Celtic usual hectic international break avoided

166

For years Celtic players have had little let-up in their schedule during international breaks, so it was pleasing to see so few play a full 90 minutes over the weekend.  Four former Celtic players started for Scotland but Callum McGregor and David Turnbull were only used as substitutes.

Kyogo Furuhashi made a halftime appearance in Japan’s home defeat to Oman (Oh, man).  Nir Bitton got a valuable run out for Israel against Austria, while Liel Abada watched from the bench.  Tom Rogic got the full 90 minutes in Australia’s 3-0 win over China, which Carl Starfelt for the closing 30 minutes as Sweden beat Uzbekistan.

Those who have been in the squad since preseason should be fully fit and more in need of rest than game time.  Any reprieve in the autumn international breaks is welcome.

HRVATSKI JIM…thank you for your comment. I’ll pass it on to her. I mentioned in a previous post that originally the film was going to be a political look at water. However, in 2013 we travelled to the village of Ushguli, high up in the Greater Caucasus. There we filmed the start of the river Enguri which is formed from the melting glacier. It was an impressive sight and it was there my wife had her Damascus moment and decided it was going to be called Aquarela. It was now not about politics, it was all about the colour and power of water. (nothing to do with the fact we once had a dog called Aquarela 😊)

I think this equally applies to Mr Postecoglou who’s hopefully taken a well-earned rest to be with his fam, with wife and kids also acclimatising to a foreign country!!

Haven’t heard too much mumpin and moanin’ about our coaching staff now that on field shape, strategy and performances have picked up? Mibby Ange is happy enough to keep JK and Gavin on as his lieutenants after all.

Saw the highlights of the Colts v Morton; shambolic CB pairing of Ozace and a chunky looking unit from what was screened.

  5. I really hope we are at least trying to sell Bitton to an Israeli club before their deadline closes next week.

By all accounts he played really well in a back 3 for Israel against Austria (which might attract interest in him). I don’t think any Celtic fans would ever like to see him play in our defence again and he hasn’t had the legs for midfield since about 2017. If we could squeeze 1.5m for him and put it into the centre midfield January kitty that would be great!!

Hello, I live in Scotland. What does a green bin look like? Well, imagine a black bin that’s been painted green. It’s like that.

Sorry, I didn’t make myself clear. I’m a Council Leader, living in Scotland. What does green mean, exactly?

You don’t have the wherewithal to assess anyone’s intellect, so we’ll leave that to one side.

But on what basis are you calling me a liar?

  8. Morton manager, Gus MacPherson, made a few interesting comments after his side beat Celtic B on Saturday. Pretty much along the lines of why was the game being played on Airdrie’s plastic monstrosity of a pitch and not on a grass pitch, or even Celtic Park.

Along with many others, I was delighted that Killie and Hamilton got relegated, don’t have anything against either club, just their pitches. Just Livingston to negotiate this season.

If the whole point of a B side is player development, then why are they playing on plastic ? Is this something Gordon Strachan was looking at during his three week consultancy ?

Just a quick note about the backroom staff.

I wondered about the playing of Kyogo on the left and Odsonne through the middle and thought it was a mistake, as we all know “Eddie” can play wide left and some of his best goals have come from that position. So why did he go with it the way he did. My son said to me a couple of days ago that perhaps the backroom bhoys had suggested that Odsonne plays through the middle, as they had seen more derby games than Ange, he may have decided that their thoughts were relevant. Of course, Ange should have changed things a helluva lot sooner than he did, por cierto.

Wa at the game – just heading out so will do other comments later.

One thing – watching live, Urhoghide was the better of the centre backs. Liam Shaw did not look in the slightest interested – gave the impression of wanting to be elsewhere (probably in the first team). Played at about 60% capacity.

Wee number 9 for Celtic – rapid. Will try to find out his name later.

  13. Like many others I find these international breaks the most boring interludes in sport. In Scotland we had a “real’ generation of non-qualification for any international competition until we got in by the backest of back-doors at Euro ’20 by scoring one penalty more than Serbia. But of course we were kicked-out at the first possible opportunity and managed to score only a solitary goal during our brief stay on the ‘see you later’ conveyor-belt.

Our next opponents are Austria, a nation that withdrew from the World Cup qualifying procedure in 1962 because they judged that their team wasn’t good enough to compete and was causing embarrassment – perhaps we might profitably do the same?

  14. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Jimdom – with Killie and Hamilton gone, I believe it is now possible for Premiership clubs to ban them. Livingston would be forced to lay a grass pitch. Why this hasn’t been done is beyond me.

  15. Following on from my post yesterday about the disgraceful surface that the Celtic Ghirls had to play on yesterday, and reading JIMDOMS post about the plastic pitches the B team are playing on,just what is going on.We all know through painful experience the dire fare served up playing on these surfaces. The players hate it.

Waiting on a Movie last night,I watched the highlights of the English women’s league yesterday. All surfaces, manicured grass, and the standard was excellent. As usual,in Scotland, the whole set up is half assed.

    Just depressing.Always 2nd or 3rd rate.

  16. Blogger GM

The irony is that it will be away at Livingston which we all hope will produce Ange’s first away domestic win in 13 days time !

Hopefully the horrible rubber pellets play fair.

At least our fans will occupy 3 sides of the stadium and can help keep the energy tempo a bit faster than the pitch will by getting the ball back !

  17. TURKEYBHOY on 6TH SEPTEMBER 2021 1:36 PM

Point being that we can hardly condemn Livingston for having a plastic pitch when we’re asking our colts to play on one.

And presumably expect them to progress as footballers.

You’ve been calling me a pseud since I used the phrase ‘peripheral housing schemes.’

The allusion went over your head, which I found strange for someone who claims to be a Celtic supporter, but there we are.

You are of course the person who joked about making a killing from selling bananas to Celtic fans to throw at Mark Walters.

Maybe you are a Celtic fan, but if you are you’re a very peculiar one.

  19. POR CIERTO – sure is possible that John and Gav influenced Ange’s thinking but I dont feel AP is easily swayed or waylaid; course, in his firm local derby, perhaps he had more concern that usual.

BGFC – ta for the wider perspective. The highlights made Urhogide’s clearances look culpable. Too bad that Shaw’s not giving it a real go; he shoulda stayed away from Ntcham b4 he ‘graduated’ to Swansea.

  20. Cricket still easing itself into a really interesting final 5 hours.

The crowd really with the Indian team. Any breakthrough will test England’s resolve.

It is one sport where I am genuinely not hugely Partizan. I love the contest though. Usually root for the underdog.

Loved the Windies in the 70s and 80s though. Loved Sri Lanka winning the World Cup in the 90s. And Shane Warne is probably my all time cricket hero.

Warne is a good friend of Dermot Desmond son as is Michael Vaughan btw.

So a vague Celtic connection there.

    RANGERS PATERSON,

and during the game Billy Gilmour is known as the foremer rangers player.

    ralston is better than paterson.

gilmour is no where near Callum.

    delusional,
