less, tearing our hair out, watching a team of hopeless incompetents who can’t even undertake the footballing basics, horsed out of the Champions League, humbled tonight, by a low ranking team from a footballing back-water, trailing in the league, by 7 points after only 7 games, little room for optimism or the prospect of significant improvement anytime soon, ad nauseum.
Not all of us got carried away with the mega-hype over Michael Beale’s ‘revolution’, but I doubt a single one of us saw this one coming.

I did. I called the day they beat us at ibrox. All they have is their own hype. The biggest problem is that they manage to convince themselves that they are world beaters off the back of 12 years of failure. Groundhog day.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2023-24*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #10 – CELTIC 1 LAZIO 2 (KYOGO)*
Good evening, friends.
Celtic, Europe and Rollercoasters – things that always go together!
Not sure I’m in the majority but I actually enjoyed the whole occasion last night (apart from the final minute, obviously!). The pre-match atmosphere was electric, and we started the game very well with our players all being brave on the ball. The odd stray passes were made but the players involved never hid and were always ready for the next one.
A really well worked goal saw us take a deserved lead but some very sloppy defending from a corner saw Lazio bundle the ball over the line. Perhaps Joe could have done better. Half time 1-1 and still feeling pretty positive as I marked the occasion with the purchase of a steak and gravy pie!
Into the 2nd half and we continued to have the majority of the possession, loads of good interchanges but maybe not as many clear chances as we‘d have liked. And with 10 minutes remaining Palma gets the ball in the net and the place goes wild. When ‘goal check’ went up on the screen I had no idea what the issue was but later learned that Maeda’s slightest of touches on the ball led to Palma being offside. But our Bhoys continued to press and there was only one team looking to win. So, when the board went up with 6 added minutes, I took that as good news. With hindsight, if it had only showed 5 or less, we’d have left with a point! And we all know what happened with 40 seconds to go and this time I lay no blame at Big Joe.
A final personal observation on the 6 added minutes. It’s all very well after the game talking about game management and about making sure we didn’t lose. However, during that extra period whenever our back 4 had the ball the vast majority of the crowd were bellowing at the players to get it forward and go for the winner. In my own opinion, going for the win was the right approach albeit that it failed. As the guy who swallowed his glass eye once said, “hindsight is a wonderful thing.”
We have now played 10 games, winning 6, drawing 1 and losing 3 with 17 goals scored and 9 conceded.
A huge thank you to the 67 who voted this week. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.
Hart: 5
Johnston: 5
Phillips: 2
Scales*: 57
Taylor*: 3

Hatate: 0
O’Riley: 55
Maeda: 25
Kyogo: 13

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Lazio are –
Scales – 5 points
O’Riley – 4 points

Kyogo – 1 point
The overall positions after 10 games played are –

You did the same to me a few weeks back. Bit of a pattern emerging here.
Maybe lay off calling people Huns, as you’re starting to come across a bit paranoid.
Or, is that a Hunnish thing to say as well!?

“the vast majority of the crowd were bellowing at the players to get it forward and go for the winner.”
Players at that level need to be disciplined enough not to allow our fans jeers/growls get to them. 99% of fans don’t understand the complexities of professional football. How could they? Spontaneity gets the better of football fans. Paying handsomely for the privilege, that’s their perogative.

No offence, but I don’t recollect. I don’t doubt a genuine reason for your grevience so I’ll humbly offer an apology and graciously accept your advice.

So if paying for the privilege is what it is about then maybe they are better being called consumers than supporters. Supporters aim to add to the effort and align with the team to deliver an even better result / performance. Consumers pay to air their views regardless of their effect on the team performance or result.
I totally understand the evolution taking place at Celtic. We are kidding ourselves if we talk of being great supporters vs others though.

I thought that the atmosphere last night was the most subdued that I can recall for a CL match at CP .
The young lassie sing ,but her rendition of YNWA was not at the same tempo as the crowd are used to and therefore the singing from the crowd was out of sync ,mumbled and lacking passion .
Tens minutes into the game I commented to my mate that it was a poor atmosphere.
There was an apprehension in the crowd ( GB excluded) and a nervousness in the air .
There wasn’t the usual roar of support for Celtic after we conceded.
I did it twice and was aware that I was standing roaring and clapping my hands on my lonesome .
What I will say is that beside me there wasn’t any fans loudly deriding individual players or the team .
There were sizeable groans in the first half when Scales gave possession away for the 4th time, but he also received a rapturous roar for a crunching tackle ,and widespread applause for calmly breaking up an attack and keeping possession .
I also head someone comment to his friend (me) that there are times that I think Maeda is brain dead.
For me ,most of the crowd was waiting on the cock up and sucker pinch .
The team didn’t disappoint on that score .
Not having won a home CL match in 10 years is the problem .
Under no circumstances do I believe that the Celtic support are to blame for CCV and Johnson being out of position for the late gut wrenching goal loss .
That being said the team performed better than I thought they would .
Gutted but proud of their efforts .
We should maybe be looking at the lack of support most our signings have provided over the last 3 transfer windows ,then blaming our wonderful supporters .
TT
Good morning all from a very dary, wet underfoot and chilly Garngad.

Good morning all from Govanhill.
I watched the Huns game last night and the result fairly cheered me up after Wednesday night.
A VERY AVERAGE ARIS LIMASSOL really showed the Huns up for what they are. It coulda/shoulda been more than 2 – 1.
Kevin Thomsons VOICE SHOULD see him employed as a Funeral Director ( Funny that the word FUNeral has the word FUN in it ). Is Kevin Thomson overseeing the Second DEATH of the Hun…
LOL.
Ive already placed Bets on St Mirren to GUB the Huns earlier in the week BEFORE they got beat last night.
I may place a few MORE Quid on St Mirren for Sunday, having watched the Hun DROSS last night.
MAGIC.
