Celtic scintillate. The Red Sea flows by Govan

Part of me would like to believe that Celtic destroyed Ferencvaros with a multi-cultural display of slick football as a consequence of the hostile reception they received for an expression of support for racial equality before kick-off.    But that’s not true.  The home supporters deserved no more than to see their team bettered and beaten, Celtic would have been as fabulous no matter.

An early goal followed by an early concession gave the expectation that anything could happen.  Liel Abada’s returned to the first team after a few weeks rest did him the power of good, he snatched onto a poor defensive touch, squaring for Kyogo.  What followed took me back 20 years….. it’s been that long since we’ve had someone with such composure.

Joe Hart could do nothing about the deflected equaliser but when he smothered a shot midway through the first half, he sprung to his feet to release a break.  David Turnbull got the faintest of touches for what would prove to be another assist as the ball found its way to Joto on the left.  The Portuguese drew four defenders before firing a shot that clipped one on its way into the net off a post.

Celtic were on fire now and spurned several chances to stretch their lead, the best when Kyogo controlled an inch-perfect Turnbull pass before dinking the goalkeeper, only to be denied by a goal line clearance.  When the third came, it was another poster moment for great football.  Turnbull won the ball for McGregor to find Kyogo, who played a pass into the box, between defenders.  Abada did not break his stride as he found the corner of the goal.

A late consolation brought Ferencvaros within striking distance of Celtic but the visitors managed the game to the final whistle without concern.  The Europa League knockout rounds are still a possibility but it will almost certainly be the Conference League, which Celtic are now assured of.

Newco accounts for the year to 30 June 2021 are out.  I’ll do a more in-depth look later, a few headlines:

Comprehensive loss for the year was £26.024m, elsewhere you will mainly see the lower operating loss figure quoted, not that £24.153m is low.

For Financial Fair Play purposes, Uefa permit this loss to be adjusted due to the unique circumstances we have lived through.  A quick ready reckoner of this:

While other revenue streams and costs remain consistent with the previous campaigns, gate receipts are down £17.46m (no fans spending money at games) and operating costs are down £8.8m (no fans to serve or steward at games).  Subtract the former from the latter and Uefa will forgive £8.6m of the comprehensive loss, reducing the Financial Fair Play loss to £17.42m or thereabouts.

Football has returned to largely normal operations this year, so that £17.42m figure is a good proxy for Newco’s forward comprehensive loss.  For a business that has never earned more than £59m in its history, the lambeg drums must be ringing the alarm!  There’s so much red ink at Ibrox you’d mistake the Clyde for the Red Sea.

It’s a year to the day that my dad passed. I keep thinking that all the fireworks going off are a celebration of his life😉

I have only been at one game since we could get back in to watch.

It’s not the same without him.

Our tickets are getting used,so that’s a good thing.

My dad took my brother and me to Celtic games from the early 60s when we were boys. In later years when he was old and infirm my brother and I returned the compliment many times. Both have now passed on.

Every time I enter the gates of paradise I think of my dad lifting me over the turnstiles in those simpler days, not knowing we would soon be Champions of Europe.

Bernard and John gave us Celtic. We must always be thankful.

    Take care Sir.

When Celtic announced losses of £11million it was headline news on BBC Sport Scotland with a leader ‘What’s gone wrong at Celtic’ but compare and contrast with the rangers accounts which is the third/ fourth leader on the BBC sport Scotland website.

  6. VARIOUS OBSERVATIONS IN RELATION TO A NUMBER OF PREVIOUS POSTS

    1. Playing out from the back is the only way to go except in an emergency. When the goalie blooters it up the park just count the number of times it comes back with the opposition having picked it up. I think sometimes the goalie should make a decent throw out to a player outside his box (Big Joe has done this on a number of occasions) but in general we need to become exceptional at playing it out from the box.

    2. Taylor and Ralston with their new deals are part of the future in some form – definitely in the squad and competing for a place. I believe Boli (who is not as good as Taylor IMO) will be off as soon as there’s an interested party, hopefully in January. If a new left back comes in I can’t honestly see a place for Liam Scales. Hard to know what Ange is thinking, after all he wasn’t an Ange pick but a DD punt as was James McCarthy. I’d say Taylor and Ralston are better than anyone playing in Scotland and quite a number in England. We need to keep our perspective – we don’t have money to burn and we change our managers and hence style frequently and each manager has his own preferred type. Ange inherited both Ralston and Taylor but obviously has likes what he sees. Surely the decision to give new contracts was his?

    3. Many examples of not tall full/wing backs in very successful teams e.g. Liverpool. As long as there’s height in goalie and he’s good at taking a high ball and the CBs are a decent size and good in the air. I think our goalie could work on taking high balls more and our CBs are not too bad as headers of the balls that come in from set pieces. Above all they need to be clear about what they’re supposed to be doing.

    4. Ange seems the patient and confident type. He will quietly go about doing what he does. Presumably he’s not been feeling too pressurized into playing DD’s guys just because DD brought them in. DD presumably knows enough to pick a decent player (after all Scales was widely reputed to be the best player in Ireland and McCarthy was a highly competent Premier league player and an Irish International) so for me the issue is not that they’re bad players it’s will they fit into Ange’s system? I don’t think DD will have known this when he brought them in. I’d thin Scales has a better chance of success than McCarthy for age and fitness reasons but I hope McCarthy will make it too but he needs time and Ange is aware of that and acting appropriately. James McCarthy has had his injuries but they appear not to be due to anything other than rough play on the park. He doesn’t have glass knees or such like as far as I know.

    5. Things are looking good and it’s important to keep up the momentum on and off the park. There’ll be glitches like Livi but let’s not get despondent and start looking for scapegoats. All the players that Ange picks deserve our support. and it can only give them more confidence knowing that we’ll encourage them when they make a mistake. GG is a case in point – it was as poor a penalty as I’ve seen and Eduard’s comes to mind too – but it’s over, it happens.

  7. Really enjoyed our win on Thursday. Felt there is a real fluency growing. What I loved most was our togetherness players really working for each other and sounds are they are happy to buy-in to our manager’s philosophy😊🍀

    In the mean time

If this were us it be referenced for years

Sevco’s sponsor/executive supporters identified as ‘risk supporters’ ie hooligans by Danish Police and Brondby who went to assault Danish fans in toilets and threw beer at supporters.

Story explains their ordinary fans were criminal….we expect that, but essentially their ‘posh club ‘ are hooligans. 😂🤣😂

Yesterday’s match between Brøndby IF and Rangers FC ended 1-1, and both teams therefore got a point and more in the Europa League group game. Unfortunately, before, during and after the match there were battles with especially a group of Rangers fans.

CEO Ole Palmå talks about the security in connection with the match.

    – We have had a massive security effort up to this match, as Rangers fans have been trying for a long time to get tickets for the match. Rangers FC were awarded the obligatory five percent of the stadium capacity (1,400 tickets, ed.), And the outdoor section was immediately sold out. In addition to the 1,400 tickets, Rangers fans have not been allowed to get tickets to other sections of Brøndby Stadion, but despite constant communication from our side, we have had to go in and cancel several hundred tickets over the last week, as Rangers- fans got their hands dirty in various ways. We have on several occasions reached out to Rangers FC about this security risk, as Rangers fans are known and infamous for their fans trying to get into episodes they do not have access to, but we have had to conclude,

Before the start of yesterday’s match, more than 500 Rangers fans were turned away at the entrances to Brøndby Stadion with invalid and fake tickets, just as the ticket control and the gates to the away section were tried several times up to the opening of the stadium by Rangers fans, which meant that Copenhagen’s Vestegns Police had to pull the poles several times to ensure that only those with a valid ticket entered.

A large group of Scottish spectators were given access to Rangers FC’s sponsorships as part of UEFA’s requirements for the Europa League group stage. Rangers FC was responsible for the administration and distribution of these VIP tickets. Brøndby IF’s assessment of the group in question was that it consisted of “risk fans”, but when asked directly at the entrance to the sponsorship places, Rangers FC confirmed to Brøndby IF’s head of security, Mickel Lauritzen, that this group were sponsors of the club.

    Mickel Lauritzen explains the episode.

    – Unfortunately, our immediate risk assessment of this group of Rangers fans turned out to be correct. It was clear that this group was what we call “risk fans,” and shortly after their arrival, this group hung a flag on the sponsor seats, which can be connected to Rangers FC’s risk fans. Then it quickly developed into a car crash with a group of Brøndby fans, where our guards and the police had to intervene and calm the mood. During the match, this group acted threateningly towards spectators and staff, and several times threw beer at surrounding spectators, just as during the break they attacked random spectators on the toilets. Together with the police, we assessed that it entailed too great a risk to remove this group of “risk fans” from the stands, so we chose instead to place more guards in the area where they were sitting.

CEO Ole Palmå talks about a good collaboration with the police, and praises the many stewards who ensured an otherwise good outcome of the match.

    – We had a really good and constructive collaboration with the police yesterday, in what was a very unusual and difficult task. We would also like to thank our many hundreds of stewards at the stadium for making very thorough checks of fans, which helped to ensure that only those with tickets came in, despite the fact that several Scottish fans had worn Brøndby IF jerseys and scarves. All in all, there was a fantastic atmosphere in the stands during the match, where Sydsiden to that extent showed Brøndby Stadion by getting the whole stadium with them.

If this is the future, we can forget about the Champions league in the future.

I suppose there’s always the conference league, that’s more our level.

Fair enough but no player starts at Champions League standard. It takes development. Lets try for the league and see how our players but more importantly the side/team are when the CL comes around.

  13. Still looking for Superbru picks from Angel Gabriel, BGFC, BRTH, wee BGFC, and wee McCaff. I also see a few people have left out the score of the postponed Livi vs Hibs game. It is probably best to put in a provisional score now as you can change it nearer to the kick off date, if you wish. Your predictions can always be changed provided a) the match hasn’t started or b) you accidentally pressed the lock icon which fixes your score as unchangeable. I never use this option..

  14. Sorry; I couldn’t resist this: the headline on the front page of this week’s edition of the Catholic weekly The Tablet is “The Pope (Francis) who turned the Church green.”

Absolutely. Inthinknthecreakittbus, that’s where we’ll end up. Any kind of European football will be good for our new team to develop.

I see the huns made a good impression in Denmark 🤔. Was it reported much here? Meanwhile the cop protestor were ketled during the week. No doubt that technique was perfected at a couple of training sessions in George Square at the summer 🤔
