Celtic to the core, Graves and your role

693

Several years ago, long before CQN, I was fortunate enough to be in the company of 10 of the 11 Lions who took the field in Lisbon.  It was a great to see them interact with each other.  A grinning Jinky walked in late, “Am I in trouble again?”, bringing a playful shout from all the others.

I’ve since met the rest of the squad who didn’t make the field, but Willie Wallace remained an unknown quantity, until this week.  I occasionally wondered what role Celtic played in the life of a man who left for Australia circa 40 years ago.

As anyone who read Willie on the blog this morning will realise, he was cut from the same wood as the rest of the team, with a deeply set Celtic grain.  When I met him on Saturday he had all the playfulness and spirit the other Lions had, but there was no hiding his sharp competitive edge when talk go around to matters on, and sometimes, off, the field.

Many thanks for chatting this morning, Willie.

If you can make it to Waterstones in Stirling tomorrow evening (late night shopping), I’ll be there with Willie, who will be signing copies of Heart of a Lion.  See you there.

I missed out on the preparations and commemorations yesterday by Celtic Graves and so many Celtic fans.  Caught up with it late in the day online.  Things about this club blow you away sometimes.  I know there is some traceable linage from Celtic Graves, though Jungle Bhoys and all the way back to Celts for Change.  With supporters like this, your club is in incredibly good hands.

At any other club these events would be remarkable.  At Celtic, they are just another chapter in a very special story.

Which takes me onto the next point………

All of these great things are underpinned by you, me and thousands of others buying season tickets each year, no matter who survives long enough to compete in the league, no matter how many times newspapers try to tell you Everton want (and will get) Neil Lennon, no matter if we win, lose or draw.

The Jungle Drums tell me sales are up on the equivalent period last year, which is great news, but it is absolutely necessary.  I want to see Celtic back in the Champions League next season, competing as effectively as they did last season.  I want to see us mature the development strategy which is already delivering such bounty.

This is your club, claim your seat and make it happen.

Stunning response to our ebay raffle and auction.  Sincere thanks to those who bought tickets and bid.  You have two days to buy a ticket for the framed Celtic top signed by the Seville squad, and a few days more for the signed and framed Messi top……..

Heart of a Lion available below, or see you at Waterstones, Stirling tomorrow evening (times will be confirmed tomorrow).

Nags? So so . Got myself some shares in another 2 horses last month, which I went to see on the gallops last weekend. Was great to be involved again.

Looking at buying into another one from Ireland which will be coming up in the sales next month. It’s one that we hope will make at least one of the festivals next spring.

    Will mail you later.

We are meeting up in Hamilton (evening meeting) on Sat 13th July. As always, it would be a pleasure to see you there.

  4. A special word of praise to the Celtic Graves Society who do a marvelous job in identifying and helping to maintain the final resting place of so many Celts.

Iv been same as you, totally scunnered with sfa, zombies and also with celtic board silence and treatment of GB.

But not supporting celtic financially will only hurt the fans in the long run.

What way does celtic tv work ? And how much ?

Will i be able to watch the games live online …what if its on too late or im out ln the razzle ? Can i just log in and watch it day or 2 later.

I think i will decline the celtic overseas book as its too much for me on top of setanta and celtic tv but i will buy kano foundation season book at £50 once i start working again.

Tonev is close to a deal with Scottish side

    Celtic, according to reports.

Even though a number of clubs, including

Lazio, Fiorentina and Malaga, are said to

be interested in the 23- year- old , Tonev has

spoken openly about his desire to move to

    Parkhead .

    “ It’ s important I consistently play

    Champions League football, Celtic is

somewhere I could achieve that ,” he said, as

    cited by Daily Record.

Tonev ’s agent Terence Chongwa confirmed

the story , adding: “There is definite interest

in Scotland. We can confirm scouts of Celtic

have been to our games this season.

“ We are holding a meeting tomorrow and

Aleksandar ’s position could become clearer

    then .”

Reports say that Tonev may also be

tempted to move to German side Werder

    Bremen.

  9. To all those ‘celebrating’ their wedding anniversaries today – or yesterday in the case of BT(?) – my commiserations! Only joking!

I will celebrate my 20th in October. Where does the time go?!

I held off as long as I could, but if it had been down to my late mother I would probably be celebrating my 35th this year!

Hope Mrs Tally is not lurking! She wont be – but Ms Tally might!

  10. Since Willie Wallace is our man of the moment I thought i would share a memory with you

I had been to a few Celtic under the watchful eye of my Dad, but the first game I got to on my own was against Partick Thistle in the League Cup at CP and we won 4-0

Willie scored all 4 goals that day and I went home a very happy Bhoy.

    HAIL HAIL KANO

Must be seven years or so ago now when Paul called me and asked if I fancied coming over for a couple of drinks as his brother Martin was passing through on his way back to Australia……… Asked Paul if it was a party but he said ‘no, just a Sellik gathering’ So V and ‘me’ headed out to Mirdiff……. Expected a party type crowd but there was just a ‘select’ gathering, and it worked well………. It was late by the time we got there but it was daylight by the time we left the next morning. More on that later……….

Introductions were made – I had met Matt (Paul’s and Martin’s Dad ( God Rest his soul)) on numerous occasions but had never met Martin, Carolyn or their kids prior to that night. Nonetheless, soon settled in the company and Martin says ‘where’s your drink?’ when Paul interjects ‘it’s chilling, be poured in a minute or two’ Suddenly Martin roars ‘No feckin way, no you an aw’………… I’m like, whit???

‘Is that a pint of red wine you’ve goat there?’

Sheepishly I said ‘aye but I’ll only have a couple’……

Martin then starts to tell me of his great pal in Oz who also shares/shared my liking for said tipple……..

CQN comes up in the course of the conversation ‘so who are you then? Naw no The Barca Mole guy that does the Dubai Hoops website, you’re nuts’…

’awe naw you’re no Kano, you’re an argumentative bassa’

We talked about the Celtic, golf, family, the Lions, friends – especially Ramie and the red wine – Springburn, work on the house in OZ, EK, Dubai, and on on and on……… Bored, tired or a combination, Carolyn and the kids said goodnight and went to bed and V went to sleep on the sofa but Paul, Martin and me were still going strong as the sun came up…… Not sure but think their flight was later that day………

Much, much more to write on this and the events that overtook the convivial gathering referred but really the emotion is a bit raw so maybe just call this chapter one for now………….

Part two to follow one day……..

God Bless Kano, Carolyn and the weans……

BTW Ramie a big hello to you, just the one hello eh!

Me and the bunch who used to go to Kinsale for the last point to point of the season stopped last year. It was just after our big mate’s anniversary We raised our pints to him and decided there were too many memories about the place for it ever to be the same. Still have contacts with trainers/bookies etc but left the CQN naps competition early as I couldn’t back a book. Robert Tressel, if you’re in Belfast any weekend there’s a nice wee session in the Fountain bar in Fountain street you should try. I’m married over 40 years to the same woman and she still interferes in my private life. So keep going. Not too many weeks left until the first match of the season.
