Celtic should to plan to score in Lisbon

878

Benfica enjoyed a 0-2 away win on Friday evening to remain joint-top of the Portuguese league with Porto.  They will have enjoyed a day off while Celtic played on Saturday and will two days training before tomorrow’s game.  By contrast, Celtic player will have rested yesterday and will get no more than a run out inside Estadio da Luz tonight.  With games coming thick and fast at the moment, hopefully rest is the most important requirement for the players.

Benfica shredded Spartak for most of the second half in Moscow but contrived to miss what chances they created, allowing the Russians their only win of the group so far.  The return game in Lisbon was a comfortable win for the home team.

Neil Lennon has some major tactical decisions to make.  He will surely acknowledge the danger Benfica pose but has to find a way of scoring an away goal or two.  Match day one between Celtic and Benfica brought a 0-0 draw, ostensibly a good result for the visitors, but the group has matured since then.  Both teams played that game as though it was an away game; Benfica were happy to defend and Celtic, in their first Champions League game since 2008, were keen to feel their way back into the tournament.

This time Benfica will attack with speed and hope that Celtic open up a little more than they did against Barcelona.  It’s important also to acknowledge that while Benfica are no Barcelona, they will also be less predictable than the Catalans, we will not have it all our own way in the air.

It’s going to be a game tiring 90 minutes where the use of fresh legs could be crucial but an early Celtic goal would allow Neil Lennon to set his stall out clearly.

Orders are now open for the very first CQN Annual, get it here!

  1. Morning all!!

Hyped up for tonight – glory beckons!

Will watch the Spartak – Barca game hoping for a draw or an away win.

Game will be tough – but I honestly feel we can get a score draw which could see us through to the last 16: we have scored 8 goals in our 4 away matches in the CL so far – another couple tonight would do nicely!

This is another big day for our club. A score-draw will do us,and all with a game to go!

Our boys have already proven themselves worthy of being BHOYS,and now we are watching them progress as men.

Men to be proud of as a fan, men to fear as an opponent.

The ties against Barcelona woke the world to our resurgence, tonight we have an opportunity to prove that we deserve our place in the spotlight.

Tonight is our chance to shout…….

    Good morning CQNers,

    Back to matters football.

Tonight’s watch word has to be discipline, something that’s been our forte but I think we may see a Porto-like performance from Benfica in a bid to unsettle us.

  12. Good morning from the Chilled Chilterns…

Two matches to go for last sixteen qualification and we are looking good.

We have the chance of Barca vanquishing one opponent before we kick a ball, then we have the opportunity to put ourselves in a prime position with our closest challengers.

It has been Neil’s team’s indominable spirit and some exquisite exellence from talented young players that have got us here.

More of the same please Celtic…

    Sorry for the late reply.

However, I didn’t say Hamas was a moderate group.

I said they were not Al Qaida. I said they were fighting to defend their people and ever shrinking homeland from an aggressive and hugely powerful neighbour.

At no time did I say they were moderate.

  17. 50 shades of green on

every time we play Benfica my mind drifts back to 1969 and our first leg which we won 3 nil.

my wee dad took me to that game and sat me on one of the barriers to watch.

dont remember to much about the game itself except that we were packed in like sardines.

i was only 9 yrs old and loving every min of it.

my dads mate had brought a flask of coffee with him and poured himself a cup after the first goal.

he then dropped the flask and gave me the coffee to hold.

of course as he went scurrying after the flask i decided to have a fly drink.

after much coughing and spluttering on my part i was then told that i had just had just my first taste of brandy yuck

think i will toast them both with one tonight.

    a memories.

Celtic to win it tonight with the odd goal in 3.

Just a point about Green’s claims about future share prices doubling.

Anyone with any training in business valuation will tell you that the the current value of a business is the present value of all future free cash flows.

Think about that for just a minute.

If you can predict all of the future cash flows today, then the value of the company today will include all of that information. That means predictions of prices doubling next year is just illogical tosh. In fact it is worse than that. When a director of company that is planning a listing predicts that its price will double, he is misleading investors.

Stock prices increase when investors discover new information- i.e. their expectation of future profits increases or the amount they are willing to pay for £1 of profit changes in the future. However, none this is not knowable at the time of listing by anyone.

Sevco may well produce fantastic (literally) projections of future profits, but that sets today’s price not next year’s. The possible explanations for someone claiming that their share price will double within a year include (but are not limited to) stupidity, ignorance, and deception. Of course, many of these may exist in combination.

Just to further clarify the point made above-

Even if you predict today that profits will double next year, that is built into today’s price. It does not affect the share price next year. Next year’s share price changes in response to changes in projections for future profits at that time. If we knew the profits for future years that we will estimate next year, we would simply calculate today’s price based upon that data.

It is conceptually difficult to grasp for the uninitiated at first, but no less true for that.

    Is this clear?

    :oD))))

    Perfectly clear, thank you

  20. Solidarity with victimised fans

The Trust has for some months now been receiving very worrying indications of what appears to be almost a vendetta against Celtic fans in general, and the Green Brigade in particular, by Strathclyde Police/FoCus.

We have raised this on at least two occasions with the Club.

This has now come to a head and together with the unprecedented treatment we received at Tannadice (based on ‘intelligence’ from Strathclyde Police that there was an ‘arranged fight between Celtic fans and Dundee Utd fans!), we feel strongly that we need to unite and stand up to this.

The Fans Against Criminalisation campaign will be meeting early next week to plan our response/strategy. However, in the meantime the Green Brigade have decided to boycott the next two home games beginning with the game against Inverness on Saturday. In solidarity with them, we are calling on all supporters to stand up for the 12th man at the 12th minute and chant ‘Stand up for the Green Brigade’.

Please spread the word, bring banners, flags and whistles or just bring yourself but at the 12th minute, stand up for Celtic fans and

Stand up for the Green Brigade!

who have raised the issue with the club twice!

    ……….

why does the statement from the trust not say what celtics reply was or indeed if they never got one?

Also was this matter brought up at the agm?

And Celtics statement yesterday on the accusations yesterday was pretty clear on that issue

  24. Very nervous about tonight. It almost seems to much to hope for that this young team can show the kind of maturity needed AGAIN to get something from this game.

Timing your performances to peak in this competition usually takes a few years to learn and yet here we are.

I’ll take anything out of the game tonight and be grateful for it.

  25. I was in Lisbon for the last game when “the Heid” beat us 3-0.

Took a taxi to the Estadio Nacional and by chance the team and the Lions were there at the same time.

It’s hard to describe the feeling of walking on the pitch and down the tunnel. Big Tam Gemmell was holding court outside the dressing rooms and he said the place was more or less exactly as it was in ’67.

Any of you lucky enough to be there, it’s a MUST DO!
