Celtic’s revenue bounced back from the year without fans in the six months to 31 December 2021. Income was up almost 30% to £52.9m, only £8m below the full year earnings to 30 June 2021. The club reported a £7m trading profit before intangibles in the interims, released this evening. But wait for it……… Add in the profit from player sales of £25.9m and you get a pre-tax profit £27.6m (intangibles, like amortisation are deducted before the pre-tax position)!
Player acquisitions during the period totalled £16.8m, which will push our running annual amortisation charge up a tad from it’s trend of £13m.
Cash in the bank on 30 June was £25.6m, which goes some way to explaining the splurge of signings we have enjoyed in the intervening period.
Manage your assets
The first take away for me is the contrast between our £25.8m earned in player sales to the £1.0m earned in the corresponding period a year earlier. We kept Edouard, Ajer and Co. in order to chase another milestone. Player trading is where it’s at. Sure, it is risky, do not expect the kind of value and performance we have seen in the last two windows forever, but we trade or we fail. I remember the good old days on here, when managing your assets was a controversial aim.
Win the league
The second observation is that this was a season with Europa League football. Imagine, for a second, we got to the Champions League next season. The possibilities are really quite interesting!

I have misgivings about how someone can in effect be condemned as a criminal without having the benefit of a criminal trial. Anyone who has any regard for civil liberties should share those misgivings. Those misgivings are exacerbated by the way a social media pile on can be exploited for their own purposes by intolerant and authoritarian politicians.

The timing of the cup tie with Celtic is fortuitous for a club that’s suddenly faced with an unexpected bill for £100,000+, which for PR reasons they’ll want to pay asap.
It seems reasonable that the bill will be funded from their share of the gate.
So for a Celtic fan, outraged by the whole situation, and overwrought with sympathy for the victim, what a heaven sent opportunity to not only make an actual gesture, not just a verbal one and at the same time deny Raith Rovers much needed income. Hell, they could even donate the price of the ticket to the victim or a suitable charity.
But it seems they weren’t actually that bothered after all.

Very very impressive results.
The profit speaks for itself, but that cash position, given the amount of players we’ve bought is pretty remarkable. And very important, we could happily live with a couple of years of modest losses but we would really struggle if we didn’t have access to cash. It’s what’s driving the others to reckless decision making while we can concentrate on winning this league while keeping an eye on the middle term. Big sales guarantee a steady cashflow over several years, as the cash installments roll in. As Paul said player trading really is the only gave in town for clubs like us. And despite all the doom-laden predictions we seem to have a fair few players now in the right age group to be atttactive to the sort of clubs who’ll pay big money for prospects. Nobody in the EPL buys unproven players under 25 anymore., look at Transfermarkt fir transfers over the last few years for proof of that
There was a long-running debate on CQN about the wisdom of maintaining a large cash balance a few years ago. I don’t think anyone can argue now it wasn’t a good thing.
It would appear for all the talk of debt-free competitors And their access to hunners of millions of poonds we seem to have come out of the wreckage of last season considerably stronger than our near neighbours.

I know what I was told and I believe it, the timing of the game and the uproar is coincidence IMO.
Had a wee look back at our other cup tie against Raith Rovers back in September which we won 3-0. Apart from Monty who started that night, and Urgoguide every player either on show, or on the bench is still in situ. Two starters, Ajeti and Turnbull are injured, while McCarthy, Soro and Scales are bit part part players, as is Welsh, but all have made some contribution in some games. Not sure about Boli, he’s either still in limbo, or he is in purgatory, but might yet surprise us. The major change in the ranks since of course are the Bhoys from Japan. Point being Ange took that game seriously, but also used it to give players like Scales some game time. Like An Tearmann and others Sunday’s match could provide a good opportunity for young Doaks who has impressed in two cameo roles. Maybe Dawson too at some point. That said it’s a game to win. And we have a squad to do it.
