Celtic to the core, Graves and your role

693

Several years ago, long before CQN, I was fortunate enough to be in the company of 10 of the 11 Lions who took the field in Lisbon.  It was a great to see them interact with each other.  A grinning Jinky walked in late, “Am I in trouble again?”, bringing a playful shout from all the others.

I’ve since met the rest of the squad who didn’t make the field, but Willie Wallace remained an unknown quantity, until this week.  I occasionally wondered what role Celtic played in the life of a man who left for Australia circa 40 years ago.

As anyone who read Willie on the blog this morning will realise, he was cut from the same wood as the rest of the team, with a deeply set Celtic grain.  When I met him on Saturday he had all the playfulness and spirit the other Lions had, but there was no hiding his sharp competitive edge when talk go around to matters on, and sometimes, off, the field.

Many thanks for chatting this morning, Willie.

If you can make it to Waterstones in Stirling tomorrow evening (late night shopping), I’ll be there with Willie, who will be signing copies of Heart of a Lion.  See you there.

I missed out on the preparations and commemorations yesterday by Celtic Graves and so many Celtic fans.  Caught up with it late in the day online.  Things about this club blow you away sometimes.  I know there is some traceable linage from Celtic Graves, though Jungle Bhoys and all the way back to Celts for Change.  With supporters like this, your club is in incredibly good hands.

At any other club these events would be remarkable.  At Celtic, they are just another chapter in a very special story.

Which takes me onto the next point………

All of these great things are underpinned by you, me and thousands of others buying season tickets each year, no matter who survives long enough to compete in the league, no matter how many times newspapers try to tell you Everton want (and will get) Neil Lennon, no matter if we win, lose or draw.

The Jungle Drums tell me sales are up on the equivalent period last year, which is great news, but it is absolutely necessary.  I want to see Celtic back in the Champions League next season, competing as effectively as they did last season.  I want to see us mature the development strategy which is already delivering such bounty.

This is your club, claim your seat and make it happen.

Stunning response to our ebay raffle and auction.  Sincere thanks to those who bought tickets and bid.  You have two days to buy a ticket for the framed Celtic top signed by the Seville squad, and a few days more for the signed and framed Messi top……..

Heart of a Lion available below, or see you at Waterstones, Stirling tomorrow evening (times will be confirmed tomorrow).

  2. Have been listening most of the day to Five Live and Talksport today. I know.

They have mentioned trouble at the last Ireland v England game in1995.

There has been no mention of what actually happened or who was to blame.

They fear songs like “no surrender to the IRA” will be sung. I fully expect the Famine Song to be given a blast also.

No doubt the crowd microphones will be muted this evening. Hope wee Nevin gets a spot in the media he might be able to speak out anytime he hears such songs.

Time for the Offensive Behaviour Law was rushed through Parliament.

Most of what England fans sing could be construed as offensive.

Eamon McMahon played as goalkeeper for Armagh in the 1953 All ireland final against Kerry in Croke Park in front of 91,000 spectators. Shortly afterwards he was signed for Celtic as a reserve keeper. I think he played just once for the first team. He died last year and is buried in his native Lurgan

RANGERS’ creditors face a further reduction in the money owed to them by the club after liquidator BDO and two law firms lodged a claim totalling nearly £1 million.

    • Rangers creditors face a reduction in the money they are owed after liquidator and law firms make claim

    • Creditor pot could be reduced by almost £1 million if application is successful

The trio of companies have made the bid after claiming five months’ worth of work for winding up the old company last year.

If the application is successful, it will reduce the creditors’ pot from £2.27 million to around £1.3 million.

The recovery of additional legal costs could see the amount left to creditors further reduced.

BDO was appointed to wind up the parent company behind the club, The Rangers Football Club plc, in October.

Duff and Phelps had presided over the club’s administration up until that point since February last year. After the rejection of a company voluntary agreement by HMRC, Duff & Phelps agreed a deal with a consortium led by Charles Green to sell the club’s assets for £5.5 million. The club was sent down to the Third Division last year, but won the title at the first attempt this season.

The liquidator is in line to receive £640,000 for its work, while law firms Brodies and Stephenson Harwood will take nearly £340,000.’

There’s a couple of issue here

    1. The standard of that report is lamentable. There was a time when both the Scotsman and the Herald were able to report legal/financial stories properly. Those days are gone.

    2. Insolvency practitioners appear to be a law unto themselves and it’s time judges started to query their accounts rather than sign them off as a matter of course ( I believe there are signs that might be starting to happen).

Celtic TV is delivered over the internet so you need reasonable quality broadband to get a watchable picture.

In Spain I was piggy backing on a neighbours network and was pleasantly suprised at the quality on screen. As I recall there is a test page at Celtic TV to see what quality you get before joining.

As Im in Uk at present I cannot tell you prices to overseas subscribers as I only see what is on offer to Uk residents but from memory the Overseas subs is around £140 for standard quality and £180 for higher ( but not HD) quality. The OSB comes in at £250 and with that you get standard quality thrown in.

What you might want to consider is why you use Setanta. If its to view other teams/ sports you want to watch then stick with it.

But if its only to watch Celtic in EVERY game ( and you get the full game after it is played as well as live) then ditch Setanta and save yourself a few bob.

That then makes the charity aspect via Kano or OSB a bit easier to make. The OSB is obviously more attractive to folk who can take up the 4 match attendance option. The key thing for me is to provide supporters with choices that suit their personal circumstances and the OSB is a move by Celtic in that direction. I am hoping that in time we will see more initiatives of this type as Celtic create the capacity (as they are doing ) to think outside the traditonal box.

Hasn’t been reported nationally, but Irish newspapers, and local papers like the Liverpool Echo, have flagged up the recent targeting of groups like Friends of Ireland, by the BNP and the EDL. Tonight’s game at Wembley, first since the infamous Landsdown Road disgrace back in 1995, seems to be attracting similar attention, leading to requests by both the FA and Roy Hodgson to avoid religious and political chanting during the game, requests that seem to have increased the possibility of said chanting actually happening. Would be a pity if the match gets caught up in an atmosphere not of its’ choosing, since if it does, I can see something similar occurring when Scotland play England at Wembley in August.

  26. Off the main theme I know, but I was thinking about a “Super European League”.

Let us say that the teams who finish 1st and 2nd in their respective leagues were put into a European League. So the winners and runners up are seconded to the Super Europe League. In order to remain there they have to finish above the team from their own country. Hope you are still with me here.

So, lets say Celtic finish higher than Motherwell for example would mean Motherwell go back to the SPL and the winner of the SPL would be promoted to the Euro League and the same criteria would apply with all the participating countries. I think this has got legs. Mssr Plattini are you listening!!!

  27. Rumours of Fraser Forster wanting to leave don’t bother me.

As long as we sell for the best price this is what the club has to do. Initially we thought Izzy and Kayal were worth millions but their value has reduced with time.

Fraser is a very good keeper but his form has been patchy since returning from injury.

Every player has a value and if we get the offer let them go.There is no player at the club that would really hurt me if they left.

Playing For Celtic Is Holding Forster Back!

    By Footy Mad – Editor

Is this the same site that keeps on posting anti Celtic stories? The only reason anyone’s heard of FF is cause he’s playing for us.

    _____________________________________________________________________

Aye, that’s the geordie feckwit (who claimed the big fella would NEVER sign for Celtic). Twitface now says that “The ‘One Club Scottish Premiership’ is not the place to be if you have big ambitions”. Oh yes, and not even getting on the bench for the comatose giants – no sign of a trophy of any sort for 44 years- was just the ticket for FF to get in the Englans side.
