Celtic punish County for stretching play late on

87

Everything about Celtic in Dingwall yesterday betrayed the fact they suffered a demoralising reversal on Tuesday night.   The confidence visible in Perth 8 days earlier was replaced by hesitancy and misstep.  Ross County did not make it easy for them; the home side packed their defensive lines tightly, Celtic would need to earn any breakthrough.

It was no surprise that the first goal we conceded of the league season was a penalty kick.  Liam Scales arm extended and was struck by the ball as he faced a cross into the box.  Kasper Schmeichel was correctly disciplined for moving off his line when saving the first effort, he was unable to do anything about the retake.

Despite having 80% of the ball in the first half, at the break, Celtic were a goal down and had yet to force a save from the Ross County keeper.  Fortunately, Celtic had plenty reinforcements available.  Brendan Rodgers introduced Paulo Bernardo, Luke McCowan and Kyogo for Engels, Hatate and Idah on the hour, but his key decision came seven minutes later, when James Forrest replaced Daizen Maeda instead of Nicolas Kuhn.

Daizen’s potency is his pace but unlike the vast open spaces available to both sides in Dortmund, there was simply no space available for him in Dingwall.  All four substitutes had a hand in the goals which turned the game around.

Callum McGregor’s deflected shot onto the thigh of Alistair Johnston on 76 minutes was the break Celtic needed.  County may well have held on for a point had they not ventured so far up field late in the game. A momentary lapse in discipline proved costly.

This late 1-2 win at Ross County didn’t have the vibe of the same result there three years ago, when Anthony Ralston’s 98th minute header kept us within touching distance at the top of the table.  However, just as with that result, yesterday’s win is likely to be crucial come the end of the season.

  1. As far as the article is concerned- straightforward analysis of the game. I’m sure you could refer to our manager as Brendan.

  2. A great 3 points after a below par performance, this fortnight break would have been worse if we dropped anything

  3. A hat-tip to Luke McCowan who took maximum credit from his half hour on the pitch yesterday.

  4. DAVID66…

I hope that you and Mrs DAVID66 have a great holiday in Tenerife….and the weather is great also.

We can have a catch up and Beers when you return.

All the best to you and the family.

    HH Mate.

  5. TURKEYBHOY @ 8:31 AM,

Absolutely, Engels will be in a completely different environment, we will see the bhoy develop through the seasons.

Yes, the subs like at Falkirk at home made the difference, interestingly different subs…

A few would have a shout for POTM, Jamsie did great but I’m going for a few 90 Min + ghuys who did very well in the light of Germany.

Lots of work during the international break for BR&Co – Good to hear DD is right behind their project – it’s the only way we’ll be successful.

    Hail Hail

  6. BJ – Thanks sir and will defo catch up when back.

Young Luke McCowan done himself proud yesterday, I thought he upped the tempo of our game when he came on. He needs more game time, but will have to be patient.

B78 and other comments on Referee- Clancy manages our game plans perfectly as in stop start not letting our game flow, he actually fecked up yesterday thinking he would stop our forward move when Luke was running forward and caught RC out he pulled it back for a very soft foul on Luke, thankfully Cal mac kept move going forward instantly.

    D. :)

  7. After a thrilling performance we have another International break.

There are just too many. Why dont they play 3 games in a break Wed-Sat-Wed. That way we could reduce the number of breaks.

What sort of team will we have at Sligo? Remember injuries to Carter- Vickers and Taylor as well as Full and Under21 are called up for Internationals. Mostly a B team I would expect

    AN TEARMANN,

Just reading killing Thatcher (Rorry Carrol)

    Good read so far

A great read, well researched and evidenced.

  9. Good observation regards Jamesie coming on Mr67. Talking to the TV at the time I shouted “don’t take Kuhn off”. Glad BR didn’t. Jamesie was very direct when he came on and offered a lot more threat than Daizen had been able to muster all game. No mention for our match winner Kuhn though? He was outstanding again.

  10. Tiny Tim,

Give it a rest. Its a big move from the Bundesliga to the SPL,massive football culture shock,in many ways. Also personal changes to your life.Learning about your teamates, tactics etc.

    Luke also had to move.

From Scotland to,eh,Scotland !!!!.Being a fanatic, and having played against them,he would know as much as Brendan would about the players he was joining.

  11. lets all do the huddle on

maeda got in a few really good positions in front of goal and missed a couple of proper chances.

the header for one, and also the corner that came all the way over to him at the back and went through his legs.

i like the fact he gets into those positions.

  12. Huddle,

Yes he gets into the positions, but his decision making let’s him down too many times. His cut back success ratio must be about 90\10.He is an enigma. Can be brilliant, can be poor.Usually a mix in one game.

  13. Mrs TB back tonight.I done great.Kept to the same 3 areas.All others,out of bounds.Cleaning up a dawdle.

Uni was not wasted on me.😇😇

i think half the problem with his cut backs and crosses is because he plays on the left side so when he gets to the bye line he is crossing with his weaker foot.

there are very few players who can cross a ball, take a corner, control a ball etc with their weaker foot with anywhere near as much accuracy as their good foot

McCowan looks a more accomplished player than Engels at this stage.

Engels is 21, in a new country , way of life and a vastly different opponent

(Cluggers and bus parkers) from what he’s used to .

MacCowan 26 , born and bred in Scotland already used to the way of life and is hardened to the league (players) setups .

I agree Engels hasnt been great in the last few games , given time and Brendans influence I’m sure he’ll shine bright .

When’s the windae open again ?😊

  16. For only the second time I picked the same top 3 as Jobo!

Sure feels good to be gangster.

MARSPAPA is correct, just home from working away for a few days. Not a huge F1 fan by any means but do watch occasionally on the rare exception there is a contest going on,

Walking around the strip in Vegas (strangely I actually had fun as I was not excited about going back) the work to take the city over got he Grand Prix is proper mental. So many lanes closed in the 12 weeks leading up to he race and then 12 weeks after to return to normal. Locals don’t like it, Lyft and Taxi drivers etc have to cope with big delays, detours and so on.

The amount of money involved to shut the city down is ridiculous.

As a fine crooner once said, money doesn’t talk it swears.

Ps I have no idea how people can lose $1,000’s when there. I lost $5 and was ready to blow the place up.

Pls If you are reading this at the FBI, that was a joke!

    HH all.

  19. ps on arne.

    5 starts, 445 minutes, 2 goals, 3 assists. 85% pass accuracy.

i hope we kept the recepit

  20. Watching our ,once again woeful set pieces,on Sunday, got me thinking back to Aston Villa. They have the”Angus Og” guy there whos job is set pieces. Now,if a manager as good as Villa have, thinks this is necessary, surely we should be looking at some form of it.Which brings me onto another topic,in a similar vein.

Does anyone else have a clue what that whole dugout houses on matchdays.I am not convinced BR has the best back up there.Look at the difference Thelin has made at Aberdeen.Fulham,Bournemouth,Brentford bringing in good foreign coaches has transformed them. There has to be a few good,up and coming, foreign coaches who would relish the chance to assist BR,bring in new ideas.Maresca got the Chelsea gig, doing great, after Man City.

I am starting to think John Kennedys time is up,and while at it,clear out the youth coaches.Something is off,and if you don’t try, will stay off.The game is changing,we don’t seem to be.Maybe the reasons for some of our european results.Only so much BR can do.
