Celtic Rebuild Continues With Hart Acquisition

AFTER losing out on the Premiership to their near rivals at Ibrox for the first time in 10 years last term, it was clear that major changes needed to be made at Celtic Park. Ange Postecoglou has been under pressure to make significant alterations to his squad and the Australian has opted to bring some highly experienced players to improve the spine of the team. It was recently announced that Joe Hart is now a Hoops player and he may be able to slot straight into the starting XI.

Could Hart Revive his Career at Celtic?

Hart has escaped a sinking ship at Tottenham Hotspur, where there has been turmoil ever since Jose Mourinho was sacked towards the end of the 2020-21 season. After establishing themselves as a regular Champions League side under Mauricio Pochettino, the Lilywhites have been in decline for the best part of two seasons and it is now doubtful as to whether they’ll be able to secure a top-six finish next term. Indeed, those betting on sites like Space Casino will find that the North London club aren’t even favourites to do so and can be backed at odds of 23/20.

It wasn’t as if Hart was really challenging for a starting berth at Spurs, who have one of the best keepers in the league already with Hugo Lloris. The former England number one realised this and, rather than while out the rest of his days on the bench at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, decided to seek a move to a place where he may be afforded more minutes.

There was once a time when Hart was considered the best goalkeeper in England. He enjoyed great success at Manchester City, making 266 appearances and winning two Premier League titles in 2011-12 and 2013-14. However, his more traditional style of play didn’t suit Pep Guardiola’s tactics and Hart’s star has fallen dramatically in the last few years. Glasgow could be the place for the 34-year-old to make a comeback.

Still a Good Age for a Goalkeeper

Hart hit the big time in his career at a young age and was already a regular starter for City when he was 21. However, his career hasn’t quite had the same longevity as is expected from people who play between the sticks. Ever since his ousting from the Etihad, Hart suffered a complete loss of form and no manager in the Premier League has been able to put their faith in him.

The thing is, though, that as goalkeepers go, Hart is still at a good age and should be able to fulfil the three-year contract he has signed with the Bhoys. Many players in his position continue until they are around 40, so there is a chance that Hart can earn a new lease of life in Glasgow. There is no doubt that his winning mentality will be a great boost for the rest of the team.

Despite Hart’s incredible career, his acquisition does represent a slight gamble for Celtic. If the former City man can regain his confidence, he will be a powerful asset. But if he continues in the same vein as he has at his last few clubs, Hart won’t bring much to the table.
