Celtic turn up and lose: referee and a ricochet

465

While Celtic totally controlled the first half at Ibrox yesterday, Newco’s defence held firm and largely limited the visitors to shots from the edge of the area.  Leigh Griffiths’ effort from that distance was touched onto the post but over the 90 minutes there was not a single chance where an attacker from either team should have scored.

Steven Gerrard made changes at halftime that made marginally reduced Celtic’s advantage, but not so much as to permit his side an attempt on target, even after Celtic were reduced to 10 men.

Nir Bitton played well until his red card.  He and the impeccable Kristoffer Ajer brought authority and control to the game as they circulated the ball for Celtic.  A momentary lapse that allowed Alfredo Morelos to collect goal-side of him saw Bitton grapple his opponent to the ground.  Referee Bobby Madden waved his red card in a flash.

Morelos was in a wide position, Ajer, who had already demonstrated his pace by catching and overtaking Newco’s fastest player, Ryan Kent, was covering in a central position.  The Laws of the Game ask referees to make a judgement on whether he thinks the covering defender would be able to make up the ground, Madden decided to show Morelos the advantage.

Madden also showed Morelos the advantage five minutes into the game, when the Columbian stamped on Jeremie Frimpong’s Achilles in an off the ball incident.  Madden awarded Celtic a foul, but used his discretion to keep both cards in his pocket when many expected a red card.  The referee determined the outcome.

Celtic conceded fewer chances yesterday than in any game in months but the goal came from a familiar failing – corner kicks.  A ricochet struck Callum McGregor and flew past Vasilis Barkas, who had little else to do all afternoon.

The game was lost for a few reasons: despite our control of play, Newco’s defence stood firm, we did not get into the box or hit the bye-line often enough.  Bobby Madden had two decisions to make and you could bet your mortgage he was not making them in Celtic’s favour.  Despite the unfortunate nature of the own goal, we again conceded from a corner.

Had we lost and played in the manner we had in our previous three games against Newco the verdict would be straightforward: the better team won and is firm favourite to take the title.  I don’t think that is the case, instead, it has taken us until now to make the correct selection and formation decisions against them.

A must-win game was lost, leaving Celtic 19 points clear with three games in hand.  Newco are a club who find it difficult to get trophies over the line.  They are defensively solid, but I think their league position flatters them.  There is work to do for both teams.

PL really is the worst level of CEO — vain / stupid / greedy in equal measure.

if you look CEO up in a dictionary that will be the description

PL isnt any worse than any other CEO in other industries

only difference is that he wouldnt still be in the job in other industries with this level of decline

It’s only a decline if it’s not orchestrated

wasnt orchestrated as in he wanted it to happen

  5. Hi fellow Celts

It has just dawned on me that Madden restrained Morelos to stop him from attacking more Celtic players, thus forcing him to send him off.

    Is this not f##king incredible.for a referee

Also by grabbing him he must have known that he had already assaulted 2Celtic players requiring him to send off Morelos.

    Absolutely hunbelieveable.

Madden should be asked why he had to restrain him. His only answer could be that he thought Morelos was going to strike out.

If that is the case, is an INTENT to harm an opponent not a sending off?

    of course there are

because PL and DD will probably see it as a good thing to have a team playing out of ibrox going head to head for the league because its good for business

but i just cant go with the theory that PL/DD have deliberately allowed the latest team to play out of ibrox to win the league

I remember the joke at the time was that we were going to sign a german left sided midfield player called Schopes and the midfield was going to be Glavin Burns Schopes.

Morelas had a kick out at Ajer followed by a punch or slap which caught Brown on the mouth . Madden may have missed the first but certainly not the second . Usually a team mate will restrain a player who has lost the rag , so maybe Madden had a touch of role confusion .

  11. 3sy-the downsizing from the second BR left suggests it was orchestrated, maybe even coordinated 🤷🏽‍♂️

If it suits the agenda then anything is possible. Just look at the 5 way agreement, no comments on bad refereeing and so on.

Could it be it suits SCOTTISH football (and Dermot &Peter) for someone rather than Celtic to win the league?

Maybe just not so soon in the season

One of my mates, Frank Welsh, from St. Maggie May’s was Big Billy’s understudy and the rated reserve Centre Half to replace him.

Unfortunately he suffered a series of groin injuries that could not be diagnosed at the tiem and , after naming the treatment table after him , they shipped him off to Morton and Thistle.

That gave Roddy his chance, and I agree, he was a journeyman Centre Half. (I was at Uni at the time with one of Roddy’s ex-girlfriends from Inverness)

    ……………………

I know Frank Welsh’s wife fairly well as we are former colleagues. I’m fairly sure Frank had a fairly lengthy career with Kilmarnock.

  17. I really can understand that it suits Dermot and Peter for Sevco to win the league now and again, strictly in a business sense.

What I’ll NEVER understand is why were happy to settle for the Europa League rather than the champions league.

Year on year we wait til we’re knocked out before buying players that would increase our chances of qualifying. I’m not even asking to spend MORE money…..just spend it SOONER.

  27. Just watched the game then listened to our manager`s comments afterwards.

In my view,we were the better side and were unlucky not to have won the game so throwing blame about is pointless. If you NEED to apportion blame, blame the post and McGregor for stopping us from scoring and maybe blame Madden for his rather partial refereeing. I do believe the Red Card was wrong and I can only assume that Bitton felt it safe to pull Morelos down and take a yellow card for the team. If so, he is a slow learner re Scottish ref`s and their preferred team.

I thought Neil Lennon was calm, fair and accurate in his assessment of what had gone before.

Do I think we can still win the League? Obviously, we can but it is unlikely. On the other hand, if Sevco suffer the same misfortunes as we have done then the Title is still possible.I know the input of the Referees of Scotland will not dimish but bad luck has still to play its part for them,I retain hope in my heart.

A Bridge too Far – the end scene when the officers discuss just what effed up Monty’s grand plan. It was the fog, it was the narrow roads, it was unforeseen German troop movements prior to the operation, in the end they decided that Arnhem was just a bridge too far.

I can see Lawwell, Desmond and Lennon talking like this in the years ahead as they wash their hands off it all – it was closed door games, it was Boli, it was Madhun, in the end it was just a league title too far. Nothing to do with them…
