Celtic, the Bank of England of investment opportunities

595

Celtic are an astonishing 1/200 to win the Premiership this season; 11 games into a 38 game competition. 1/200 isn’t betting odds, it’s a borrowing strategy. The bookies are borrowing money at 0.5% for six months, an annual rate of 1%. Try borrowing at better rates than that.

Investors get a 1% tax free savings rate, which is also competitive, although they don’t get access to their money for six months without significant penalty. If borrowing rates were higher, returns offered on Celtic would improve to attract more investors. The Scottish Premiership has jumped from being a sporting event to being an investment opportunity less volatile than gold or property.

The 10 point gap between Celtic and second placed Aberdeen is the same 10 points as between Aberdeen and bottom club Ross County. We are metaphorically in a different league than even our closest challengers.

Question is, how did Celtic become the Bank of England of football? It’s not just because they are financially responsible with appropriate oversights, this helps. More importantly, they have used their financial strength to fortify the competitive product on the park. Others have been in similar situations in previous decades without the oversight, which led to enormously entertaining failure.

It might look like Brendan Rodgers has achieved alchemy over a sleeping dinosaur, but he’s only part of the story, albeit an important part. Much of the groundwork was in place when he arrived. Nine of those who started the League Cup semi-final were at the club last season, they were just not nearly as effective.

Brendan’s building on rock solid foundations. That’s what you need to build generations of domination.

  1. A cabal of cartoonists across the globe are rejoicing at the news from the USA.

Creators of the Simpsons are planning a 4 year episode,, while in England ‘Trumpton’ is set for a revival, while across the Rio Tweed in Glasgow, sketchwriters are already at work on “Debbie does Donald in the Shite House”.

I have only one immediate concern, not particularly because of any antipathy I have to the man with the initials DT – America deserves whoever it chooses as does the world for putting them on the pedestal – but I worry that the upsurge in racial tension and violence witnessed here after the Brexit vote coudl be seen as a textbook exercise in international tolerance in comparison to the extreme side of the USA realises the carte blanche they have been given to demonstrate their patriotism…..with their ‘right to bear arms’.

    I really hope I’m wrong….

Maybe the constitution was just drafted wrong…maybe it was a supposed to reflect the Glasgow ‘taps aff’ duty, and was supposed to say “The right to bare arms”

“I urge all British young men and women to study closely the progress of the Nazi regime in Germany. They must not be misled by the misrepresentations of its opponents. The most spiteful detractors of the Nazis are to be found in precisely the same sections of the British public and press as are most vehement in their praises of the Soviet regime in Russia. They have started a clamorous campaign of denunciation against what they call “Nazi atrocities” which, as anyone who visits Germany quickly discovers for himself, consists merely of a few isolated acts of violence such as are inevitable among a nation half as big again as ours, but which have been generalized, multiplied and exaggerated to give the impression that Nazi rule is a bloodthirsty tyranny.”

  9. My prediction is that Trump may never be inaugurated, and if he is it will be a short lived Presidency. He is not cut out for politics, the enormity of the reality has aged Obama incredibly, and this was a vocation for Obama.

The razzmatazz of campaigning is not the reality of power and responsibility on this scale. A wee bit like that clown Gordon Smith being SFA Chief Exec, multiplied by a couple of billion.

To come to this with no political experience – and crucially without the backing of much of the Republican party – is just not a gap that can be bridged without him either buckling, or doing something so incredibly stupid it has worldwide consequences and despite the nonsense I don’t actually think he would deliberately do that or in fact be allowed to. He’s a showman, a misogynist, a pretty vile personality, but I don’t think he’s a psychopath. I may be wrong. He’ll be thwarted by career Republicans. The enemy within. Republicans now hold sway at all levels of US politics. They’ll be plotting right now for one of their own to supersede Trump and take advantage of the power.

Trump will exit stage left claiming to have done what he came to do and leave another Republican to take the flack for not delivering. America will plunge into schism. Michelle Obama will win in 2020 with a 15% turnout of the electorate as most are at home defending their property with their right to bear arms protected by the constitution, protecting it from phantom Mexican and Muslim looters who do not exist but were created and the myth perpetuated by Murdoch’s media. The Yellowstone super volcano will become active and we’ll all be dead, or wish we were, in 2022, with Moussa Dembele wondering what could have been now that he has been nominated for his 5th Balon D’or.

  12. Dont often agree with Ernie but he was bang on earlier when he said Putin would be happy.

Putin will be happy. He does not want war,and neither does Trump. One thing about this presidency,it will get things done. The Senate,The House, all Republican run.In his speech this morning he made it clear he wants to work with Russia on the Syrian shambles.Talk is good.

Personally,I will wait and see how it pans out.Too many melodramatic drama queens, having their say.

Instead of concerning themselves with America, better they should worry about their own country. We now have a government that are talking about cutting the increases in old age pensions as “Unaffordable”.Have not the first idea how to go about Brexit, which the British electorate were led into through bare faced lies by people who have now fled the coop.An arrogant twat of a PM leading the country.

This morning I dont think the world is a worse off place.I would not be saying that if Clinton had been elected.

Can a non elected prime minister sit in the Houses of Parliament?

    MWD

    ________________________________________________

Yep; the PM is the First Lord of The Treasury and can come from the House of Lords. There is no modern day precedent for a PM not being a Member of The Houses of Parliament (MP or Lord), but in theory, it could happen if a Party Leader lost their seat.

Much of the British Constitution is what is termed “Constitutional Convention” so precedent can change it. Although the Sovereign nominally holds power, most of the Royal Prerogatives are exercised by the PM.

It’s a very strange (but, IMHO) fascinating subject.

    THETIMREAPER on 9th November 2016 10:59 am

Just trying to clarify; although there are exceptions to the rule that traditionally Party leaders become Prime Minsters. Neither David Lloyd George or Ramsay MacDonald were Party leaders when the served as PM. The convention now is that the Sovereign now asks Party leader from the Party likely to control the House of Commons (majority or coalition) to take the role of PM

  14. Should there be any confusion to how much of an anti establishment figure Re-Don is lets look at the team’s putting together…

“the Trump transition team is a who’s who of influence peddlers, including: energy adviser Michael Catanzaro, a lobbyist for Koch Industries and the Walt Disney Company; adviser Eric Ueland, a Senate Republican staffer who previously lobbied for Goldman Sachs; and Transition General Counsel William Palatucci, an attorney in New Jersey whose lobbying firm represents Aetna and Verizon. Rick Holt, Christine Ciccone, Rich Bagger, and Mike Ferguson are among the other corporate lobbyists helping to manage the transition effort.”

He doesn’t want war with the US. But he wouldn’t mind some little local wars if his neighbours resist his expansionist policies. That’s why he’ll be happy at Trump’s victory.

I stand corrected. I forgot that Alec Douglas-Home resigned his Peerage to stand for election as an MP in ’63 because it was seen as unacceptable to have the PM in the Lords.

Ernie, at least one of us should be worried this morning; that’s a couple of your posts I’ve agreed with this morning!

Re: the PM sitting in The Commons or The Lords – it can be either though as APRICALE pointed out, when Macmillan took ill and Douglas-Home was selected as PM in 1963 it was frowned upon that he was in the Lords (no PM had been in the Lords since 1902 I think) so he renounced his Peerage and stood as an MP. There is no Constitutional requirement for this though.

  18. Ernie, they may be no great fans of Trump, but that was before he won.Its still better to have the whole shebang ,Republican or Democrat.

As I said,I have really no idea how it will all pan out,but the threat of war,IMHO has been averted.Lets see how he and Putin get on.

  19. Anyway, enough of politics for me,A wee beauty from Hun media today.Remember last season when the chant was”Waggers for England”.Well now he is a useless numpty, and GTF seems to be the new chant. One poster, they seem to have quite a few special needs posters on there, has stated,

“Get him tae F in January and take the couple of million we will get for him”.

Others saying that now Joey is going that will “Free up his wages”and they can use this money in January.

Do you think we should tell them that Joey will still be getting his wages,in a lump sum?.

    Nah.

  20. My dismay at Trump winning is slightly offset by knowing Clinton didn’t.

I hope enough is learned from this to mean in 4 years the Democrats will choose a Bernie type as their candidate rather than another establishment lackey.

It’s a sad day when most people were hoping for the candidate they least detested to win rather than one they liked, shows the paucity of the political arena since the moneymen became it’s power. The ordinary folk have no faith in it anymore, there’s a disconnect.

I don’t think anybody wins here but I do think Clinton winning would’ve been a bigger loss.

Unfortunately that means a complete dick has succeeded.A lose-lose situation, not much too be happy about.

Also,is there any point to polls now?
