CELTIC STAR IS TOP TARGET

CELTIC stand-in skipper Mikael Lustig is a shock summer target for top Swedish outfit AIK.

The Stockholm club are planning to bring the international defender back to his homeland when his current deal expires in June.

Lustig, who will be 32 next month, stated he could remain at the champions for another year, as reported by CQN on Tuesday, but if there is not an extension offer on the table he could agree a pre-contract with AIK in January.

The club’s Sporting Director Bjorn Wesstrom admitted there is interest in the 72-times capped right-back.

S-T-R-E-T-C-H…Mikael Lustig clears up a menacing moment in the scoreless stalemate at Livingston last week.

He said: “I just have to stress very strongly here that this is a player who has a contract that has a year left and to contact him now, we must have Celtic’s blessing, and we have not requested that.”

Lustig joined the Hoops on January 2012 as a free agent from Norwegian outfit Rosenborg and has been the team’s onfield leader in recent games with captain Scott Brown sidelined through injury.

He has won seven Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups and three League Cups during his years at Parkhead in more than 250 appearances, scoring 19 goals, including one memorable solo effort in the 5-1 triumph at Ibrox in April 2017.

If Lustig moves on, it could leave Rodgers short of cover in the No.2 position. Costa Rican international Cristian Gamboa has already filled in on five occasions in this campaign and Anthony Ralston is also awaiting his opportunity.
