CELTIC SWITCH PLANS FOR GIBRALTAR TIE

CELTIC will avoid a crazy 24-hour turnaround in Glasgow after a quick change in travel plans.

The champions will now fly directly to Gibraltar from Slovenia for Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier against Lincoln Red Imps.

Provisionally scheduled to jet back from their four-game pre-season tour of Slovenia and Austria immediately after tomorrow night’s friendly against NK Maribor, they’ve been forced to instigate a contingency plan.

The Hoops initially planned for a victory by the Estonian champions, who were odds-on favourites, which would have set up a Wednesday night clash in Tallinn. However, their first competitive game of the campaign will now take place on The Rock 24 hours earlier.

Instead of touching down in Glasgow in the early hours of Sunday morning, then flying out again the next day, players will now stay an extra night in Maribor before making a leisurely trip to Gibraltar on Sunday – always scheduled to be a recovery day.Brendan Rodgers said: “We’ve had to think about it carefully, about what makes most sense. Knowing we will be going to Gibraltar meant it didn’t make sense to go back to Glasgow for an extra stop-off.

“We want to do what we think is best for the team, in terms of our preparation. So, we’ll go straight to Gibraltar.”

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell added: “It is a contingency plan that we had ready, depending on the draw. When we found out that we were going out to Gibraltar next, we put that plan in place. The team will be going straight there from Maribor. It makes sense.”
