Celtic support, players and management common cause since Sunday

341

You detect a notion in some circles that Newco might beat Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final next week, if only Scott Brown was removed from the equation. This belief is based on two football games, the corresponding fixture last season, when Newco prevailed on penalty kicks, and the more recent league draw at Celtic Park. On both occasions Celtic played well within themselves.

By any measure, we could lose on Sunday. Ross County (8th in the table) took a point on Sunday, while Partick Thistle and Newco have both drawn at Celtic Park in the last five weeks. Football regularly provides random results, and Celtic are due one. You will also share concerns we all have about refereeing decisions denying us the treble, as happened on Scottish Cup semi-final day two years ago.

But is a referee fails to award Celtic a penalty when an opponent punches the ball off the line, refuses to red card the player, then awards our opponents a penalty, and sends a Celtic player off, our chances of delivering the treble will likely perish again. None of this will have anything to do with Scott Brown.

We faced this lot in September without our talisman, Leigh Griffiths, who was injured. This created space for Moussa Dembele to score a hat-trick. What Moussa proved that day is that games are not determined by those who miss out, but by the attitude of those who take to the field.

Consider, for a moment, the attitude among the Celtic support, players and management since Sunday. There’s a sense of grievance there, a pulling together in the face of a clear injustice. It’s almost impossible to conjure up such a scenario when you’ve passed 40 games undefeated in the season, but here we are.

Let’s bring it onto the Hampden pitch.

The raffle winner of two tickets for the semi-final, courtesy of Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, has been informed but I’ve not had a confirmation email back – so check your inbox!!

  1. Behind the goal assistant standing 10 yards away, Atleti player sythed from behind in the box. No decision. Pointless.

  2. So the wee inverclyde celtmasoul is the manager of hundee, they are well matched.

A former Celtic director once told me, several years ago I hasten to add, that apart from the zombies, Dundee and St. Mirren were the only two teams in the country that wouldn’t do business with us, I know some may quote Tommy Coyne but apart fae being billy cotton with them he was also the exception tae the rule.

The Big Mhan advocated a reserve player of the year award, the only stipulation was that it had tae be a genuine reserve and no a first team player recovering from injury or who had been dumped tae the “stiffs” as a result of form loss or disciplinarian reasons.

A young Dundee player won it in its first 2 seasons. Jock coveted this player and tried tae sign him on several occasions, nae chance, he was eventually sold tae the sheep. He did finally arrive at Parkheid where he was the last Celtic manager tae win the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year award.

He strived earlier tae sign another dens park midfielder, he also went tae the pen instead but we eventually signed him fae there.

They were always the hun team in the City of Discovery and it was no secret that some of their players loved belting out the Cadbury’s Smash in the bathtub after a game much to the chagrin of the token casey affleck players in the side.

There was no love lost between the sides and that goes back as far as 1948 when their players were on a massive bonus to win and help relegate us.

In November 1961 Celtic supporters rampaged through Dundee, story at the time was a young Celtic supporter who had been arrested was found dead in the cells. It made the front pages with the headlines “Celtic Fans Riot in Dundee”.

But that was long ago and far away you may say. Not so as it’s only just over 4 years ago that they were screaming about “a throwback to the 70s” when a “riot” ensued on Boxing Day when we were the visitors.

Allegedly 70 visiting supporters were engaged in a running battle, the worse seen by the hundee spokesman, a former deid team employee, in over 20 years In reality there were only 5 arrests, one ironically being a home supporter but that didn’t stop them bad mouthing us.

I hope they get relegated via a playoff against the Dundee Hibs.

  3. If Leicester can get to the quarter finals I see absolutely no reason why we can’t do it. Hope Leicester enjoy the next 45 minutes because it will be a cold day in hell before they appear at this level again

  4. Celtic are every bit as good a side as Leicester they got a handy group in the Champions League.

  5. THETIMREAPER

Gerrard and Rio just being consistent with crap English performances in this years champions league.

  6. I marvel at watching Atleti. The sum of the team is more than the parts themselves although the players are of high quality. Superb outfit.

  7. !!Bada Bing!! on

I was heartily bored with the Leicester stuff before they won it, but it showed up a shite team in a shite league

the numbers show there is bias in the award of injury time in games involving newhun where they are winning in comparison to games involving newhun when they are drawing or losing in the spfl 2017.This is undeniable by any professional measure. It’s not a big leap jump to conclude there is also bias in non measurable judgements.

  9. So you’ll fully understand when the board knock back a move to a shite league when they inevitably invite us down

    FRANK GALLAGHER – GREENOCK SHAMROCK.

Having to travel up and down along East Hamilton street and Rue End Street these last fews weeks allways makes the image of Frank coming out of United Mollases along there and up to Morton Terrace. Bright blue boilers, donkey jakit with a shoulder of orange, a bunnet on and his trademark mario brothers hair and moustache.

Frank missed Lisbon because as a young man he followed his sweetheart to america or australia and got conscripted into the amry, and actually sent to vietnam.

He told me he heard of the score via a helicopter radio and the bbc world-service.

I miss him a lot, a man of faith, I am sure he will hear the prayer and be happy with sean.

    God bless him.

  12. on Lisbon,

how envious I am of the supporters who are making the trip. Much the same as supporters who couldnt go in 67 must have felt,

but, bring back the trophy bhoys.

  13. Aggregate 3-2 1-1 on the night. Good game to watch

OOPs 1-2 on the night 3-3 agregate

  14. any info on current scam calls re Celtic shares – elderly parents called from person unknown re shares – mother just deflected saying the old fella not available so caller not given chance to elaborate – my intuition scam and advised the same but any further info welcome….

  15. Hope someone signs Griezman. So we can watch him in the Premier League. I presume the TV guy means the English one.

  16. Another Champions league ref highlighting how corruption has ruined the once beautiful game.

His career path will continue upwards as he did his paymasters bidding.

  17. Not only was the Red Card a travesty, the twat of a Ref has spoiled a fantastic match.Just what did he see there to make that decision.

  18. Aye Aye

The Madristas must have doubled the refs money after he awarded Bayern the penalty then quadrupled it when he allowed the og to stand
