Celtic to the core, Graves and your role

693

Several years ago, long before CQN, I was fortunate enough to be in the company of 10 of the 11 Lions who took the field in Lisbon.  It was a great to see them interact with each other.  A grinning Jinky walked in late, “Am I in trouble again?”, bringing a playful shout from all the others.

I’ve since met the rest of the squad who didn’t make the field, but Willie Wallace remained an unknown quantity, until this week.  I occasionally wondered what role Celtic played in the life of a man who left for Australia circa 40 years ago.

As anyone who read Willie on the blog this morning will realise, he was cut from the same wood as the rest of the team, with a deeply set Celtic grain.  When I met him on Saturday he had all the playfulness and spirit the other Lions had, but there was no hiding his sharp competitive edge when talk go around to matters on, and sometimes, off, the field.

Many thanks for chatting this morning, Willie.

If you can make it to Waterstones in Stirling tomorrow evening (late night shopping), I’ll be there with Willie, who will be signing copies of Heart of a Lion.  See you there.

I missed out on the preparations and commemorations yesterday by Celtic Graves and so many Celtic fans.  Caught up with it late in the day online.  Things about this club blow you away sometimes.  I know there is some traceable linage from Celtic Graves, though Jungle Bhoys and all the way back to Celts for Change.  With supporters like this, your club is in incredibly good hands.

At any other club these events would be remarkable.  At Celtic, they are just another chapter in a very special story.

Which takes me onto the next point………

All of these great things are underpinned by you, me and thousands of others buying season tickets each year, no matter who survives long enough to compete in the league, no matter how many times newspapers try to tell you Everton want (and will get) Neil Lennon, no matter if we win, lose or draw.

The Jungle Drums tell me sales are up on the equivalent period last year, which is great news, but it is absolutely necessary.  I want to see Celtic back in the Champions League next season, competing as effectively as they did last season.  I want to see us mature the development strategy which is already delivering such bounty.

This is your club, claim your seat and make it happen.

Stunning response to our ebay raffle and auction.  Sincere thanks to those who bought tickets and bid.  You have two days to buy a ticket for the framed Celtic top signed by the Seville squad, and a few days more for the signed and framed Messi top……..

Heart of a Lion available below, or see you at Waterstones, Stirling tomorrow evening (times will be confirmed tomorrow).

Aye he would be much better off playing for a wee club like Newcastle scrabbling around the nether regions of the EPL!!

He would be much better being 3rd choice keeper for a team scrambling to avoid relegation…

Anyone read Kevin McCarra’s – “Celtic – a biography in Nine lives”?

Was just about to download it, but thought I’d check if it’s worth reading.

    Anyone?

    Union Bears Statement

    Rangers Board,

The Union Bears would like to make clear that we unequivocally back Walter Smith’s position on the club’s board of directors.

Furthermore we will stand firmly behind anyone else that Walter Smith believes is working on the board in the best interests of our football club.

We’d also like to clarify that we would oppose the return of Charles Green to our football club in any capacity.

If Walter Smith or any of the those referenced above are forcibly removed from the board of directors we will have no option but to consider our options for the season ahead.

I’d like to like Newcastle. I have friends from there. Good people. But there really does seem to be a hu**ish element still that pervades down there years since Souness and that wee scumbag Lovenkrands departed.

Don’t think Mr Forster will regret his move up north. HH.

I’ve read it and really enjoyed it. The quality of McCarra’s writing shines through so I’d say it’s worth downloading.

I know a lot of Newcastle fans who have no real interest of Scottish football ( I don’t care about the EPL ) but they are happy to chat away. Never had any grief about Celtic but there does seem to be a negative element on one website.

  12. Another great day on cqn. Thanks to paul67 winning captains for organising this.

Gutted i couldnt get book with signature as currently outta work.

Once i get work i’ll be buying the book along with £50 kano foundation season ticket.

As paul67 said its upto everyone to try fill parkhead next season, hopefully the drop in price ,kids ticket and also the new match day entertainment we can have paradise jumping.

I for one would give anything to just see celts once live next year.

    My day will come again.

    Keep the faith

  13. Hail Hail Kano – I think we might have met in Australia? I know your story as does every Celtic fan and you are as much a legend as any of the Lions! Hope you are keeping well and remember Keep the Faith. Hail Hail to you Kano from Willie Wallace and family. I have signed a book especially for you so please make sure Paul has your address and the boys will post it out to you.

  14. There are so many anomalies concerning registration, signing embargos, “not gaining an advantage” etc, but what links them all is that the interpretation always seems to have a positive outcome for one club.

The rules only seem to bend one way.

I despair that we will ever see the football authorities just do what is right and not what they want to be right.

When will the pre-ordered WW books be dispatched ??

I’m sure this more than Martin could have dreamed of and has probably given him the biggest boost that he has had this year.

It appears that Mr Wallace, like the few Lions that I’ve had the good fortune to meet, is a very special human being.

A couple of months ago I wanted Ogilvie, Regan and Doncasters heads on a plate after the contrived and illogical LNS decision.

The language is symbolic in that it is not so much the personnell I want to change but the whole SFA culture as there is no guarantee Ogilvie would not be replaced by Peat. I still think that culture change is absolutely essential for the well being of Scottish football as a whole, indeed it is getting harder to tell when one gang of spivs starts and another ends.

I hope that Celtic and other men of honour in our game are working on culture change but I have come to recognise that unhappy as I am about the character of those in charge, witholding my financial support for Celtic is not going to help Celtic.

Thus I renewed my Overseas Season Book as I’m off again after what masquerades in Scotland as summer is over. There are many overseas users of CQN and if they use Celtic TV already then for around another £100 a year they can buy someone else less fortuneate a seat in their place and attend up to 4 home games if they visit the UK.

I am still as determined as ever on SFA reform and am hoping that the unfolding debacle over Sevco and the SFAs part in it will cause a core rethink on the viability of the Scottish football business model. In some ways that process is taking on a life of its own outside football, which is probably the only way true reform will happen anyway.

So following my own advice of letting the river flow by itself I am not making my support of Celtic conditional on SFA reform and look forward to ongoing support whilst enjoying the view of the flowing river, hopefully washing all before it, whilst throwing in the odd chuckie stone to see how many skims I get.

Given Sevco cannot return til 2016 ( and might not even then) I might as well enjoy the novelty of football without the angst. Who knows we might all come to enjoy it.
