Celtic targeting the young player demographic

219

Notwithstanding the fact that we have only completed two Bosman transfers from Sheffield Wednesday, there is a consistency between them and the plethora of under contract players we have been linked with.  They are in their late teens or early 20s, everyone with growth potential.

Given the season just ended that strategy feels like it would have been a good idea 12 months ago.  Then, we signed David Turnbull from that demographic, although it would be half a season before he was properly introduced in the first team.  Risks about whatever way you spend your money but this strategy should always be high on the agenda.

100% spot on….we are a shambles. From coaching recruiting to scouting….all looks like a big fail next season. I’ve renewed but have said if things don’t change it will be my last.

    The magnificent Peter Lawwell’s legacy.

    Destroyed us from within.

Some on here still praise him.

  3. Ibrox ‘snapping up’ another player right at the opening of the window – what’s new?

Let’s face it over the last ten years they have brought in a load of rubbish, in fairness they were only shopping in ‘jumble sales’ for seven of those years. We have also caught some garbage in our ‘net’, but have had some spectacular successes.

However they are always very quick off the mark and do their business early – with the exception of Kent, who was a last-minute signing – we normally don’t.

It looks like they will be ready to hit the ground running with a settled squad with a few additions – we need to somehow match them from the start. If they get an easy early lead they will be difficult to catch.

    Uncomfortable truths or comforting lies?

  5. We appoint a manager and for a short period the blog has a positive air to it – but wait a minute – before we play our first friendly it’s back to doom and gloom.

Some may say it’s realism – for me it’s more defeatist.

Everything you say is correct. The gap between them and us will disappear with two CL qualifications, maybe even just one. I mentioned the same scenario on here a month or two back and was labelled a ‘defeatist hun’.

If we don’t appreciate the strength & possible future position of our only rival, we are burying our heads in the sand.

This time last season with a quadruple(almost) treble winning squad in tact & our manager about to be given c£20m to strengthen, the overwhelming consensus was that 10iar was “in the bag”.

Bad buys, bad loans, bad player attitude, bad political & SFA decisions against us……and here we are!

The difference in prize money between CL and Europa League qualification unlikely to be any more than £15m. Most likely a couple of million less.

Tiny Tim is consistent when he posts and always a good read, whether I agree or not.

Now that the visiting CQN rageoholics have calmed down at the loss of ten, and then Eddie Howe, it’s left to those that support and move on with Celtic to the next chapter. Qualification to CL never set Celtic apart from Rangers and it didn’t with Sevco either, so it won’t be the end of Celtic, should Sevco manage to beat a seeded side. Dave King for one, is due his family fortune back next year? certain players are permanently for sale.

A Scandinavian player in the past would aspire to playing for Celtic, now players like Ajer want the real big money. Good signing for Celtic, where we are in the middle level, developing players like Eddy and Ajer who’ll not be forever satisfied with Wednesday nights at Dingwall is inevitable. But there are great players for Celtic to sign, 15K – 20K is still in the fantasy money league, and we need to find them, like we have before.

I’m looking forward to more great signings David Turnbull, Ismaila Soro, Stephen Welsh et all. Many more to come with the vast kitty, we’ve built, that allows us to be the only club that reliquinishes taking up government loans to quell Covid.

I relish a challenge from any new club, especially one built only on sand, with sweat and bigotry.

When you calculate the revenue generated by either the CL, or, the EL, you MUST factor in ticket sales for home games.

Three pre-group qualifiers with full-houses/hospitality & three group matches with full-house/hospitality should bring in c£15m.

Add in basic £20m to reach CL groups – say £5m in points money and another £5m from the TV pool. – not difficult to see where a figure of £40/£45 million can be earned.

Europa League pays basic c£3m to reach groups, so around 15% of CL. If we apportion points & pool money on a 15% pro-rata basis, then EL would return around c£2m.

So assuming that rounds and group games are played to full-houses – revenue could be around £40/45 million for CL & around £20 million for EL.

The game is being shown in a few pubs in Clydebank on Wednesday.

That maybe suggests that it is being televised in Scotland on Celtic TV.

Pubs don’t risk showing illegal stream games anymore. Too many been caught.

When you calculate the revenue generated by either the CL, or, the EL, you MUST factor in ticket sales for home games.

Not if you’re comparing income from the Europa and the CL which you did when you talked about 40m shot in the arm and TinyTim talked about a 45m advantage.

We sell 10,000 more tickets when we both sell out, they won’t be able to charge much more for their CL tickets should they get there than last season

Fag packet calculation but after associated costs they’ll probably make 10m more than last season. Which is about the difference in commercial revenue between the two clubs.

All calculations based on published annual accounts and official Uefa distribution documents.

Look up the Uefa distributions document. You’re miles out, they won’t make 20m from distributions. Possibly 13m difference between Europa league and CL participation.

  19. TINYTIM on 5TH JULY 2021 3:52 PM

You make some good points. I agree celtic are slow of the ground and that sevco seem to get deals done quicker. I dont know why there is a lack of speed and preparation in our purchases.

They generally look at more experienced players than us too. We seem to look for profile players I.e. younger internationals and experienced loans. I dont mind the the type we sign just the slow pace. Experience is over rated. Denayer and and dijk were far better than most experienced players I have seen in the hoops.

Re: champions league, it is not worth 45 million pounds. More likely worth around 30 millions tops and then you need to deduct europa league income as that has made them about 15-20 million per season so it’s more like a 10 million swing.

Finally it seems you’ve already thrown in the towel.

Celtic need to get the feel good factor going and that is best done by bringing in some good players.

  20. Garry, I share your optimism about Ange. How we are in this monumentally bad state currently is very hard to explain.

The new gaffer deserves time to get our team playing as a Team first and foemost and hopefully we will really kick on then.

    ——-

OK – your figures make sense too. However, I fear there will be no capacity crowds for Europe this year. In that case let’s ignore the match-day revenue.

If they qualify for CL and we qualify for EL, revenue would be c£30m & £5m respectively – that’s a £25m gap.

  22. JHB,

Remember the huns will need to pay back a > £3 loan from the government.

So much for the fabled rebuild. The PLC doubling down as a commodity management enterprise.

Imagine persuading 50K+ to pay to watch a glorified youth team get pummelled in Europe and humped (again) by Sevco? You have to admire their chutzpah.

Throw in some cheap words about one club since 1888 and the mugs will ignore WHAT YOU’RE ACTUALLY DOING. I suspect that was Lawwell’s handover note to Dom.

Sevco had a 20 million deficit this tax year which includes a very good run in europa league.

Celtic had 20 million + in the bank without government loan.

So that is a 43 million difference right there in celtics favour. Where is the positivity about that? Remember that is money at bank no ifs buts or maybe, not dependent on qualifying for champians league, not 5 million game win bonuses or overheads for player bonuses etc.

Sevco are all in and celtic are still balancing the books.

Let’s judge where both are based on current and actual situation rather than fairytales, aye

The figures, imo, would support C40Me’s argument. The only guarantee is around €15M per group stage participant. Performance bonuses, for wins and draws, are not guaranteed, while the coefficient pool favours higher ranked clubs than Sevco, who are currently 85th (we are 34th). The market pool, in the UK, sees relatively small amounts going to Scottish teams.

Including match revenue is a bit of red herring since even Sevco will only charge a premium on CL games of 10-20% compared with EL games.
