Reo Hatate endured a torrid start to the month but what a return to form he enjoyed last night. In earlier seasons, Reo’s energy levels dipped late in games, but against Young Boys he covered every blade of grass. After Daizen Maeda’s dismissal, it was Reo who marshalled the left wing, throwing himself at the ball to squeeze the life out of the Swiss attack.
Space and time on the ball is a premium at this level, but players with elite ability can manufacture both. Reo’s first touch, combined with intelligent use of his body, allowed him to repeatedly settle Celtic into possession.
He did this deliciously with five minutes remaining, before carving open the Young Boys defence with a pass into the path of Adam Idah for the goal. The goal itself was a lucky break, but you often make your luck. Reo made ours last night, without his skill, the Young Boys defence would have not have been stressed.
You will wait 20 years before seeing another hattrick of disallowed goals (I have a vague memory of Tommy Johnson being incorrectly penalised like this against Kilmarnock). Kyogo’s three goals were all correctly disallowed, but seemed an indication that the opener would soon come.
Greg Taylor’s cardio capacity almost came to the rescue, when he hit the byline inside the box and crossed, while being dragged to the ground by the neck. Arne Engels’ attempt from the penalty spot was poor. If you stagger your run as Arne did, you are in trouble if the keeper is not already on his way down. The resultant shot had no momentum from the run-up, allowing the keeper time to read it.
Keller in the Young Boys goal had an outstanding game, although there was a ‘saveable’ element to each of his seven shots stopped. His final act of heroism, getting a foot out to stop Adam Idah, became a short pass to the onrushing defender Benito, who could do nothing but bundle the ball into his own net. The cheers at Celtic Park were loud, matched only by the sound of television channels being changed in unison across large parts of the country.
Unlike the first, the second half lacked chances (we will come onto this in a moment). Maeda came close early in the period, while Kasper Schmeichel made a tremendous double save to stop Young Boys taking the lead.
The late goal should have seen Celtic close the game out comfortably. Instead, Maeda’s temperament led him to retaliate. The red card which followed will cost us one of our truly Champions League-class players in Birmingham next week.
Young Boys halted Celtic’s relentless first half procession at the start of the second period when they figured out they needed to deny Callum McGregor space. Callum was imperious in the first half. The key to Celtic’s play is finding angles to make simple forward passed into. Callum was able to make and (more importantly) receive these passes, which repeatedly triggered an attack.
Modern football increasingly resembles a chess board. Everyone who can receive a pass is covered, to progress the ball, you need motion and an understanding of how to create an angle where the recipient can move into to receive a pass.
Celtic did this terribly at Ibrox this month and were vastly better last night. Remember also how often Taylor and Johnston passed the ball along the line into empty space, knowing it would be met by a Celtic jersey. Our success as a football team is all about how we move the ball forward. I don’t think we are the finished article, but you can see what the coaches have been working on since 3 January.
Young Boys remain rooted to the bottom of the table and are ninth in the Swiss league but still managed to give us a proper game last night. This demonstrates the gap between most of our domestic opponents and even the Swiss league. It is difficult to live week-to-week in one environment and then step up to a vastly higher level.
We will have at least 10 Champions League games this season and five against Newco; each match a genuine test. Other games are of little developmental value.
An interesting aside: five clubs are currently on 12 points, each of them a past winner: Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Juventus, Celtic.
Congratulations to Celtic on progressing to the next stage.

On AJ getting zero on Jobo’s
I’m seeing a pattern – I love the guy and think he’s a UNIT but he seems off the boil recently.
Only me?
I hope to god the jota transfer is happening and have no doubt he will offer real quality in the wide areas of the pitch. He was our best attacking player when he left for money beyond his wildest dreams to play in the desert. He was not fancied in a league where your name is more important than your ability. Still played about 16 games and scored a few. Young guys make mistakes and learn, it’s the learning that counts. Did he learn? Well judging by his move to France it would appear he did, it tell you he wanted to play, despite the riches on offer in the desert. That tell you he still has the hunger to play.
He picked an average/ poor team in france and unfortunately for him in that environment muscle is more important than technique and ability. Not a great situation to be in for the boy. Did he learn, well he appears to have decided playing football is better than sitting on a bench and collecting a wage.
Celtic is prefect fit for players like jota because we have most the the ball, attack regularly with the ball and let’s be real the quality of opponents in the spl is not compatible to those in France. If anything I could see jota improving second time round with Rodgers helping to develop his game.
If we actually sign kt and play him and jota down the left hand side that will take some stopping, as would kt and diazan to be fair. Diazan could play centre forward but think we should still be looking to bring in another quality forward if kayogo goes.
Interesting few days ahead and got to say I am kinda digging this transfer strategy whereby we sign quality players to improve the squad rather than the scattergun approached where we sign 100s of under 22 year olds in the hope one or two turns out to be good.
Good Morning Celts – Hope All Stay Safe With The Storm Baring Down On Them!?
Well, we’ve had time to reflect on our Wednesday night efforts and securing a place in the play-off rounds.
Not that the good fholk at Celtic Park have had that time.
The timeline and result of the game sparked off a flurry of activity in the transfer market.
Anyone think a coach took Kyogo to one side and said – you want your transfer this window wee man? We need to beat YB’s!
Then telt him the Jinky, Red Star story…
…now, you know what to do son – Kyogo almost did it as well…
Anyways, as the speculation mounts about his replacement – Meada’s name has obviously been added to the mix.
How about this one…
Nic Kuhn, he was regarded as forward that can play anywhere aling the front line, and for me a definite #10
Earlier this month, talking about the YB game, I commented on the most important game for a generation and the UCL glass ceiling.
It doesn’t feel quite like that, but for me it is.
People have criticised us for “dropping” points against Brugge and Zargreb, yet winning those games would have put us into the top eight, better than many of the elite in Europe.
So, the team and coaches were tasked to take us to the next level and that’s what they have achieved.
Well done all…
It seems a new chapter is opening now, the Executive and Principal shareholder seem to believe we can compete at this level and maybe, just maybe, they are prepared to invest to make that happen.
TEXASTIM @ 1:24 AM,
Agreed, it has been a gruelling schedule and players are feeling it.
It would do no harm seeing Tony Ralston get a run of SPL games.
Like McCowan either starting for, or coming in for Calmac too – Nic Kuhn didn’t seem totally fit either…
So maybe some fringe players a newbies making the February starting eleven.
Like to see Dane Murray and Kenny get some game time, maybe later in the season.
Hail Hail
Hail Hail
Another early start – try to get in and out before the storm bites!

So many interesting points and yes it would be good to see the young players, Murray & Kenny, as you say, getting a chance – maybe they will against Raith.
However my own feeling is that Brendan will always choose his strongest squad until the prizes are won. The stakes are now sky-high and any missteps due to ‘tinkering’ will be firmly laid at the manager’s door – he will not want that!!! HH

DARWIN @ 6:01 AM,
Yes, it tends to be Brendan Rodgers’ way to put out the best side available for the game.
The caveat to that is what we have seen in January, where we chopped and changed, mainly like for like of course, yet it meant our first choices were available for the Young Boys game.
BR&CO have a dilemma though, it was highlighted in Paul67’s lead.
We are playing on two levels – Ross County at Celtic Park and Atalanta in Bergamo.
With the squad now tailored to give us the best chance in Europe, that is a small group.
Asking them to do the heavy lifting through the ten games in four and a half wintery weeks was a struggle.
If we are bringing in the players with the quality of a KT or a Jota, with the salaries that takes and rewarding our top performers with lucrative new contracts, it stands to reason that that group will remain small.
In order to get a bigger squad with players able to excel at SPL level outside said group, we need to have development players and fringe players take a lot of that burden.
Ralston, McCowan, hopefully Taylor – the experienced members of that group, shoring up the team like James has done for our forward line.
Kenny, Murray, Cummings, Turley etc coming through – only eighteen short months ago Scales was expected to be sold as an Aberdeen left back.
He got his opportunity seized it, and is a UCL and International player now.
We have people at the Club that know how to do this.
My sincere hope is that by being thirteen points ahead in the league, winning our first trophy and getting through to the next stage of the Champions League, we have given ourselves enough wiggle room to give these other players opportunities.
Hail Hail
Good morning all. Bit windy oot there.
Mornin.
Stay safe fellow Celts .

Did somebody say an OG winner would be nice ?
……………..
I CONFESS…It was ME who Posted that possible scenario yesterday BEFORE the Manure v Huns game.
After Celtic won due to the Own Goal on Wednesday to sicken the watching Huns, I suggested that it would be really funny IF the Huns were beaten by Manure via a HUN OWN GOAL, being the Winning Goal for Manure.
For a while last night, it looked as though BUTLANDS OWN Goal might be the Goal that settled the game ?
For a while last night watching the Manure v Huns and Butlands OWN GOAL being the ONLY Goal…….I was beginning to wish that I had managed to Place a Bet with the Bookies on that scenario !
LOL.
Manure Reserves – 2 v Huns – 1….so feckin funny all the same.
As for McCoist commentating on any game ? ………He is SO BUSY saying everything at least TWICE…..He talks over the MAIN Commentator every time…
What a Hun CHUMP TWAT he is. He should be SACKED by every TV Company.
I miss wee KYOGO already, it will NOT be easy to replace him !

This was my POST Yesterday at 9.33am….Just in case none believes me….

It would so FUNNY if Man Utd beat the Huns tonight by the ” ODD GOAL”, with the Winning Goal being an OWN GOAL from some sad Hun player……
Couple that scenario with Celtics winning Goal last night being an ” Own Goal”…….the Hun support would be jumpin oot of their windaes ?
LOL
The Psychology Behind Online Trolling and Its Real-World Implications
In today’s world, online trolling is a problem that many people encounter. This kind of harmful behavior is seen on different websites and can cause real problems for those targeted. Research has shown that certain negative personality traits are more common in trolls, including a need for attention, manipulative behavior, lack of empathy, and enjoyment in causing others pain. These traits can be more extreme because trolls can hide behind fake names, making them less likely to face the consequences they would in real life.
Understanding Online Trolling
To understand why some people engage in online trolling, it’s necessary to look at their psychological traits. Studies show that individuals who enjoy causing trouble on the internet often have characteristics associated with sadism, psychopathy, and narcissism. These traits are linked to deriving pleasure from upsetting others, which is a form of antisocial behavior. The anonymity of the internet can make trolls feel more confident to misbehave, making the problem worse for everyone involved in online spaces.

More good stuff summed by your “wriggle room” phrase. We need to engineer some way that lets us play and be successful on the two levels you highlight. However although the quality of the Atalantas etc demands that we match it with quality of our own, our elite squad if you like, the SPFL is a tough ask for youngsters with little experience. How do they get the experience, of course they need to play? That begs other questions.
Some esteemed posters on here would use the cup competitions as a proving ground to give a chance and experience to those yet to step up – this sounds on the face of it sensible. However there could be downsides – supposing we play the ‘second-string’ in cup games and they go out in the early rounds? We would have lost the chance of a trophy with the fringe players getting only one, or, two games – would that be worth it? What about the support? Will they swallow the club opting out of winning honours for development reasons? Usually the situation would be that if we don’t ‘hoover-up’ then Ibrox will. I predict a riot on all blogs and in parts of the stadium if that turned out to be the case. We have already seen on these pages and other blogs those voicing strong criticism of the club and manager recently, even though we are in a brilliant position in all competitions and richer than ever off the field.
It is a conundrum and I concede that at present we are very successfully making it up as we go along. I don’t know if we have the capacity to have a cup team and a title/CL team within the overall squad – but maybe the ‘wriggle-room’ theory could work if the fringe is good enough. HH

Good morning at the end of a good week football wise.
I got back to Celtic Park on Wednesday for the second time in 3 months. What a night to get back.
Random comments:
Farewell and forever fond memories of Kyogo. One of our best in recent years. I’m not knocking Brendan but just commenting that Ange’s style suited Kyogo better giving him more chances to run into open spaces. Ironically, Wednesday night had a lot of good passes (I won’t use the term long-balls) that suited him and Daizen also. A bit more awareness of offside could have led to more goals.
If it happens, welcome back Jota. He has the touch required for Europe.
When asked, Kate Forbes said in radio Scotland that sports events tomorrow may be affected by the storm today. The government will have to evaluate the conditions. We can only wait and see.
need for attention, manipulative behaviour, lack of empathy, and enjoyment in causing others pain.

Plenty of trouble in Manchester again last night, inside and outside stadium, and city centre……..you won’t see much in the rags about it though
Can’t really get on the bandwagon for ex players who choose to leave us.

Internet Slang: Where Did The Word Troll Come From?
October 21, 2013 Thomas Van Random Philosophy 16
If you’ve ever been called a troll or been told to stop trolling you may have wondered not only what that meant, but if you’re like me, where it originated from.
A troll or troller in internet slang is someone that starts arguments or upsets people by posting off-topic or extraneous messages in some type of online community. Their goal is to cause people to get emotional and to harass people online.
an old one on tamsellic…

New research shows trolls don’t just enjoy hurting others, they also feel good about themselves
Published: September 16, 2020 6.17am BST
What is trolling?
In scientific literature, internet trolling is defined as a malicious online behaviour, characterised by aggressive and deliberate provocation of others. “Trolls” seek to provoke, upset and harm others via inflammatory messages and posts.
What the study found
Results showed that gender, psychopathy, and sadism were all significant independent predictors of malevolent trolling. That is, if you are male, have high psychopathy, or high sadism, you are more likely to troll.
The most powerful predictor of trolling was sadism. The more someone enjoys hurting others, the more likely it is they will troll.
So, how can we use this information?
Unfortunately, the psychological profile of an internet troll means you will not get far appealing to their sense of humanity. And don’t just brush off the troll as someone who has low self-worth. Their character is far more complex, which makes managing the behaviour all the more challenging.
Previous research has found showing the troll they have upset you may only reinforce their behaviour.
It appears the popular refrain is correct: don’t feed the trolls and give them the hurt or angry response they are looking for.
This does not mean we should just ignore this behaviour. People who commit this type of cyber abuse should still be held accountable for their actions.
I propose we change the narrative. Trolls are not to be feared — their power lies in the reactions they cause.
The new Socceroos coach, Tonyb Popovic doesn’t miss Daniel Arzani’s application and attitude in this article:
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01-24/socceroos-coach-tony-popovic-hits-out-at-daniel-arzani/104854486
“I had him (Arzani) in camp in October, he knows what I think of him. It wasn’t good enough. His level was really poor in training. Maybe for him it’s OK but it’s not enough,” Popovic said.
I said something similar when we signed him (and the same with Tilio); nice flicks and tricks but not much in consistent end product. Shame he got injured but I guess being a Celt or an Aussie international requires a different level of application. I trust Jota still has that hunger and verve we enjoyed so much in his first spell here. Fingys crossed.
It appears the popular refrain is correct: don’t feed the trolls and give them the hurt or angry response they are looking for.
If we don’t have a replacement already sorted for kyogo does that not give any club the chance to push up the price knowing we need someone in ……

If you think he’s unlucky then think of those on the flight from Stansted to Edinburgh this morning. It actually got to Edinburgh but couldn’t land and according to flight plan is rerouted to…..Cologne 🙄
