Celtic looked nervy during the opening exchanges in their Champions League clash with Lazio last night, as Lazio imposed a high press. A 12th minute turn and drive inside from Daizen Maeda changed things.
Daizen found Matt O’Riley who played a truly great one-touch pass behind the defence into the box. This is Kyogo Territory and the Japanese’ movement bought him enough time to drill a shot that deceived the keeper and opened the scoring.
That shocked Lazio into a response as Celtic endured a high and fast press this grouo of defenders have never collectively faced. Celtic struggled to progress the ball forward, with the usually effective Reo Hatate’s distribution well below par.
Lazio forced a couple of corners before their equaliser arrived. They had two distinct strategies for each side for the field, with attackers clustered inside the six yard box for inswingers from the left, and lined up behind each other for outswingers from the left.
The latter caused enough confusion to lead to the equaiser. With numerical advantage inside the box, the defence should have prevailed.
If Lazio had the better of the opening period, Celtic dominated the second half. Just after the hour, Luis Palma and Cameron Carter-Vickers replaced Yang and Nat Phillips. Both arrivals injected control and drive into Celtic.
With 8 minutes remaining, the whole of Celtic Park (apart from the guy sitting beside me) thought Palma had put Celtic ahead, but VAR ruled a touch from Maeda was enough to disallow the goal for offside.
Lazio were winding down the clock in added time but a moment off balance from Carter-Vickers allowed them to drive into the box. As with their first goal, the defence will think they should have marked better.
A game which could have been won and should at the very least have seen Celtic take a point was lost. There is a softness about us which needs worked on.
I think the game came too soon for us. You can see shoots of potential in Palma and the authority Carter-Vickers brought to the game was enough to turn the tide of play. His late split does not touch the sides of support he has in the bank from Celtic fans.
It’s a tough ask now to finish third in the group.

I’m with you on the points you made.
One further on the wee singer pre game. I’d guess over 90% of the crowd were male, but she sang YNWA in a key males can’t sing in and practically only dogs can hear.
Celtic shouldn’t mess again with YNWA.

I respect your Celtic watching experience historically and mine may have been different.
I also respect your view of the officials is usually different to mine.
I thought the chap last night was appalling tbh. Inconsistent and very easily influenced by our opponents.
Have you confused me with someone else?
I have not at any time posted a comment about the performance of the Celtic v Lazio referee.

I more or less agree with what you have said. The girl singer had a decent voice but the Celtic Park crowd singing YNWA is more than `decenet`. Much more.
We have this fantastic event at Celtic Park on CL nights and someone decides to change it? Why?
I didn`t even sing as I thought we would be doing the `real` version just before KO.
Very disappointing.
A very windy game of golf beckons so
Cheerio for now.
G’day everyone from a steadily drying out Melbourne.
Took me while to log in again, guess it’s only me as no one
else bothered to let me know otherwise about log in issues.
Suppose like every other supporter I would just love to be
celebrating European success, but I’ve accepted our place
in the moneyball soccer chain now.
It won’t change in my lifetime, or what I’ve got left, but I’m
lucky enough to have lived through when every team had
a fair chance, and we the famous Lisbon Lions took it.
On to Kilmasonic now, crush them and I’ll be as happy as I
would be at beating Lazio the other night.
Sad, I know, but it’s where I am, for the immediate future.

Football without fans is nothing.
A poorer match day experience results in a poorer atmosphere.
I felt that was the case on Wednesday night.
There were a number of issues on that contributed to a lesser match day experience.
A poster previously mentioned the physical size of the turnstiles. I had not thought of this before but yes this is a factor. Supporters are physically bigger than yesteryear and our weather dictates the wearing of coats and jackets.
Large slow queues in wet weather is so yesterday. I personally witnessed numerous ticket hiccups. Why not create more turnstile facilities to alleviate this undesirable scenario.
Toilet facilities in 2023 without hot water and towels is not acceptable, especially for a family oriented club.
Wi- Fi access is from the Ark.
Catering is extortionate and why still contactless only ?
Put bluntly; Our pricing does not reflect facilities.
Celtic constantly promote the legendary atmosphere, but are they short changing faithful supporters. ?
We have discussed the transport management and infrastructure around the stadium for many years on here.
Frankly it is not fit for purpose.
On a wet windy works night with an 8 o’clock ko more supporters understandably travel by car.
Subsequent gridlock. The roads cannot cope.
The only logical answer is to allow buses, mobility cars and taxis only. This will come and has it been factored by a wider forum?
The match going supporters must be the number 1 priority and too often this does not seem to be the case. A TV audience is vital, but it must not be our priority and to the detriment of attending supporters.
There are many initiatives to enhance the matchday experience. Who has the vision that Dominic Mckay had ?
Football without fans is nothing.
HH, the journey continues.

Hope you are both well, Paddy still planning events for

Looking forward to another 3 points at the weekend.

I contacted JP Taylor just before and after the COVID-19 lockdwn concerning the issue of no hot water and no towels in the toilets. The answer was that the stadium was not designed to have hot water in the public toilet area’s. The second reply was that the Board would look at the problem, that was two years ago.The bottom line is they don’t care and not having hot water must be a Health and Safety issue I am surprised that they are allowed to operate under these conditions.

I always take time to read your posts and find them thoughtful and informative.
However I am surprised you mention Dominic Mckay – I’m unaware of any positive contribution he made during his very short stay – perhaps you know something that I don’t. HH
The birthday Bhoy?
Celtic wiki sys 6 Oct 1922, but the statue plaque says 5 October. Sorry!

Regarding the young lady singing YNWA hence killing the atmosphere..
I remember years ago when we played Nottingham Forest ,Celtic had a guy on the pitch singing, can’t remember his name ,he was rubbish and killed the atmosphere .We also lost that night 😩
I hope whoever organises the pre match stuff takes note of the comments on YNWA . It’s one of the highlights of CL nights (sometimes the only highlight ) -)))))))
Cloud 9,
When Dominic Mckay was ” headhunted” he was to bring the same advances as he brought to Scottish Rugby.. He presented his ambition to modernise Celtic. He started 3 months early because the need was so urgent and crucial.
Michael Nickleson replaced Mckay and promised to continue with his vision. He stated ” evolutionary initiatives will soon be implemented ”
Hollow words it seems because if we cannot provide basic hot water in the toilets then where is our hygiene protocol never mind vision.
Anyone who has ever attended a Glasgow Warriers game will see some initiatives in action from pub affiliation and ” deals” to a great match day experience. Imo, the only downside is the actual product on the park.
I think Celtic have attempted modernisation so I’m not just having a go. However I feel the fans are not getting ” Bang for their buck ”
Even if we used the 6% interest on our >£70m in the bank we would notice a big difference.
I remember the initiative for SPT subsidised travel that Fergus gave for ST holders. Such initiatives are there for negotiation if the will permits.
How visionary was that:: environmentally friendly and practical.
Cheers and HH.
HH.
The new article will be up at noon.
STPATRICKSBHOY on 6TH OCTOBER 2023 9:22 AM
Indeed and unbelievable. All the emphasis on washing hands throughly to prevent the spread of germs seems to have washed over Celtic’s hierarchy.
How can Celtic ever criticise supporters when they don’t provide them with basic hygiene facilities .
Thanks for your reply.
HH.
I was delighted to get a couple of tickets for the Celtic vs St Johnstone game a few weeks back via these pages and did not want to criticise anything, incuding the game itself.
But I concur regarding the facilities inside the stadium, no hot water is ridiculous. When we get H&S inspections here in Spain it is an automatic fine of 1000s of euros if the hot water is not working.
I don’t know if we were unlucky with the actual seats too. The one I had was being held together with zip ties and moved considerably when you sat down on it. I am guessing it has not been replaced since the last time the Govan mob were there and broke 100s of seats.
Not nit picking by the way, these are important issues from a fans experience at a 21st century sporting event.
Greenpinata
I agree with much of what you say.
One I would add is the assholes who try to get in with out a ticket really don’t help.
We witnessed 2 such clowns on Wednesday delaying access for hundreds. We also saw 2 get in creating further shit as folk were then in wrong seats. Not normally too bad a problem but it was on Wednesday as loads of ‘part time’ fans were present.
Hard to blame the club for these selfish types
Maybe pre stadium ticket checks might help this.
Hot water and towels Betty ….. and keep them comin
