Celtic usual hectic international break avoided

166

For years Celtic players have had little let-up in their schedule during international breaks, so it was pleasing to see so few play a full 90 minutes over the weekend.  Four former Celtic players started for Scotland but Callum McGregor and David Turnbull were only used as substitutes.

Kyogo Furuhashi made a halftime appearance in Japan’s home defeat to Oman (Oh, man).  Nir Bitton got a valuable run out for Israel against Austria, while Liel Abada watched from the bench.  Tom Rogic got the full 90 minutes in Australia’s 3-0 win over China, which Carl Starfelt for the closing 30 minutes as Sweden beat Uzbekistan.

Those who have been in the squad since preseason should be fully fit and more in need of rest than game time.  Any reprieve in the autumn international breaks is welcome.

  1. Young Welsh not in Europa A squad for upcoming games but Bitton is Dearie me, Dearie, Dearie me.

Bitton should be moved on ASAP. Welsh although young has stood up and been counted more than I can say of Bitton.

    D :)

  2. Nir Bitton apparently played a stormer for Israel against Austria the other night, lets hope he can do the same for us if and when big Ange selects him,

I’ve no problem trashing ex-Celtic players but not keen on trashing them whilst they are still playing for us.

  3. WEEBOBBYCOLLI S, thanks, got the link. Looking forward to sitting in my highland holiday house, surrounded by much water and darkness tonight and watching the film with a wee glass of golden watery stuff.

    Thanks

    Cheers for the reply.

I looked into buying them around the 0.08 mark (might even have been 0.04) but couldn’t get it on Coinbase so gave up 😬

Has the English passed passport vaccinations through parliament yet, if not don’t see how they can legally do that

  6. Just on the huns finances from last week’s piece, it strikes me as inexplicable to put tens of millions into a financially failing football club to win some off it back in the champions league. Champions league is only a partial return.

Best case, the huns qualify next season but investors would have plugged up to or over £60 million in losses over this season and the previous two.

It makes little sense from a business point of view. The huns are obviously an emotional investment for Douglas Park.

They’ll find the money to fill the losses this season and every season so long as the directors have deep enough pockets.

The people that should be really worried about Sevco’s finances should be Douglas Park’s immediate family. They should be fearful about the state of their inheritance.

Thanks for posting that impressively evocative graveside picture. Really powerful.

So are they wanting to abolish Catholic schools in England? Asking for a friend….

  9. If supporter A thinks a player is good and supporter B thinks the same player is poor, is one more likely to be correct than the other?

ie Is it logical to believe that A must be seeing something in the player`s game to rate said player and that B is simply not seeing that quality?

For the moment, I am ruling out confirmation bias.

That`s a good point e other countries. I have to say though that I have not experienced `outrage` re the existence of Catholic Schools. Obviously, truly bitter Huns and Orange order members are likely to feel like that but in my own experiences growing up in Glasgow and now in Arbroath, I cannot recall anyone advocating the abolishment of Catholic Schools.

  11. ….and I know some posters will be able to provide links showing some advocating the abolition but I am sure they are insignificant ( The advocates, not the posters !).

Thanks for posting that collection of John Thomson pictures. Poignant does not come close.

Aside of all his football ability and quality, he has to be one of the most handsome men ever to walk through Parkhead’s gates.

    Forever Young

  13. Sorry – been busy. Said earlier I’d say another wee bit on the B team game.

    Main things were:

Captain – Kerry McInroy – looks a good solid player – stood out from most of the others (I’m assuming some were missing – Murray, Moffat, Vata, etc., – due to international duties). Central midfield, kept the ball moving and had a few decent tackles

Ciaran Dickson – just signed from Sevco – played inside right-ish. Looked a bit leggy to be honest – flitted in and out of the game.

Young fella up front – didn’t get his name, but fairly sure it is Adam Brooks – looked rapid, good touch – liked him.

Sub at left wing-back – Jackson – also looked very fast and willing to go on the outside left overlap,

Look forward to following the B team – great to see even more Celtic games :-)

Reading the Johnny stuff, got me looking at the other Celts taken too early, tragic but very much of the time, Consumption, TB, flu, pnemonia, wars, accidents tragedy.

When people tall about vaccines, not until the 1950s did wide spread innoculatons make a difference.

I had not really considered the toll on Mr Maley, but the articles tell of a different man after the deaths of John and Peter Scarff.

    =======

Hot Smoked – it is a fairly prevalent thing in opur neck of the woods – sometimes disguised.

My neighbour when I lived in Chapelhall came out with the – ‘we-shouldn’t-have-children-in-separate-schools’ – statement when they were building the new primary schools on a shared-campus site (for the avoidance of doubt – that wording is well-worn code in North Lanarkshire’s more polite circles for ‘Shut The Catholic Schools’).

I said, very pleasantly – “I stongly agree with you Michael. We should send all of the Children in Chapelhall to St Aloysious – that has by far the best record”.

St Aloysious is largest of the two primary schools in Chapelhall, and had a really good reputation and record of good performance (my two weans attended, so I’m biased). It teaches good values and, like all RC schools, was open to – and much saught after by – many denominations and those of no faith – just a really good school ‘open to all’ – as they say.

Needless to say – my suggestion was met by spluttering embarassment, an incredulous look, and an early excuse from my neighbour to head back over the road to his own house. He never raised the subject again.

There is certainly a deep anti-Catholic undercurrent – sometimes not hidden like the example above – in this neck of the woods – I can’t speak for other regions.

  16. Hot Smoked agreed opinions are just that opinions.

To say “I’ve no problem trashing ex-Celtic players but not keen on trashing them whilst they are still playing for us”. Is utter nonsense.

Therefor no more comments from anyone on a current player. Dearie me.

    Hope you are well.

  17. and Peter Somers.

    Post-Celtic

He returned to Hamilton Accies in January 1910 and was to retire from the game a year later. He became a Director of the Accies. Tragically within just a few years he would take ill and have part of a leg amputated. It was a cruel blow from which he would never recover. On 27th November 1914, little more than five years after his departure from Parkhead, Peter Somers died in a Glasgow nursing home 10 days after an operation from gangrene. The cause of death was given as cardiac failure. He was only 36.

At the time of his death he was a Wine & Spirits Merchant in Hamilton and was married to Jane Mitchell. Jane only survived Peter Somers by less than 4 years. He had also been appointed as a director of Hamilton Accies. His son John Somers later played in Ireland for Dolphin in the 1920s.

He was a great player whom we should all remember and played a great part in an early landmark for the club.

  18. So The Desperados or Sevco

Are now charging the gullible £120 for their 3 match package

£39 per game, being taken separately, plus the £1 per game booking fee

  19. Jackiemac,

I commented on that pitch a couple of times.Disgraceful.Must have been a couple of tons of rubber poured onto it.

  20. RTB – For what my opinion is worth Tony Ralston has so far proved my opinion of him wrong…So far. I sincerely/obviously hope it continues.

    D :)

  21. Talking of pitches.Dear God,the state of the ,alleged, grass pitch in the Ivory Coast v Cameroon game has to be seen to be believed.Atrocious would be praising it.

    Funny though.

  22. Sevco are being bank rolled by wealthy individuals.

They need to win the league and get champions league money over the next few years to stabalises the finances and to make the shares worth anything too. Walking away now is more likely to lead to greater loss for the investors.

Problem is football is not like other business because of the variables at play, some things cannot be easily managed in a sporting environment.

Already the plan to sell players has not worked mostly because the players themselves dont fall into the high potential category which brings a premium price. Another season at them is not going to enhance their reputation its gonna eat into the premium (anyone over 23).

It’s like watching the first rangers gambling on access to champions league football all over again. Football’s governing body ought to get a grip on the financial doping that does on. Also if desmond and co wished to they could blow sevco out the water and we would be getting pelters from the media for our reckless behaviour.

  23. Saint there was also John Millsop who had just broken intae the side, he died of a burst appendix in 1952 and although players and officials from both sides of Glasgow‘s biggest teams attended his funeral on the morning of a game between both clubs, the minutes silence that day was broken by an FTP chant.

Surprised Parkheid wisnae closed for a couple of games in retribution.

For the sake of a quick response I haven’t checked this, but regards John Millsopp.

The attached Celtic Wiki link suggests the Glasgow Derby around the time of his death was a comparatively subdued affair.

However I seem to recall that McNee’s 1978 history tied this game and the reaction to the FTP episode into the beginnings of the Flag controversy.
