CELTIC target Romaine Sawyers has been the subject of a failed £2.2million bid from West Brom.

Brentford rejected the offer from their Championship rivals for their midfielder and captain who has been tracked by Hoops boss Neil Lennon throughout the summer.

New Hawthorns manager Slaven Bilic, who took over in the summer, is likely to come back with an enhanced proposal for the 27-year-old who started his career at the Midlands outfit as a trainee.

Sawyers was allowed to leave to join Walsall in 2013 after failing to make a solitary first team appearance for the Baggies. He joined the Bees at the end of his contract three years later and has 12 months to run on his current deal.

He is seen as a priority signing for the former Everton, West Ham and Croatia international gaffer as he attempts to get the team back to the top flight.

The Hoops had a reported bid of £1.5million knocked back last month and may yet come back a renewed submission.
