Celtic should to plan to score in Lisbon

878

Benfica enjoyed a 0-2 away win on Friday evening to remain joint-top of the Portuguese league with Porto.  They will have enjoyed a day off while Celtic played on Saturday and will two days training before tomorrow’s game.  By contrast, Celtic player will have rested yesterday and will get no more than a run out inside Estadio da Luz tonight.  With games coming thick and fast at the moment, hopefully rest is the most important requirement for the players.

Benfica shredded Spartak for most of the second half in Moscow but contrived to miss what chances they created, allowing the Russians their only win of the group so far.  The return game in Lisbon was a comfortable win for the home team.

Neil Lennon has some major tactical decisions to make.  He will surely acknowledge the danger Benfica pose but has to find a way of scoring an away goal or two.  Match day one between Celtic and Benfica brought a 0-0 draw, ostensibly a good result for the visitors, but the group has matured since then.  Both teams played that game as though it was an away game; Benfica were happy to defend and Celtic, in their first Champions League game since 2008, were keen to feel their way back into the tournament.

This time Benfica will attack with speed and hope that Celtic open up a little more than they did against Barcelona.  It’s important also to acknowledge that while Benfica are no Barcelona, they will also be less predictable than the Catalans, we will not have it all our own way in the air.

It’s going to be a game tiring 90 minutes where the use of fresh legs could be crucial but an early Celtic goal would allow Neil Lennon to set his stall out clearly.

Orders are now open for the very first CQN Annual, get it here!

  1. Re The GB

I have seen a few folk decide Celtic are colluding with the police on the basis that the police know a lot of the green brigade’s name’s. I would put forward, bearing in mind I’m sure there are times when the police use their powers to request information, which Celtic legally have to comply with, that its not that difficult for a multi million pound detective agency.ie the police, to find out the names of many other green brigade members from other source’s including the name’s enforceably taken.

Facebook is one of many tracing sources the police use, and green brigade members like many of us, handily list the names of our friends with pictures. Someone put the theory, yes but even they ‘greet’ you by your first name you as you enter section 111 or away games, as evidence they get your details from season tickets data, well unless you have your seat number strapped to your forehead, how do they know your seat number before you even enter the section 111.

It goes without saying, we must support and ask the club to support anybody that is being harassed or intimidated, but I can’t damn the board on the evidence provided so far.

  2. greenmaesto – not sure what you mean mate. The 1947 UN plan map doesn’t have any grey areas on it.

Good luck to his team tonight.

Even if we were to lose, we still have it all to play for at home against Spartak

Hopefully most us will bear that in mind at FT if the worst happens

If Barca beat Spartak, we have European fitba after Christmas guaranteed.

Also, Spartak might be a bit deflated for the final match in Glasgow.

If Spartak beat Barca it’s all up in the air.

A draw and probbaly Barca have to play a bit against Benefica in the last game.

    Benfica 1-1 Celtic

If I had my choice….I would fancy our chances in the Europa league.

If we got a run in that tournament, it would continue the development of

    Lennon’s lion’s. imo

At the weekend I was swaying toward a victory for us tonight but, after putting

in a little more thought to things…Benfica shouldn’t be underestimated.

    And they won’t be.

NFL is a very clever young man. Every day is a school day when he’s around.

Btw…don’t rule out NFL from, throwing a curve-ball in favor of the GB, once the

fitba stuff is oot the road.

It’s not a very good situation between the GB and the police right now but, in a twisted sort of way…I’m glad the bored came out with their ham-fisted statement.

Why no name attached to the letter ?

Why no press/MSM conference to shine a light on this disgrace ?

Why no expressions of unity ?

Far too many folk on the bored are prepared to take executive salaries but, when

it comes to carrying out exective duties….they’ll run a mile. imo

P.S. The Club statement(LLLLLOOOOOOLLLL), reminds me of, when the mibbery reached new heights in 2010….what did the bored/executives/whatever do ?

That’s right, they sent a letter to the BBC’s Chris McLaughlin…outlining the clubs

concerns about refereeing decisions that seemed to have a habit of going against the club Signed by…A SOURCE ?!?! WTF was that all about ?

The Celtic hierarchy are a bunch of charlatans who should be gotten rid off. imo

    But hey…I’m not saying this because it’s popular…but because it’s NECESSARY !!!

    Sack the Bored NOW !!!

Their kidd-gloves treatment of the GB, will hopefully spell their END. imo

    Hail Hail

  17. This season has already given us FAR MORE than we could have reasonably expected.

Taking anything from tonight’s game would be a huge bonus.

I hope there will be no carping or recriminations if we fall short.

    We ARE becoming spoiled.

Sorry to those who feel otherwise, but I am far more concerned about Gaza than I am about Celtic’s CL prospects.

  19. When anyone says they haven`t heard from so and so for a while, it doesn`t mean these so and sos are being quiet; simply that their words are not being reported. In the case of McCoist and Green, I would imagine that any utterings have been too outrageous for even our MSM to spin.

Keep posting if you can, but above all keep well.

  22. There is every chance we can lose this game tonight. At home Benfica are a different animal from their away from. We should remember this and we should remember how difficult this will be tonight.

We must hope that Barcelona win their game and that guarantees European football post Christmas. We can relax knowing that we are through to one European competition and Benfica will know this really is it for them – win or bust.

Every game we’ve played against them in a pair has been a mirror image – 3-0 twice, 1-0 twice and this season 0-0.

    0-0 Would do me.

They won’t win in the Nou Camp UNLESS Barcelona play an entire reserve side and even then their reserves are pretty damn good.

Spartak losing puts them out completely and who knows what team they’ll play in Glasgow from there.

Even with a defeat, we are not out of the last 16 BUT a win or a draw tonight would represent a hell of a culmination of a journey that many of us didn’t see possible after Ross County.

We should all be proud no matter what happens tonight.
