I’m not convinced that any meeting of minds between Celtic and Legia Warsaw to allow the latter to take the place of the former in the Champions League play-off round would be recognised by Uefa. Having researched as thoroughly as possible, I’ve found no precedent for such an arrangement to be invoked.
It would, therefore, probably be safe for Celtic to take the high moral ground and acquiesce with Legia, but that would be a cheap shot at being generous, Celtic have no intentions of becoming involved, whether they have the opportunity or not.
The utter distress Legia are enduring because of an administrative oversight will cause untold damage. The club have to try everything possible, including an appeal which invokes Willie Maley and Jock Stein, but they must find a clear path through Uefa, which does not appear to exist.
What Celtic can do, is appeal to Uefa to have processes changed, just as we did in 1970 when we profited from the toss of a coin. Instead of clubs having the responsibility of checking available players, they could be issued with the same list the Uefa observer had on Wednesday, making this mistake less likely.
Current processes allow a minor infraction to cause disproportionate harm to a football club, and the tournament itself. Celtic should not hesitate in saying so.
Registration partially tightens tonight on player eligibility for our Champions League play-off round against NK Maribor. After today, clubs can only add one player to their squad for these games.
While it is important to get players in ahead of Maribor, I’m not convinced the arrivals will be able to have a transformational impact. It will largely be those already at Lennoxtown who will exorcise the demons of Murrayfield.
For what it’s worth, Maribor think they are absolute certainties to progress. Planning to analyse them in detail tomorrow; I’m not betting against them.
I was mystified as to how relegated Hearts managed to win away from home in their first game as a lower league club but now I’ve heard Ally McCoist blame the off-field input of Charles Green it all makes sense. How could any footballer reasonably expect to put in a shift with a former director speaking to the media some time earlier?
Delighted to hear the Daily Record swooped in to asset this as the reason for Newco Rangers demise yesterday. It’s the same deflection as went on during Murray/Whyte/Green years all over again. Why do they do this to themselves?
Let’s hope Ally sticks to his guns are clings to that contract like a fudge doughnut.

Some posters have been fairly prolific lately in their outright condemnation of our new manager. Makes you wonder ….
My tuppence – on the strength of his track record (despite his youth) the manager has my support in turning an overrated under performing group of players into a fit unit that can play a modern game.
I am less confident about his assistant whose track record is not impressive and appears to have been brought in to play the “Peter Grant is part of the new management team” role.

Want to show Ronny Deila how it should be done? Think your better than Stein? Do you have the luck of Celtic or the administration talents of Legia? Then here is the invite code to the CQN Championship Fantasy Football League, we are now approaching 100 teams entered.

You have 5 days left to register your team & join the league.

As an added incentive I’ve decided to offer some prizes for the top 3 come the end of the season. The winners will each receive items of their choosing from the Official Celtic Webstore to the tune of
1st £100
2nd £75
3rd £50
Or alternatively, winners can choose to donate any winnings to a Celtic charity of their choice.
Also if by some miracle I end up in the top 3, the winnings will be passed onto the next placed team.

Mushroom season early this year!
Two quick observations:
(1) As Celtic are a PLC, PL is LEGALLY bound to ensure he runs the business in the best interests of shareholders – that means he could personally (or Celtic vicariously) be sued by shareholders for loss of revenue;
(2) Even if LW were to be reinstated, the seedings mean that they would then have an advantage over the position they would have been in – they would play Maribor, whereas had the issue not arisen, they could potentially have faced Arsenal, et al. So, if UEFA were to reverse their decision, the top ranked non-seeded team (not sure who that was) could reasonably argue that LW have caused them to face a less realistic prospect of success, as they would otherwise have been seeded. So, if it were Besiktas, they could argue that they would be more likely to qwualify for the group stages facing Maribor than they do facing Arsenal. What does UEFA do then? Reverse the ties (so LW play Arsenal and Besiktas play Maribor)? ANd what about the fans who have already bought tickets, travel, hotels, etc?
It’s too far gone for UEFA to change their minds. Time to move on….

The first monologue you printed gave me visions of Michael Palin sitting in a semi-darkened room, with a mixture of anger and tears and with quivering voice ardently looking at the camera whilst delivering it.
Could become a Monty Python classic.

Where’s for the best place to park the car for the game on Wednesday night lads (coming in from Crieff). Looking at the map,Tesco or B& Q look like an option. Anybody know if they have a parking time limit.
Tesco will hit you with a ticket, but you do not need to pay it, it’s unenforceable
tony donnelly67,
if thats aimed at me then for clarification I am a big fan of the board and don’t read the DR!
Its our reputation I am worried about and if the shoe was on the other foot I think we would be equally outraged.
Its a humane and sporting gesture I am talking about here…………think about it!
I see no structure in this Celtic team!!!

Parking for the St Johnstone game – they have their own car park if you get there early enough, and it’s free.
Alternatively, why not park in the entrance area to the racecourse, and walk over the motorway bridge to the ground (10 mins)? That way you’re already on the road to Crieff once the game’s over.

Is the deal being touted as a loan or permanent move?
bmcuw
So we never threatened it! (outwith Buffon)
The Celtic focus should still be on improvement on a deadline day, – pretty sure
Aberdeen having spent money, and we’ve not yet, is uppermost on the supporters agenda.
On us :- whether it’s justifiable or not, there is no doubt that there will be collateral damage to our reputation arising out of all of this unless UEFA unequivocally clarify that the we are entirely innocent( no matter how fortunate) here and that any attempt to defer to LW or allow them in (were we to play and lose an unofficial challenge match) would result in sanctions against us AND still not allow LW to go through.
Perhaps UEFA need to await the lodging and outcome of an appeal before commenting.
On thems – The MSM seem to have overlooked the fact that someone purporting to be an aide or spokesman for George Soros has refuted any suggestion that he’s investing. Small point I know…

Incorrect
Legia would have played another champion
They would have played Red Bull, Steaua, Ludogorets, APOEL or BATE
Arsenal go down the Non Chanpions route
Champions do not play non champions in CL qualifying

FRASER FORSTER may not come near to Buffon in terms of fee,but I reckon he is about the fifth most expensive keeper in history.
So,fair point.
I dont know if it was last season or the season before Celtic were reported to be interested in Billy Sharp of Southampton. H.H.
I agree with your suggestion Paul67.
There is a PR war going on at the same time and I think we should seek what opportunity there is, to walk away from it positively.
I also think there may be an opportunity to forge a friendship with a main player within one of the few unsaturated markets in Europe – lets offer 2 x friendlies, 1 in Warsaw and 1 @ Celtic Park and roll out the red carpet for them.
From 2 perspectives – morally it would be wrong to just leave them as they are, £10-15m shy of what they should have never mind the fact they might have got into the CL
Cynically, there is talent in Poland – it wasnt just the fact they whipped us over 180 minutes, it was the way they did it.
Barring the first 10 minutes of the 1st leg when I thought they looked poor – they pressed, passed at speed, moved off the ball etc.

Squire Danaher,
Thanks for clarifying – I used Arsenal-Besiktas as an example as it was the only other draw I could remember. The principle still applies though – LW would potentially have an easier tie were we to drop out and they play Maribor than they would have otherwise and, conversely, another team would have a more difficult tie as they dropped from being seeded (when we were knocked out) to unseeded (when we were reinstated).
BMCUWP/Bournesouprecipe
FF does not even come close to being the most expensive goalkeeper transfer.
Angelo Peruzzi, Sebastian Frey, Peter Czech, David De Gea, Franscesco Toldo, Peter Lloris, Manuel Neuer & Buffon were all more expensive

Celtic’s reputation will only be tarnished if they were to let Legia have their way.
Celtic would then truly be the laughing stock of World football, the biggest mugs on the planet.
There’s not a club in the world that would yield to the emotional blackmail Legia are employing.
Once UEFA make a final statement on this issue, Celtic should issue a statement admonishing every person and agency which has tried to portray Celtic as the bad guys in this whole affair.
Get it straight. Legia officials stuffed up.
End of story.
Celtic have done remarkably well to remain so restrained. But, as with other events on the go in Glasgow, Celtic do tend to respond by saying very little.
http://www.philmacgiollabhain.ie/regarding-alistair/#more-4948
Amusing given that Sleekit was at pains to stress he wasn’t blaming the substitute for Hearts’ winner.
As most others have said, this is an absolute open and close case.
Legia fielded a suspended player and so the 2nd leg result is 3-0 to Celtic.
If Legia had won the first leg 4-0 we wouldn’t heat a peep from them about this decision.
The rules are enfoced to punish Legia. The fact that this subsequently beneifts Celtic is neither here nor there.
Likewise the fact that Celtic were awful at Murrayfield is irrevelant. If we had won 2-0 and were denied a last minute stonewell penalty the injustice may seem less significant but the rules are not to be applied to favour only teams who play well.
Legia have no right to use emotional blackmail against Celtic. We have done nothing wrong (except play badly) and must accept UEFA’s decision.
Bobby murdoch – nice one!
tony Donnely67-
just wanted to clarify, nothing personal taken.
worried from the point of view that if we don’t be seen to make any gesture of sympathy or empathy with their situation then our great name becomes a little tarnished.
I have every faith that the current board will be working on a PR master plan.
What haven’t done anything wrong but we can do something right!!
