Celtic scintillate. The Red Sea flows by Govan

358

Part of me would like to believe that Celtic destroyed Ferencvaros with a multi-cultural display of slick football as a consequence of the hostile reception they received for an expression of support for racial equality before kick-off.    But that’s not true.  The home supporters deserved no more than to see their team bettered and beaten, Celtic would have been as fabulous no matter.

An early goal followed by an early concession gave the expectation that anything could happen.  Liel Abada’s returned to the first team after a few weeks rest did him the power of good, he snatched onto a poor defensive touch, squaring for Kyogo.  What followed took me back 20 years….. it’s been that long since we’ve had someone with such composure.

Joe Hart could do nothing about the deflected equaliser but when he smothered a shot midway through the first half, he sprung to his feet to release a break.  David Turnbull got the faintest of touches for what would prove to be another assist as the ball found its way to Joto on the left.  The Portuguese drew four defenders before firing a shot that clipped one on its way into the net off a post.

Celtic were on fire now and spurned several chances to stretch their lead, the best when Kyogo controlled an inch-perfect Turnbull pass before dinking the goalkeeper, only to be denied by a goal line clearance.  When the third came, it was another poster moment for great football.  Turnbull won the ball for McGregor to find Kyogo, who played a pass into the box, between defenders.  Abada did not break his stride as he found the corner of the goal.

A late consolation brought Ferencvaros within striking distance of Celtic but the visitors managed the game to the final whistle without concern.  The Europa League knockout rounds are still a possibility but it will almost certainly be the Conference League, which Celtic are now assured of.

Newco accounts for the year to 30 June 2021 are out.  I’ll do a more in-depth look later, a few headlines:

Comprehensive loss for the year was £26.024m, elsewhere you will mainly see the lower operating loss figure quoted, not that £24.153m is low.

For Financial Fair Play purposes, Uefa permit this loss to be adjusted due to the unique circumstances we have lived through.  A quick ready reckoner of this:

While other revenue streams and costs remain consistent with the previous campaigns, gate receipts are down £17.46m (no fans spending money at games) and operating costs are down £8.8m (no fans to serve or steward at games).  Subtract the former from the latter and Uefa will forgive £8.6m of the comprehensive loss, reducing the Financial Fair Play loss to £17.42m or thereabouts.

Football has returned to largely normal operations this year, so that £17.42m figure is a good proxy for Newco’s forward comprehensive loss.  For a business that has never earned more than £59m in its history, the lambeg drums must be ringing the alarm!  There’s so much red ink at Ibrox you’d mistake the Clyde for the Red Sea.

  1. There is an opportunity for any shareholder to send questions to the Board about issues in the game and Celtic’s approach to them prior to the AGM, the email address is on the club website , I have my questions acknowledged and hopefully will recieve answers, one of which was the absence of FFP in Scotland and what is club doing to hold governing bodies to account if clubs are trading while insolvent. Might be a peashooter against a tank but if it concerns you ask the question.

  2. Corkcelt,

Agree, the blog has been very enjoyable.

We know there is much work to be done and we are nowhere near the finished article, But how refreshing to see every single player give 100%.

Granted the light is failing where I am, but I had to read your comment twice. ” The absence of FFP in Scotland ”

Was about to say , you’re joking but it’s FFP and not what we used to see scrolled on walls .😆

  5. SFTB,

Boli’s the better player. That makes him the ideal back-up ‘if’ the Japanese guy is true. Baffling how he’s been treated.

Fully appreciate how Taylor has given Ange everything but just a poorer player but I guess as back-up, arguably a lesser risk.

Their directors have guaranteed the cash flows, it appears there’s no end of business men willing to throw money away…

There really isn’t, there’s a couple of them on the board and that’s it.

They have guaranteed the cashflows because there’s no other viable option. They could try and borrow it but they’d get laughed at by proper lenders who can see a risk like them a mile off, or offered some of the money at extremely high interests rates by dodgy lenders who’d attach very strict conditions to the repayment. Milan and Lille have been take over by vulture capitalists in the last couple of years, who lend the club money and then take it over when they default on repayments.

They aren’t talking about equity conversion any more, its long term loans from the directors. The days of free handouts seem to have gone. Loans to be paid back and with interest attached.

Also the cash-flow shortfalls have been questioned by the auditors – they don’t seem to believe that the figures are realistic. You have to wonder where they got a figure of less than 500k for next year, it must be conditional on all sorts of success on the pitch and selling several players, for a lot of money.

“Their revenue is £13 million behind ours – I find this quite surprising when you consider we sell at least 5K more season tickets than them and could have up to 10K more fans at our home games.”

£13m is a huge difference in a year when there was no proportional difference in match day revenues outside of ticket sales, in a year when they won the title with extra prize money that brings, did much better than us in the Europa League with two extra knockout ties and more lolly from doing much better in the groups and didn’t have all the off the pitch turmoil we had. If I was them I’d be very worried that the difference in their best season ever on the pitch was pretty much the difference between Europa League and Champion League football.

“We’ve a merchandise deal that completely blows them out of the water and sponsorship deals described as record breaking.”

We do indeed. Our merchandise sales increased by £7.6m (50.7%) to £22.6m. Theirs went up .7m to 4.5m. Pretty worrying if you’re them, 20% increase in the year they won’t the title and when every other online business was reaping the benefits of furlough cash. Will anyone ask where the rest of it’s going?

  12. In Europe our football is worth watching now which was not always the case …. upgrades in a few positions and we will be up to the next rung in the pecking order.

Irrespective of the pot haul this year …. I’m expecting us to be in fine shape this time next year …. Still there will be days when you leave the ground shaking your head and moaning ….

Midfield needs more cover in Jan , the guys are putting in a big shift every game

  13. £16m loans in total needed to see them through this year

    £0.4m needed for next

Are they going to sell Morelos off by the pound?

  14. Was out on one of my penitential runs yesterday and due to COP26 I had to divert from my favoured Clyde run down towards Clydebank.

So instead…it was Pacific Quay, Govan Road, and……EDMISTON DRIVE!!

Got a few cracking wee pics to be fair — those are for later– but this one really caught my eye and gave me an excuse to stop and gather breath while stifling a guffaw or two.

They really need to sort out their paint artist payments before they get him to do the tribute pictures….

  15. We’ve a new manager in a new era, Ange ain’t Lennon Peter’s away, so will the Greg Taylor, Tony Ralston new contracts escape the usual ‘downsizing brigade’s labelling and pillorying.

  16. Hard to pick out a man of the match last night the quality of Celtic’s football was superb and was a great watch for the neutral observer with both teams willing to attack. Anto Ralston went close yet again to get on the scoresheet and celebrate his new contract with that cracking header off the crossbar. Juranovic is obviously a class player to be on the Croatian national team but he surprised me with his electric pace needed on a few occasions. The substitutes all did well and at last the bench is beginning to look healthy. European football is where these players want to be and I wouldn’t rule us out of Europa knockout stage by any means.

  17. I bet I am not the only fan who gets very very nervous when we start passing the ball about our own goal area . I posted earlier my feelings on doing that as we are not the best at It to be honest , I feel clearing your lines at times via a boot up the park has its merit . We maybe wouldn’t have lost two goals had that happened . But opinions are like bellybuttons we all have one . HH

A glimpse of truth might appear on TV later at 8:00pm, from a leader of a political party in Britain, WPGB, the only party offering 100% working class socialist policies, which imho is the reason why this party leader has been on the receiving end of 4 death threats already this year, the latest this week were, George Galloway, was threatened with being stabbed to death, and that his children would also be harmed in some way.

This is days after a Tory mp was laid to rest after he was also stabbed to death.

The dead Tory mp was a Roman Catholic, like George Galloway is also.

GG will be interviewed by a journalist on GBNews, called Colin Brazier, who goes out of his way more often than not, whilst reporting the news, informing viewers that he is a devout Roman Catholic as well, not an admission that I’ve ever heard on ANY MSM, hmmm, are they going to tell us that there’s an anti-Catholic killing spree under way, that is being well covered up by 99.9% of worldwide MSM?

I know that most on here don’t like GG, but, tonight you might learn something to make you think differently about a lot of thing! Maybe not.

This is tonight at 8:00pm, the only MSM outlet to report this covered up threat to life, number 4 this year already!

    GBNews 8:00pm. ✌ 👍 👇
