Celtic set to match and beat Scottish consecutive trophy record

316

As you know, Celtic have won six consecutive trophies. This had been achieved three times before in Scottish football, by Celtic in 1905-09, Rangers in 1963-65 and again by Rangers in 1992-94.  On the latter occasion, Rangers established a new record of seven consecutive domestic trophies.

Win on Sunday and we match Rangers’ record from the (painful) 90s, but that would set up this season’s League title as a new record decider.

The 1909 Scottish Cup was withheld after crowd trouble after the Celtic-Rangers final reply ended in a draw.  Celtic missed out on making it seven trophies in a row when Dundee won the 1910 Scottish Cup five days before Celtic secured the league title.

Those dark days in the 90s were hard.  Celtic were an afterthought for most fo the country, a sporting irrelevance.  Sunday is a chance to exorcise those dark days.

    Bottom line

But the accounts spell out very clearly that RIFC can only be considered a going concern because directors and other investors are willing to dig deep, and have promised to keep doing so.

One big question is how long Rangers can afford to live beyond its means. Or to put it more positively: how long and how much will this investment strategy require before it delivers profitable results?

It was a question put to Dave King at the AGM, to which the answer came: “As long as it takes”.

  4. maybe its just me, in our christmas ad did anyone else think when pc lustig appeared it was a subliminal dig at our ‘noisy neighbours’?

I didn`t offer it as a possibility. It was simply my way of saying it was quite refreshing to see a Manager displaying a sense of humour.

  7. Me too thought pc lustig was a dig at our critics. Missing from the advert was the Griff elf tying a scarf on something.

Bit unfair on the overlord of the daleks.

Does the SFA and Scottish media know that there is an Iconic Global Institution in their midst?

  10. As an Irishman who lived in the UK for 15 years I was aware of the suspicion with regards all things EU hence not all that surprised by the leave vote unlike a lot of people in Ireland who were shocked and of the view that the Brits had finally taken leave of their senses. The last 2 years has seen me join them ,with the likes of Johnson Mogg Farage Gove leading the discourse on negotiations and a PM who is floundering ……..Lemmings come to mind and my God the English educational system is obviously not fit for purpose . The Scottish one of course is better but needing help ………….as for Celtic 2 wins this week please – just hope the sheep are their usual selves and dont get lucky with a dubious refereeing decision ???another party on Sunday Hail Hail

  11. Rugby refereeing:

“Angus Gardner, the referee in charge of England’s win over South Africa earlier in the autumn, has admitted that he made the wrong call in not penalising Owen Farrell for his apparent no-arms tackle on Andre Esterhuizen………”At this level the expectation is that we do get it right – and that’s what we’re striving to achieve – but we don’t always.

“I suppose that’s the best way, just to be honest about it. If I made a mistake, I’ve got to put my hand up and say I was wrong”

    (Sky Sports Podcast)

I wonder if we will ever get this level of openness and honesty in Scottish football refereeing.

you’re right for years the UK parliament have blamed the EU for lots of our ills – then they are surprised that the electorate voted to get out.

Ireland on the other hand have benefited largely from their membership – think they only became nett contributors in 2016.

Going round my daughter’s for tea or is that dinner – anyway laters

  13. JIMTHETIM. Given that he is such a poor referee, will we be able to tell if Dallas Junior is making SFA Honest Mistakes or not on Sunday?

  14. Watching Athletico v Monaco and Lemar hits the outside of post with stunning free kick from 25 yards.

What really caught my attention was how much bigger the 10 yards marked by ref was than at the free kicks Celtic get seemed.

    Are my eyes deceiving me?

I often wondered why our free kicks seem to be about 8 yards from wall and put it down to paranoia.

    Not so sure now.

  15. Always remember Hugh Dallas gaining a bit if notoriety before he became a referee. The local high school he attended had a recreation room for senior pupils (5th year?) where they were allowed to smoke. The school or local authority decided that the pupil rec. room would have a smoking ban. The bold Hughie brought the pupils out on strike. It was reported in all the Scottish papers.

The argument was that the teachers could smoke in the staff room. The pupils were above 16 years old. So why the difference? Cant remember how it worked out. Not sure if Hughie even smoked. I don’t think he did, he lived a minute away from me. I think he was just being a bit belligerent!

His dad used to come to our house every week to collect the football coupon (Vernons).
