Natknow – fitness wise I would question whether they were fitter. I said at half time that very few teams could sustain the level of pressing and movement for 90 minutes and so it proved. I thought we looked physically stronger than them throughout the second half.

I am always puzzled that Euro teams look better at the basics even when they don’t seem to be better teams ultimately. There were one or two of them I would be happy to see in the Hoops.

You could be right mate – my initial impressions post match and post Guinness. :-))

  3. Guys.

An extremely hard watch if you were at Paradise.

A slightly less comfortable watch if you viewed it on the box.

Yeah, I remember the spin Scepovic’s da put on their 4th, as the Celtic chased a bigger win, in a tie held a winning position in.

We still greet at that night.

The game has changed in the last few years with the ubiquitous high press, technique is even more important than before.

Scottish players need to catch up fast our we’re chasing our tail for years

We have qualified for the EL

We have qualified above the pot 3 team.

    We were sh**e tonight.

All of the above are facts.

faithful through and through but still objective.

Are you attempting to suggest that avoiding a 3-0 defeat was a victory?

50,000 Celtic supporters didn’t turn up to see a cking disgrace, but that’s what they got.

Any Celtic supporter who is happy with that tonight needs shooting.

  8. Difficult watching that tonight. Happy we are in europa and hopefully we get kind draw. But we need to be honest some of that team will never be good enough at c/l level and we cant carry passangers at that level.

Ncham and brown should be playing in european games whenever fit, also like the look of the african kid / midfielder we bought in, they all look after the ball will, work hard and make their presence felt.

In january i would like to see us get a quality centre back in who has pace, power and organisational skills to partner sumonivic

On top of that i would like to see us bring in another midfielder who has the required skill set and perhaps a little more experience.

i would have no problem with ChrisG, ES, RT, SA and NB behind sold to the highest bidder either in january or in the summer to bring in finances and to make room in the squad. I expect md to be on his way out in the summer to so another striker is a must

That’s the point I tried to make in my first post after the game. That we qualified.

And that we were a disgrace.

I may have put it slightly stronger, and I’m pretty sure you know why.

We were all of that, and more. Our fans tonight expected us to be all of Celtic, and more.

    Pish. That’s. What. We. Were.

I really struggle to remember the last time I saw such a disappointing display.

Pile of pish, and it needs to be called out for what it was.

  11. The wider perspective. Pot 4 team achieved 3rd

    European Football post Christmas.

    Tonight. Poor.

I’ve lauded Armstrong in the past but I half expected to find beside my car 3 miles down London Road, hecwas that far off the pace. I’ve have subbed him by the half hour.

Ollie M was my MOTM and he only played a half!

Moussa has 2 modes. Devastating or disinterested. Tonight was mode B. No €20m plus bids anticipated on tonight’s showing.

And I have patience. And I’m not a philistine so I appreciate well constructed build up play from the back. But tonight we got a fair amount of fancying atound at the back before meekly surrendering possession back to them.

0-2 at HT would have been a fair refelection. I know that psychologically tonight was a challenge. Twist, stick, don’t go bust. We got lucky.

I don’t think this makes me spoiled. I think it makes me realistic and objective.

    HH jamesgang

  12. We need to defend as a defensive unit, as a team, stick or twist tonight, with players who are weaned on attacking, we knew what result we needed which didn’t help, if we had to win tonight, different mindset IMO

  14. we were not piss tonight our passing again was,we were beaten by a far better team thank god they couldnt do anything in our box.

we tried hard vbut not in the same class. imo

  15. Why should an underdog that is 3 up at half time go gung ho in the second half against a team that have the quality to pick them off and get themselves back in the game?

Celtic proved tonight that we could defend a lead against a superior opponent – and that is what they are BTW.

Our history is littered with hard luck stories. Remember Real Madrid, Partisan Belgrade and more recently Malmo?

Yeah, it wasn’t a typical Celtic performance but sometimes you have to win ugly. At least tonight BR’ s team showed they could do that. Not sure any of our recent managers teams could have managed it.

I, for one, will go to bed content in the knowledge that we can hold on to a lead against a good team.

  16. It’s all about the money, no matter, be it the club, the blog, it’s all about the money and feck anything else, sad that it has come to this, but it was always coming, we either live with it or not.

I really feel for my grandweans, I have had an easy ride in life, I fear for them.

I have made a few bob and lost a few more bob in my time on the planet, I have a home bought and paid for so at least have something to leave to the weans, they will get by, it’s their weans that I worry about.

    Hits my arse.

  17. Just back in our hotel room after the game. Result and performance was poor but overall we’re through to the last 32 of the EL which is what we aimed for at the start of the UCL campaign. KTF

My wee nephew got to meet the majority of the players after the game and that has made his trip over from Éire worthwhile. He loved every second of it.

It was absolutely brilliant to meet CorkCelt, AngelGabriel, OldTim and other CQN’ers in BV. We had a great chat and they really are top Bhoys.

  18. embramike says ” Yer team’s deid…Beat it!” on

Any players we sign in January – and bhoy do we need them after tonight’s abject performance – may be problematic for eligibility for the Europa League games as per UEFA regs …

    Article 43 Subsequent registration

43.01 For all matches from the start of the round of 32, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February 2018 (24.00CET) at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.

43.02 One player from the above quota of three who has been fielded in a UEFA club competition group stage match for another club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded:

    a. in the same competition for another club; or

    b. for another club that is currently in the same competition.

43.03 One or more players from the above quota of three who have been fielded only in the first, second or third qualifying round or play-offs of the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League for another club are entitled to be registered.

  19. Broony kept us in that game by himself in that 1st half.We were being overrun in the midfield.Yes,I am delighted we are through, but vast improvement needed for February. And that includes,Brendan.Between now and then he must assess who is not up to European level.Play Ntcham from now on.The boy is still learning, but has it all.Bring in Eboue.Any time he has played he has been good. What harm would a run in the team do him?.We cannot go on playing the same players who continually fail to deliver.Where was the effort we put in against Bayern tonight?.

A lot of hard thinking for BR to do.I am happy this CL campaign is over, did not really enjoy it.Lets get to January unbeaten, and get a well deserved rest.See if we get any quality additions.

    Night all.HAIL HAIL.

Only positive tonight was in seeing Eurochamps67 post earlier

    Thank God for that.

Without criticising any individual on tonight’s game

We were outplayed by Anderlectch tonight – they looked a far better team, their number 20 &32 had freedom of Celtic Park to control the game.

I will have my say on players tomorrow

    So

    Great to hear from Eurochamps67

    And

It’s the Europa league last 32 for the Bhoys in February :-)))

    Hail Hail & Nytol

  21. Just saw someone ask what different a quality centre back would make to overall team. Its simply he may try to organise the whole unit rather than hide, he may have to composure to pass the ball to his own playing rather than playing it to opponents all the bloody time and they stop the backline from bring stretched time and time again. They may have the overall effect of improving the team confidence and allow the other areas of the team to build the play etc…

Gettimg a better quality of centreback will not transform the team overall but, if we get the correct one in, it can go a long to reducing shelf inflicted mistake that are costly and it installs confidence

  22. First thing first.

Police Scotland and the match commander are four king sphincters. Arrived at London Road junction were cop station is to turn left onto London Road and onto Nuneaton street were I park at 6:53 when a traffic dick arrived and stopped traffic. 10 plus changes of lights and 17 mins later it became clear we were held up for GB walking to stadium. Ok I understand stopping traffic as they arrive at junction but 17 mins at 10 plus changes of lights with no reason for not allowing traffic through is just plain obstructive. Absolute C you next Tuesday’s. I should have been at ground for 7:10 at latest but waiting for that period then GB to pass and follow I just made it in for KO. Bucking Fastards.

First half we were as poor as I’ve seen us this season. Couldn’t string a pass together. Playing with fear once again.

Second half a lot better with a few decent passages of play and opportunities, losing to an unfortunate OG.

Anyway job done and post Xmas Euro footy.

MWD did I say the cops are spnicter licking baw bags.

In total agreement with that.Brendan has his work cut out.

  24. Oh. And add to that 2 traffic lick spittle sphincter lickers blocking traffic on Clyde gateway not allowing traffic North or South from London Road directions just sitting there not directing traffic through lights turning right heading towards Shawfield for M74. Only 4 or 5 cars getting through lights at a time with a 3 min wait for light changes when these 2 women’s genitals could easily have directed traffic through helping relieve congestion.

Police SCOTLAND are blow hard tubes.

  25. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    BIGCUPWINNERS

No,mate. I’m really effed off at that tonight.

  26. Tonight was as bad a performance as I have ever seen by Celtic at home in the Champions League, characterized by stunning ineptitude. There was no teamwork, no cohesion, no dynamism, no confidence, combined with poor passing, poor control, and precious little football intelligence. Did we see a single instance of sheer skill from any Celtic player tonight?

Some observations. 1. Watch the Anderlecht keeper in the tunnel pre game – he looks short, unathletic, overweight, and very nervous. We gave him nothing to do!

    2. Anderlecht won the toss, but elected to let us kick off. Within seconds, we had lost the ball, and they promptly started knocking it about, gaining confidence with every touch, and generally passing us off the park. This seems to happen with every European tie – we are incapable of taking the initiative.

    3. Midfield – within 10 minutes, it was obvious that Brown was being run ragged, trying to cover for Armstrong and McGregor. Why did we take so long to make a substitution? Armstrong was worse than a man down, completely at sea.

    4. Short corner – Boyata (whose passing is simply shocking) and Simunovitch in the box. We contrive to screw it up and Anderlecht break. Didn’t we do the same against Fenerbache at home?

We don’t seem to learn. When we cross a corner into the box, everybody goes for it, with no one looking for the second ball. Our production from corners is simply abysmal. Long gone are the days of Henryk, Sutton, Hartson and Balde striking fear into the opposition.

    5. There has been some delusion on the site vis-a-vis a Europa Cup run. God help us if we draw Arsenal, Atletico Madrid or Dortmund.

    6. What were our tactics tonight? Go for victory? Or defend and frustrate? I couldn’t tell, because we were so utterly inept.

    7. Lastly, I just finished watching the Bayern -PSG game. Superb entertainment with 4 really well worked goals and a feast of attacking football from 2 superb teams. Both light years ahead of us I know, but the least I expected tonight was Celtic purposefully attacking a team nearer our level. But no, we were abysmal. If we win the league and survive 4 qualifying rounds, it’s hard to see us winning a single Champions League Group Stage game without radical improvements to the team.

Over to you, Peter and Brendan.

    next

  27. Who is the match commander at Celtic Park. Because when I complained directly with 3 cops they said they act on match commanders guidance to obstruct traffic and supporters.

I hope he has a 28 day bought of sickness and skitters!

    MWD

  28. BlantyreTim

I was talking about football on the way home from the game.

Gordon64 – I agree with you it was a horrible performance and we need to trust Brendan to come up with the answers in January.

I am only saying we are through to the Europa League.

Anderlecht only needed 3 tonight because of Paris where we lost so many goals it flipped Anderlecht required score from 4 down to 3.

    Anyway good night.

  29. People taking about the bigger picture saying European football after Christmas maybe be correct but the bigger picture also says we are becoming a much easier team to beat at home in Champions League games. We get away with playing a certain style of football in Scotland but when it comes to Europe it’s unsuccessful, too much slack passing.

I posted at half time that I couldn’t get he head around waiting till half time to make the changes that were required, we all saw what was happening, yet we wait, we could have been dead and buried had they gotten their act together, they were all over us like a rash.

I accept Brendan saw what needed changed, but why wait, that I can’t fathom, it wasn’t working.

  32. Anderlecht had gd of -16 while we had gd of -12

If Anderlecht won 3 nil tonight they’d have a gd -12 and we’d have gd -15

2-0 respective gds would have been -14 to -14 and extra time I believe.

    1-0 respective gds were -15 and -13
