Celtic set for HJK Helsinki in Champions League qualifier

679

Celtic will almost certainly face HJK Helsinki in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.  The Fins are 7-0 after the first leg of their second qualifying round against KR Reykjavik.

HJK were the first team to beat Martin O’Neill’s Celtic as they overcame a first leg deficit in the 2000 Uefa Cup to force the tie into extra time.  Chris Sutton scored late to prevent the tie going to penalty kicks.  HJK are also top of their domestic league after 17 games, so will be a well-oiled machine by the time the arrive at Celtic Park on 31 July or 1 August.

It’s a stirring sight to see patriotic Finns, standing to attention, hands on their hearts, belting out the famous tune:

One of the interesting things about the Barca/Spain style isn’t just the importance of retaining possession (WGS’s teams and Wenger’s Arsenal fetishised possession to the point of being unwilling to try a shot because their keeper might break up their possession) but it is the energy they expend on winning back lost possession, which is not a feature borrowed from Basketball where ball stealing is rare.

    RST Board Statement

    Friday, 20 July 2012 13:06

The RST is angered at the suggestion Rangers should be stripped of nine trophies won since 2000. This is a ludicrous suggestion from discredited individuals in two governing bodies whose behaviour has brought Scottish football to the brink of collapse due to their lack of competence.

Not content with Rangers’ relegation to the third division and the loss of the vast majority of our first team pool, these vindictive and sinister individuals wish to hamstring the club further by imposing an effective ban on new signings.

The pomposity of suggesting that a kangaroo court impose penalties for alleged breaches of the operation of EBTs whilst three judges continue to consider the case in a tax tribunal is staggering.

The recently leaked wish-list of sanctions strains the credulity of any sentient human being that such juvenile mind-games are being played at this time of crisis for the whole Scottish game.

The RST urges the Board of Rangers Football Club to remain resolute and refuse to consider such ludicrous and vindictive sanctions. The club and fans have suffered enough and do not deserve and will not accept additional punishments for the crimes or omissions of others imposed by bodies whose own credibility is in tatters.

Our manager has been inspirational in leading the club over the last five months and we urge all to follow his example in refusing to consider sanctions which impinge on sporting endeavour and fairness.

I saw it last night and it’s the best laugh I’ve had in a play that is a tragi-comedy with an uplifting ending. Brilliant acting from Robbie Jack and Keith Fleming and their varied Irish accents were reasonably well done. Look out for some ad-libbing and corpsing too.

  9. Were there any rule changes made by the SFA as a result of the Clydebank to Airdrie United takeover?

Just wondering whether there are any rules inhibiting Sevco from doing the same thing.

The You Tube clip at the start of this is called “We are Celtic Supporters”.

One of the best, who thought of himself just an ordinary man, will be laid to rest today, and if you are of a faith , please remember him in your prayers.

I knew Frankie becuase of my Uncles Duncan & John. When I was a very young boy and started to go to the games , Frankie was part of “our table” in the Greenock Shamrock. The only way I can describe him is as the Model for the Mario Brothers. Small, heavy set, mass of curly black hair, black moustache, slight gap in his teeth, and a wee lisp. His appearance even more Mario like because he worked in United Mollases at the Dock, and wore a bright blue boiler suit, a cap, and a donkey jacket. If you didnt know him personally, then I am sure many will recognise the description of the wee man who could be seen walking along Hamilton Street, Ratho Street, or Morton Terrace, on his way to and from work.

My earliest memories of Frankie , were really of a calming head in our company. He was there and allways there, everywhere. They were halycon days to be a supporter. Aberdeen meant leaving Greenock at 7 in the morning …….. for a 3pm kick off. Not getting home till 2 in the morning.

So all through my boyhood , we were at the same memorable games, he saw them all. excpet 1 big one.

After my family moved to Blackpool, Frankie became my buddie for the games, we travelled together for the last season that the Shammy was opened, and I got to know him well, and a calm head, steering influence he was. We discussed many things, and I got to find out that he missed the Lisbon game , because, he has emigrated to the US, during 65, and on arriving was immediately signed into the army. Celtic win the big cup, while in a helicopter in Vietnam.

    Unbeliavble, but true.

All through life Frank and wife Rose hadnt been blessed with kids, and one day on his way to Tynecastle, a day that saw Celtic draw 1-1 with a late Paul McStay goal, he told me they wanted to adopt, but at his age, must have been late 40′s then might go against them, but they were going to try.

Frank and Rose adopted Sean, a bhoy with Downs syndrome a while later.

Sean was the funniest kid, a joy when you met him, affectionate, sometimes cheeky, but a laugh. Frank loved the bhoy , and from then he became the centre of his life.

A few times I asked him to come to the match but his life had changed and it was all about enjoying the times with Sean.

Sean passed away a few years ago, and had given Frank the best times in life.

So, raise a glass or say a prayer.

Frank Gallacher, he was the living soul of what being a Celtic supporter should be.

  18. Time and again we have heard how this deal or that deal has been done to give the hunz what they want.

But equally so, time and again we have seen that these stories are completely without foundation.

The SFA have all the cards on their side. They do not have to grant Sevco registration. In fact, rules dictate that they should not.

Moisty is playing hard-ball we are told. And exactly what is that I ask.

What cards does Moisty have to play with?

If you don’t let us in then we will boycott all your games?

    That is obviously the joker.

    +++++

The bit about that from the SFA perspective, the bit that they really don’t get, is not that the EBTs were implemented incorrectly as a form of tax avoidance, but about payments made to players by third parties.

This is not and has not been in dispute. They have been paying players via third parties. Which is a clear breach of the rules. In fact, having read the rules on this matter several times, I would say that they were put in place for almost exactly this reason: that players must not be paid additional sums that the club could ill afford to pay by themselves.

This is one of those FACTS that is genuinely factual.

I see Richard Finch is warming up for Aberdour in fine style:

Richard Finch carded a calamitous sextuple-bogey 10 at the 416-yard eight in a 79 that left him 13 over. The Englishman drove into a bunker and his escape hit the face and dropped into deep rough from where he carved it into trees and declared his ball lost. His second ball was in a similarly bad patch in the rough and his attempt to get out only resulted in a worse lie from where he had to take a penalty drop. He hacked out, pitched on to the green and two-putted.

“Playing safe and conservative was not really the way and it went from bad to worse. I think that was 10. Everyone in our group thought it was 10 so that was good enough,” said the Manchester-based 35-year-old.

  27. Sky stand to lose a fortune if they dont continue with their coverage of Scottish football .

There would be a mass cancellation of Sky subscriptions by football supporters in Scotland , costing Sky far more than they contribute to Scottish football.

  28. Of the worst twenty failed steps Africa nations make up fourteen, with seven in the worst ten. And the worst four are all African. Southern Africa has the highest murder rate on the planet with a ratio of 32 out of every 100,000. 26 of the top thirty poorest countries in the world are in Africa. Although Africa is home to about 14.5% of the world’s population, it is estimated to be home to 69% of all people living with HIV and to 72% of all AIDS deaths in 2009. Even places like where “industrial development” is most advanced and natural resources can be exploited by Western Corporations, like Kenya and Nigeria, particularly in Lagos, the murder/crime rate continues to explode.

There are a million reasons why Africa is so poor, and different reasons in different places. Take your pick from: protectionism, colonialism, climate, corruption, civil war, ethnic tension, dictatorship, instability, poor education, HIV/AIDS, bad government, lack of infrastructure, population growth, feudalism, and even racism…but one of the biggest reasons is MONEY. The EMF/World Banks have given rogue states vast amounts of money on loan that they cannot or will not ever be able to pay back- it is a form of post colonial slavery based on debt dependency. Not helped of course that many of these rogue states used the loans to buy weaponry from UK success stories like BAE systems etc.

However, I would just point out that 7 of the world’s 10 fastest growing economies (Including Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia) are in Africa…but statistics do lie unfortunately…a little added nothing can be misleading when it is numerically represented on a scientific chart.
